Is the Kumaon Palm (Trachycarpus takil) sold to me as such truly a T. takil?

It took me a long time to find a true takil and your lucky to have a nursery close by to find one. The three most important characteristics to identify takils especially when their young is to look for elongated petioles and the fibres on the trunk are closely pressed to the trunk which is conical and lastly the trunk tends to grow obliquely.

Very cool that you got your Takil from Pungo Palms. That is where I got mine.

I don’t know man your specimen definitely looks closer to the real deal than any others I’ve seen, besides actual confirmed specimens (like the infamous guy in SLC with three pure takils that I’ve seen in person). Your specimen has many characteristics that match his exactly. I think you definitely could actually have a true takil! And if so, you got that for an AMAZING price and you will have possibly one of the only takils in that whole area! Im super excited to see how this specimen matures.

Got a palm labled Takil from Pungo palms in about 2010 . It was killed by 2013-2014 vortex. (probably didn't help that landscapers nearly defoliated it in september ). I suspect in eastern US climates, the sabal birmingham may be hardier, but it is so slow-growing as to be impractical .

Interesting, yeah it definitely may be, I have some seedlings currently so when I’m 80 I’ll let you know, LOL. Thanks for sharing!

most "landscape" crews are just cut and blow, totally lacking expertise in plant and soil health

Never trust a palm salesman, I had an argument with someone the other day at a local nursery over Dypsis Decaryi. Apparently this nursery thinks we're zone 10 down here. I mean we hit teens every few years so zone 10 is a no no.

Oh wow, that’s crazy, yeah you definitely have to be wary of that but the folks at Pungo Palms know what they’re talking about, they grow all their palms from seed from local palms and are very knowledge with lots of growing experience. Cheers!

Cool you got a rare one. I don't know how to tell them apart. Hopefully it's hardier but let it get big and tough before you test it out.

Thanks, will do, yeah I don’t want to tempt fate with it when young. I will keep you updated!

I think there are a lot of rumors and missconceptions about this palm, because it is so rare. I'm growing them from seeds in their third year now and I noticed, only a few people even online know them well. What I noticed is that they are very swamp AND drought tolerant. They seem to me much more drought tolerant (even in pots) than fortunei. They also don't mind sitting in water for quite a long time. Also when they are very young they look like most other Trachycarpus and the leaves can be very soft and lush green and only later become stiffer and stiffer with a lighter green to blueish look. You still often read that they are rather frost tender, at least more than fortunei. I can't confirm that either. They also often say that they are very very slow growing, but they variate a lot and are just as fast, if not faster like/than fortunei. Cheers!

Very interesting, thanks for sharing! Yes mine has grown quite fast, I always heard that they were slightly hardier than fortunei and mine breezed through this winter completely unprotected, they sure are hardy. Thanks for watching!
