Is new car battery fully charged ?

I just bought my second Interstate battery from Costco. This time, I actually brought my tester (similar to yours) right into Costco and tested my battery right on the shelf before purchasing. This also avoids the surely rare issue of having a dud battery. Great price...great warranty.

Yea. I have just charged my brand new battery. Well it got 6 AH. Total capacity is 56AH. So it had 50 AH . Only if you put a programmable PB charger it will do the job. Car alternator is not charger. It keeps battery in a good working condition. So new batteries are not fully charged. After factory production, batteries always loose load. So IF anyone has a good trickle charger should prior to installation charge the battery.

They used to say that when you buy a new battery, you should charge before use. This kind of makes sense because lead acid batteries need a 'forming charge' in order to bring them to life. I guess this allows them a longer shelf life before they are charged. I've just come home with a new battery for my van. I put it on charge before fitting, and indeed, it was hungry.

bigozo1981 even if its not fully charged,if it starts your car, go for a drive, the alternator should charge the battery.

In 50 years of battery buying I've never found one to be fully charged. The last one took all day to charge. I always ask just to hear the BS answer. They don't have a clue if it's charged or even works at all but the answer is always "yes."

The stickers that are put on the battery are completely bogus. Stick with me... I just bought an interstate battery at an Interstate battery dealer here in Memphis that supplies interstate batteries to all the dealers here in town, so I know they have good turn over and pretty fresh batteries. When I bought the battery at this location, that was the day they stuck that round date sticker on the battery. What is happening is, when your local dealer that is supplying this Costco with these Interstate batteries, when they make that delivery, that is the day they put those stickers on the battery or someone at Costco has been instructed to put the sticker on the battery when it is sold. They are hoping Costco sells them before they get to old. You always want a fresh battery...... But with all that said, if you really want to know the born on date is, look on the rim or somewhere on the battery, you will see a bunch of number and or letters that are burned/melted into the plastic of the battery. With those #'s or letter you can call Interstate and they will tell you exactly when and were it was manufactured. The dealer said they use that round sticker for the date of when the warranty starts/sold.

I read somewhere the self discharge rate of car batteries is actually overblown. It's the parasitic discharge that tends to cause more problems. So a disconnected battery doesn't lose nearly as much charge as any battery connected to even the older cars with very little electronics. It's pretty good idea to test the battery when you get it. Defective battery is fairly common. Costco seems like a good place to buy car battery but it is too bad they no longer install it for you after a supposed incident in one of the warehouse in California.

I had to jump my costco battery when i first got it. But none the less I didnt complain for the 80 dollar price tag! i ended up getting a charger for 35 bucks when i replaced the next cars battery. charged it for 20 min, then it fired right up. Thank you so much for your videos. Costco's batteries are the way to go. If you have any warranty issues, they don't even ask, you just can go and get a new one in 42 months. Its kinda good so you don't need to convince advanced auto or the dealer that your battery is dead. Ps. looks like you got a new costco membership based on all the costco videos. Going to check out their wiper blades this weekend, I wonder if that is next on the list =D

How long did you charge the battery for, I had the same experience buying a new battery from Costco and my car wouldn't start. I used jumper cables to start the car, drove it on the highway for 20 mins, got back home turned off the car and tried to turn it in again but it wouldn't come on

It may have lost some charge from sitting but when you put it in your wife’s truck it should get back to 100% fairly quick. If your wife’s trucks alternator is functioning properly of course. Better take the alternator out and make sure it’s working at 100%.

You did exactly what you should do, Most batteries off the parts store shelf are from 80 to 90 percent charged. I keep a maintainer that I cycle through my shelf batteries on a regular basis. However I'm a repair shop and only keep 5 popular batteries. Most parts stores here that I get batteries from that I don't stock do not keep them charged or fresh. I always check, test and charge them before installing. You can hurt an alternator letting it be the battery charger.

Bought an Interstate from Costco today. I grabbed the one with the most recent date on the sticker, others were 2 months older. Took it home and put it on the charger. Charger indicated that it was below 80% and it took awhile to reach a full charge. So I popped off the electrolyte fill caps to see if something there might explain the issue. Only 2 of 6 cells were filled to the bottom of the tubes. The others had fluid that covered the cells but were not close to the fill tube level. Is this a problem? Who fills these things, is it done onsite at Costco or before shipment at the manufacturer?

Great info on this. I am in the process of buying things/tools for diy car maintenance/repair. I thought I saw you chose the after charge on the tester? would that make any huge difference? I believe the battery was not charged after purchase, just sitting on the shelf.

Yea but that’s a very fresh very high quality battery, I just bought an everstart plus 3 months old so I’m not trusting it’s fully charged, popped it on my imax b6 we’ll see how many mah it takes to top it off.

My brother found that some are actually missed completely when they give it the initial spark. If you buy one and it is dead, look up how to provide the initial jolt to get it chargeable. My brother knows but he didn’t share it with me!!😂
