Is Nikon hurting sales by doing this?

Is Nikon killing themselves by allowing this? Is Nikon shooting themselves in the foot by allowing 3rd party lens makers to make lenses for Z mount? Opening up the Z mount for all?
How good are some of these lenses by Viltrox, Sirui, Tamron and such?

I wish Nikon would equip their En-El15 batteries with type-c port, just like SmallRig. Especally after they put the charger off the box

For all the reasons mentioned…I still have a Sigma 70-200 F that works well with my F and Z mounts, but will never replace a Nikon, but works great for my purposes. I agree with the idea that if it gets bad, it no hair off my tail to pay for a replacement, but if I was on a job it’d be a problem. The rising tide lifts all boats.

Always carry a back up. If my 70-200 goes down I have an 85mm in the bag. Sure it takes some extra steps to get the right Framing but I can deal with it. Yes, make more lenses for Z mount. More options the better.

Z glass by NIKON is always fantastic but having cheaper options are good to get peeps into the NIKON System and once you are invested in the System you really want to have some NIKKOR GLASS , I have 28mm 40 mm and 24-70 F4 S and love all of them , as well as many F Mount lenses for my FTZ ........also will be getting VILTROX 20mm for Z .......Just a great system and yes thank you NIKON for third party lenses .....

Great video, and you did amazing job with lighting it up. I think the next steps for these Chinese Lens company is that they will also make their own camera body eventually. For example, Sigma eventually made the Sigma FP after many years of making lenses. It is true that the FP is not the best camera out there, but for a company that focus primarily in making lenses, they did an great job with that camera, it offers 12-bit CinemaDNG RAW + 4K up to 30fps in compact body in Full frame, and I still see some KZbinrs here and there talking very positive about how good the camera is for making video content creation.

Thanks Luiz. Appreciate you appreciating my lighting setup. Very easy 2 light setup. One main and a color kicker in the back for some added spice. I played with that Sigma body at one of the trade shows. Interesting camera. I'm waiting for Nikon to show up with a real Red Hybrid.

Nikon needs to let the third party release all their lineup of lenses. Viltrox, Tamron, Sigma, Rokinon/Samyang, Meike, Sirui, Voigtlander and other should and most be encouraged to release all their E- mount lenses in the Z mount. On the long run it will let consumer get into the Z mount. Later when RED moves from RF to Z mount then there are the good willing of lens manufacturers who trust Nikon.

Agreed. The lenses 3rd party make are becoming better and better. I am pleasantly surprised. Sure the coating. focus motors. smoothness of focus , corner sharpness. CA chromatic aberration is going to probably be better with the Nikon lenses. hence the price you pay but for some the Viltrox and Suriu stuff is just fine.

I own both 1st and 3rd party lenses. I get the 1st party for the optical performance and quality promise, but I get 3rd party, quite a few of them in fact, for the character and the wider apertures they offer. I am yet to own a Viltrox lens, but I have quite a few TTArtisan,and 7Artisans lenses in addition to some Sigma and Tamron glass, and I really love their love their rendering, even with their imperfections, which to me are part of the charm and character. Moreover, a lot of these companies make glass with focal lengths and bright apertures that are not available from Nikon as you pointed out, and about 90% of my 3rd party glass falls under these categories. The build quality is usually very good as well, so what's not to like? I vote with my wallet to support their R&D efforts, especially that there is nothing that breaks the bank usually and the value for money is excellent.

hello Vahagraphy, Not sure if Nikon is shooting itself in the foot, But I know when I tried no bought a Sigma lens that was £500 less than the nearest Nikon lens. After reading so many glowing reports of this amazing? I was so disappointed whit it I gave it way for free and then bought the Nikon version. I know that that was in the F mount and there are some amazing third party lenses from Ziess, but they tended to be more expensive than the Nikon lenses. So my point is that I will alway look at OEM lenses for my kit. (Nikon and Hasselblad) I know it cost me more but they just work. One more thing I must add is the Nikon Z glass is next level for image qualitity. Good to see you back.

Nikon Z is on another level. correct. there are many Z lenses I love and cannot be touched. but man, these pro DX viltrox lenses are great. this Sirui is top notch. You have the best top lenses, Nikon and Hassi so your eye is trained for the best of the best.

I would really like to see the old Tamron SP line in native Z-mount. Fine rendering, solidly built, primes with VR so we can have that for full frame and include the crop sensor cameras that lack IBIS. Tokina has always had some great offerings that here often overlooked as well. Sigma can step off. Some of the worst service after the sale of any mainstay brand, they rank down there with Sony.

I remember that famous Tokina wide zoom that everyone had for F mount. good lens. I've had good luck with Tamron. Never really got into Sigma Art because I had the Nikon F counterpart.

I have been a Nikon shooter for years and the reason that i stay on the brand is because of the third party glass: Laowa, Tamron, Viltrox, all of them are making amazing products, i have some Nikon z lenses too, more options more better. Viltrox 85mm 1,8: Amazing, Laowa 90mm macro: amazing, Laowa 15mm f2, amazing and there isn´t nothing like it on the nikon z line.

Sony has been doing that for a long time now and they're still at the top. I don't think Nikon would be affected at all for opening up to 3rd-parties. Canon, on the other hand, have been tumbling down since closing their mount off from 3rd parties until recently

Absolutely not!!! Nikon has realized what Sony already knew and that is if you expand your lens selection, you expand your brand. People want and need cheaper lens selections because it drives them to your brand. Also third party can develop lenses that Nikon doesn’t have or have no interest in developing. Nikon has copied Tamron with the 28-75mm and the 70-180. Longevity is no longer a problem. People marry their lenses and date their camera bodies.

Exactly. Some might argue it kinda of hurts lens sales but it actually helps sales. Example of this, One gets into photography. buys that 85 in this video. gets more serious into photography. starts charging for work, then eventually buys the Nikon 1.2 beast.

They accepted few 50mm, 85 mm AF lenses from Viltrox, Youngnuo, 7Artisans which is straight conflict with the current line. And 135mm Viltrox is on the way

I used to read about Nikon hoping to get to 1.7 lenses sold per camera. I don't think they will ever get to that. So many people have 3 or 4 bodies, and also with these cheaper non Nikon lenses, they will ever get there.

I think many start off 3rd party and migrate to the Nikon lenses but given the rate, price and quality of these latest lenses and also the state of the economy things have changed. People are finding work arounds for many solutions.
