As explained by Professor Zrinzo, MR Guided Focused Ultrasound is considered a very safe form of treatment when compared to other surgical approaches. The treatment is incisionless, and is not associated with the risks that would normally be involved in making a cut in the scalp or drilling a hole in the skull bone.
However, there can be side effects to this treatment and patient selection is key to ensuring patients receive effective treatment with the lowest risk possible of experiencing permanent side effects. As Professor Zrinzo explains, long term data from research studies has shown that most side effects are transient, and will usually pass within a few weeks to months following treatment. These side effects are commonly caused by the initial swelling around the lesion which will subside gradually following treatment. Through research across the Globe, it is now understood that approximately 1 in 100 patients may experience a permanent side effect following MR Guided Focused Ultrasound.
