Is Nigeria $6 Billion Hydropower Project a Scam?

The Mambilla Hydropower Project, situated in Taraba State, Nigeria, represents an ambitious endeavor set to significantly transform the nation's energy landscape upon completion. With a planned capacity of 3,050 MW, it is poised to emerge as the largest power plant within Nigeria and rank among the most substantial hydroelectric projects across the African continent.
The project's scope encompasses the construction of four dams spanning the Donga River, alongside two subterranean power stations. Notably, the primary Mambilla Dam will facilitate the redirection of water through an extensive network of tunnels spanning 33 km, ultimately reaching the power stations situated 1,000 meters below the plateau's surface.
Anticipated to yield a substantial output of 5,400 GWh of electricity annually, the project holds immense promise for bolstering Nigeria's energy infrastructure and meeting its burgeoning power demands.
Despite its monumental potential, the Mambilla Hydropower Project has encountered prolonged planning phases spanning over four decades since the inception of the first feasibility study in 1972.
However, significant progress was made in 2017 when the Federal Executive Council awarded the construction contract to a consortium comprising Chinese entities such as Gezhouba Group, Sinohydro, and CGCOC Group.
Nevertheless, the project faced setbacks, notably in the form of construction delays attributed to landslides and legal disputes, which temporarily impeded progress. Fortunately, these obstacles were resolved by February 2020, paving the way for the project's anticipated commencement.
