As explained by Professor Zrinzo, MR Guided Focused Ultrasound is a wonderful fusion of two technologies; MRI and ultrasound.
Essentially we use these two technologies to visualise with great detail the interior of the living human brain, and then we can use ultrasound to direct energy very precisely through the
skull and focus that energy at a particular point to raise the temperature and create a thermal lesion.
The fusion of these two technologies involves the use of MRI scans to visualise parts of the brain that are functioning abnormally and driving symptoms such as tremor. Then using that MR technology to focus, very precisely, ultrasound waves to the point and allowing us to ablate or damage that tissue, interrupting the brain circuit that's driving tremor.
The commonest indication for using these two technologies together is Essential Tremor, which is the commonest movement disorder. By using MR Guided focussed ultrasound, we can perform a surgical intervention but with an incisionless technique. This means we no longer need to make an incision in the scalp or drill a hole in the bone in order to facilitate this type of surgical procedure.
