to be sure: our fireworks needs to pass safety laws to be considered legal, however there's a few issues... 1st being it's Europe, you can cross multiple borders without running into customs and get the illegal imported quite easily 2nd is you can't control what the consumer does with it afterwards... (I mean if you strip 250 1gr 'poppers' and throw it all together you still get a quite devastating 250gr bomb)

The Dutch fireworks tradition at New Year's eve lasts only a few hours. Very few casualties. A far cry from 365 days in the USA with its gun laws.

Don't buy (unauthorised) foreign fireworks. Read, understand and follow the instructions, wear safety glasses (also as a spectator) and all will be fine. Most "accidents", as shown in the video, come from (illegal) fireworks that are not handled properly. (for instance sticking fireworks to cans of gasoline) The proper handling of fireworks is actually taught by parents to their children just before or around the early teenage years, starting with small children's fireworks, making them aware of the heat and possible dangers, proper handling and right and wrong ways to light actual fireworks. Unfortunately this healthy practice seems to have skipped a generation or two. And so called "bans on fireworks" only contribute to more illegal fireworks without actual knowledge on how to properly handled those, resulting in even more/serious accidents. Teaching, preparation and experience is the way. Awareness is king. Prepare your children and don't look away!

i love fireworks, spent 1000euros each year. dont bann it!! and just leave it to the people, not the proffesionels, than the fun is gone, and why must it always be safe and without risk? you have to live though. don´t take our last tradition, because all the other one´s are stolen allready

Here in Belgium we have firework 'shows'. Yes you have to go outside for that but it has something in my opinion. The pro's know how to be responsible with the fireworks. I know the Netherlands doesnt want that. I got forced into it because I moved countries and I prefer professionals do it.

Consumer fireworks are as popular in Belgium as in the NlLs and thousands if not milions of Dutch buy their fireworks in shops just across the border in Belgian shops.

You're right and it's because in Belgium heavy firework is allowed. When you bring it to The Netherlands and you get caught by the police you get a big fine for the possess of these firework. So don't think Belgium is much better in this case. Ofcourse in other things they are lovely and nice neighbours.

@@claudiadoomen I agree with that and many other Dutchies too. But in The Netherlands it's a long way to accomplish that. Despite all the horrible medical accidents and destroyings of public environment.

I truly hate 🎆!..because I'm scared to death for fireworks..I also think it's such a waste of money..What I mean is that the benefits (=amount of time enjoying fireworks) do not outweigh the costs..But this obviously my personal opinion.. This video doesn't make me proud to be Dutch...

The thing is, the major damage isn't caused by legal fireworks in the first place. I'm not really a fan of fireworks either, wouldn't even miss them but I think it's an insane idea to just ban legal fireworks because some people vandalize things with illegal fireworks.

@@devnull1013 What about mecical accidents? Also with legal firework. And we, the taxpayers, pay for the destroyings of the public environment. That also happens with legal fireworks. Excessive accidents happens every year more.
