Yes it is a real gibson. And im a true true gibson aficionado. Ive purchased guitars from trogly (he knows everything gibson) and im extremely invested in his channel and hes done many videos on the K.M. And its specific appointments. Along time ago when i started watching this channel i noticed it was a K.M. Long before you mentioned it. and a really good one at that. Keep that thing forever. Ive got a 78’ custom 👍

Pure legit 70's Les Paul. I own a '79 Goldtop, it shares all the major features - for years I didn't even realise the headstock was oversized! - the roughly cut binding, the volute, the maple neck, the metal pot cover, all of it. Its a heavy beast, it screams through a Marshall stack, and the top isn't showing any sign of greening....yet! Late 70's Les Pauls get a bad rep for no reason. Gibson let turkey's escape every year, but there are always good ones to be found, the 70's are no exception.

Got a 79 standard, only things I replaced on it since owning since 82 it are a set of grovers and the input jack. Best guitar I've ever owned, has the same large headstock, valute, 3 piece neck.

Yeah. Those 70's era Les Pauls were absolutely awful until the owner wants to sell it. Then they suddenly become the greatest guitars ever made ; ) I've had 2 norlin era Gibson's and they were my favorite Gibson's ever, except for the weight. There was just something about them that doesn't seem to be replicated in the new Gibson's. It was something about the overall feel and the way they vibrated. Of course mine were a '69 Les Paul bass and a '71 Les Paul Recording guitar. Unfortunately, I had to sell them because of some stupid financial decisions on my part.

I’ve wondered why the thick binding up by the neck. But, if you look very closely at a Les Paul with a “correct” thickness binding, it is the exact same wide thickness, but it appears thinner because the thick part is just covered with paint.

I have a 1983 Gibson Spirit, a rather rare and funky double cut model that's not easy to find, and people always ask me "is it real?" too. I know it is, and let me tell you, these obscure models from the 70's and 80's have something really special. Mine is awesome, super light and resonant, it's my main guitar despite having more "propoer" gibsons (a les paul and a 345)

I got a honeyburst tribute earlier this year. My only flip-flop I've had is whether I should've gone goldtop or not.. Logic being, the goldtop would hide the fact that it's a tribute and not a studio or even standard, much more than the straight wood finish - where the maple is not flamed, and clearly visible. But it's gorgeous anyway, in a grungy RocknRoll-esque kinda way. Non-guitarists tell me it looks old. And while I'm no fan of relique-ing myself, I choose to believe that that's the way I want it to look. In fact, the salesman tried to upsell me to a studio. He was like, "It's only $600 more for a shiney finish!" I looked him dead in the eye and said, "My point exactly!" It looks better, sounds better (the wood can breathe) and feels better (it has that satin feel instead of sticky gloss). ...And $600 looks better in my pocket, thank you very much! All in all, I'm very happy with my choice. It's just... I had never paid any attention to goldtops before. They looked like cheeeeaaap facsimiles of the real thing to me. I didn't realise they preceded the bursts! And in any case, the look has grown on me. I think the matte gold juxtaposed by the chrome hardware is just something special. Ideally, a pair of minihumbuckers, I think. That might be how I justify buying another, down the track!

Love your KM!. I had heard that Norlin changed the size of the Standard headstock to be the same size as the Custom, so they could use the same blanks on either model. At the time, the Custom was larger, since it is routed for binding. If they routed a Standard headstock, the would be very close to the tuning pegs. I have a '78 LP Pro Deluxe (stock P-90's, ebony fingerboard). Love it, though it ways a ton!

Why doesn't the dark burst "match" or line up properly behind the tailpiece (there's a visible seam)? Almost like its 2 separate guitar halves glued together that don't quite match. It's so obvious to me, yet I haven't seen anyone else mention this. Sounds fantastic, though.

The thick binding in the cutaway is to cover the maple cap that would show otherwise. Older gibsons like the 50s I believe left the binding the same thickness in there so you could see the maple cap in the cutaway. Some newer models like my 2015 classic have the thin binding in the cutaway.

I have a weird suspicion that during this exact era when they were moving the Epiphone line to the Matsumoku line... Well.. They started using 3 piece maple necks because of shipping from Japan... And Norlin is on the list of supplied companies... I have a feeling raw sources were coming from CNC in Japan and finished in USA... Japan made guitars are sick btw... So I think it might be both.. The thick binding in the cutaway was to hide the entirety of the maple cap. If you look on other, more historically correct bindings, they're much thinner, and you can see the maple and mahogany in the cutaway in the finish. I have a 71 Deluxe with the thicker binding also. Also a 3 pc 'hog neck, pancake body and I like the volute. And the bigger headstocks rule!

They did the binding like that to hide the thick top. The older and newer ones don’t try to hide that one spot

The 70s LPs are where it's at. The valute on the neck is what saves it from a higher chance of headstock breakage. I love the bigger headstock too.

Soon as I saw it I knew what it was. I have the same guitar in sunburst. Very nice guitar.

If it is a Chibson, which sort? Is it the Sow What or the Meat n Greet?

Look for a brass nut under the truss cover, pickups can be changed out,a knock off would have a hex truss.

Robert said it stays in tune extremely well. So there is that part ! And if he just plays it and doesn't sit on it daily, it will probably not spontaneously break.

Hi..Back in the day t tops were not very popular..like the volute..hence Dimarzios and others brands..i remember those km guitars as i think they cost more at the time than a regular lp thanks DH

Looks and sounds just like a guitar I bought in Japan in 1980. It was a no name brand copy of a Paul.

I was wondering...I bought a brand new Les Paul studio deluxe ii 50s neck from guitar center in 2013. Awsome guitar it plays and sounds great. Its definitely weights way more then a regular studio. I may eventually change the stock pots and maybe some bare knuckle pickups. With the coil tap and the boost knob its very versatile. 6 years and its still my main guitar. The thing is that a couple months after I bought it I couldn't get over the black nut on it. All the paper work checks out and it does not effect tuning, sound,or playability.. I never seen a les paul with a black nut from the factory...No answers on the internet and it stumps guitar techs... ...JUST WEIRD...

@@auntjenifer7774 it's all subjective right, I just find for me that it lacks that bit of warmth and is a little too harsh for a Les Paul is all. I play my Les Paul or Epiphone Les Paul for warmth and my Super strats for that punchy bite. However won't be playing anything anytime soon with my broken index finger lol
