It's about alignment of incentives. For situations in which incentives (profit) align with, or at minimum are neutral to the good of society, there isn't a huge problem with letting anyone compete for that market space. For situations in which incentives align AGAINST the good of society (health insurance keeps more wealth by denying care, private prisons make more money by ensuring more people are sentenced to prison for longer, pharma makes more money by developing treatments you have to take forever instead of cures you take once, etc...) - those institutions that have negatively aligned incentives should be government run with no profit motive, paid for by taxes and earning no profit by doing harm.

No deductibles, no copays, no caps or limits to treatment, no refusals of payment under an insurance policy, no bankruptcies. We pay a national insurance payment which runs to about 6% of income for the vast majority of people and for that we get full coverage under the National Health Service. Oh, and our conservatives fought bitterly against the introduction of this system and said it couldn’t work or be implemented. That was in 1947! “In 2010, a private-equity firm purchased six Catholic hospitals in Massachusetts, under the condition that the hospitals stay open and their workers remain employed for a five-year review period. Mere months after that period ended, the land where the hospitals stood was sold, forcing the facilities to pay rent. According to a recent report, the financial strain led to disinvestment in staffing, surgical equipment, elevator repairs, and even clean linens. Patients increasingly languished in emergency rooms, and mortality rates for common conditions rose. The firm realized an over-all profit of seven hundred and ninety million dollars. More than four hundred and fifty hospitals in the United States are now owned by private-equity firms. As Dhruv Khullar notes, “Health care is where the money is.” In the course of the past few years, corporations have learned to gamify the system in order to reap payments from the government, while simultaneously making necessary care more expensive for patients.” New Yorker essay, 12.12.2024

Killing is wrong! But for rhis horrific event would you be talking about the atrocious behavior of insurance companies who allow people with and without children to die everyday?

In 2023, UHC had a net income 23.14 bns. with roughly 2.2 mn people covered. A simple calculation tells us that UHC made about 10K on average from each of its insurers. This is really impressive, but the only way to do it is to deny claims as many as possible. Luigi is right, Insurance company are parasites in this society.

You laugh but it's saved a LOT of lives and it's an EXTREMELY popular program. As Obama told the Repubs when he came up with it, "If you have a better plan I will be happy to listen to it!!!!" No ONE has come up with a better plan to replace it. So you need to stifle!!!😂😂😂😂😂

*Health insurance in this country was OK and affordable until Obamacare! Obama said the average family was going to save $2,500 a year when in reality it COST us another $2,500-$3,000 a year! Insurance companies raised premiums on those of us who work to pay for health care for those who don't! Our deductibles also went up even though we chose lower benefit coverage to mitigate the dramatic rise in our premiums!*

How much are you paying is it an inexpensive insurance policy, have you read what it covers before you bought it. Ask the doctor what she charges for 5 minutes talking to a patient.

Gee, why not take the time to read your health insurance policy to find out what it covers? How come your laziness is someone else's fault?

Flat tax on all goods sold in the U.S.=universal healthcare. Then employers won’t be hammered on costs and be more competitive.
