Welcome to another video on our soft series exploring games that were total disasters at launch that may have become better (or not). Today's episode is about No Man's Sky, a game I actually kinda liked at launch, but obviously wasn't a major hit all around, especially considering the extreme hype train that was trailing behind it.

They put it for 50% before every one of their biggest major updates that really change the game. I had to put all those qualifiers in because they still update this game so often that there are different levels from visual upgrades to new mechanics with an expedition that shows off the new mechanics and are like a hidden tutorial in a way.

Watch the internet historian's video on this for a better explanation of the whole story. Austin hit the high points but missed some key context apparent in his conclusion. Also, I've never heard of feature creep. We've always referred to it as scope creep. Which happens a lot in the field. I guess it may be a regional idiom. I thought it was interesting to hear it though.

10:53 I too enjoyed No Man's Sky on release for exact same reasons. I never watch trailers, E3, or the like for exactly this reason. Lots of stuff gets over-hyped and over-promised on (and sometimes trailers contain major spoilers). When I picked up No Man's Sky, all I knew was it was supposed to be a space exploration game with procedurally generated planets. That's what I got and I was happy.

No man's sky is always going to be an example of a game that should have launched in early access instead of claiming it was ready to launch when it wasn't. Like the success story of what it did after the failed launch was to basically follow the current early access model of big updates that being the game closer to feature complete.

The answer is: Yeah, pretty much. I have almost 1400 hours total over 4 years. Its easily my favorite game, and whenever I do get bored with it there happens to be an update or expedition thats dropped and the enthusiasm comes roaring right back. Its super chill and weird in a good way. Its like Salvador Dali and Roger Dean dropped acid and made a video game. There is a ton to do and no real pressure to do anything. Its 100% on what you feel like doing at the time. There's several definitions of "success" for this game and dozens of ways to achieve it. Its got the best building mini-game of any game I have ever played. And its huge. 18,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets in 265 galaxies that are fully explorable. If its on sale, I say give it a shot. Watch some tutorial vids so you aren't frustrated in the early game because there is a LOT to learn and know, and the game only shows you the very basics. Check out Jason Plays and Survival Bob on KZbin, their beginner guides are top notch.

Stopped playing it for a few years then picked it up again, and was amazed by how far it had come--and by the fact that fun new updates just. Kept. Dropping! I can't do anything but laud the team's dedication to providing consistent new content for the game for years and years; and for free, too, instead of doing the modern thing of monetizing every tiny thing! Hellogames has proven themselves as genuinely good folks, at least in my eyes. (Also, about the rough launch, wasn't there a fire or something that basically destroyed the entire game and forced them to remake it rapidly? Or am I remembering wrong? A shame google is too shite to look that kind of info up now, wish I could be sure.)

Multiplayer is still a bit iffy. Can't really collab with someone to get the 'missions' done, as if you do one part and someone does the other part then you'll have to restart the part they did. ie the base stuff. I built a building, but my brother put the system in place, so I had to build one. But I had to move out of the place I'd made because they were too close together and go fairly far away. So we just basically started playing in tandem instead of together.

I am very happy that Hello Games fixed the game and that it has its loyal fanbase. Unfortunately, it didn't work in my case. I've had a few tries (last about half a year ago) and found it to be very repetitive. In addition, there is no real MMO, which we were promised from the beginning. I had many of the same issues and found by moving it to a SSD that the loading lag pretty much disappeared. Hope that helps

I liked NMS at launch my issue is they should have been truthful and called it a early access game that still needed a ton of planned features added to it. I would love it if they improved the flight model or at least had a option for these who want a less automated arcadey flight model.

I know there are elements of the game that I will enjoy, but I also know that the main gameplay loop is not for me, so I don't know...

I think the biggest problem is that they released it at full price when it was nothing more than a tech demo at initial release. If they sold it for like $25 with the offer of paid dlc later on, nobody would have been upset. But in the end, it worked out great.

I was/am an OG NMS player. In 2023 it is NOT the dumpsterfire it was at launch. NMS is not a game for CoD Bros. It is for a chill crowd.

Laughed HARD at the dig at Elite! Hello Games shut the hell up and got to work. It brought the I.P. around. Frontier Dev. is great with the first half of that and seem to forgo the second. And by Frontier I'm referring to those at the upper echelons. The boots on the ground staff is stuck doing what they are allowed to do.

I have to say that they are the only game or gaming company, to my knowledge, that has taken the time to bring their promise to the real world. How many E3s have come and gone with nothing but lies and promises about the ultimate games that flopped after 6 months or were complete hot garbage compared to the promises we paid 60 dollars for. Remember Anthem? And NMS brought it back from the brink with out hammering ppl with paid dlc. Though, It is big and has so many features that it is a little daunting id have to say but otherwise its fun progressing to new and better things. ps Austin i have an old 1070 and i have no issues running, but i also have the game on a solid state, so if your running it on a hard drive that may be the rendering problem. I know my cpu could keep a family warm in the winter though when i play. pps Its good to have you back!

Yussssssss No Man's Sky. Edit: After watching the video fully now, I am a bit surprised. I felt him going as far as to as to say "ehhhhhhhhhhh" instead of "yeah it's good" after mountains of free updates is kind of weird, especially after he liked it at launch. With more and more added, I just find more and more stuff to like about this game. And yeah, I fell 60 dollars is a little much considering when it was released, but like he even said it constantly gets updates. Considering how far along it is, I feel the price tag is more justified now considering the amount of content. But either way I guess, to each their own. Just kind of surprised. By the way, at the time of release of this video, the game is on sale for half off on steam, and 30 dollars is a WAY better price than 60.

They kept going and keep going! It’s so awesome to see a passionate game, especially nowadays when so many games are released like No Man’s Sky and aren’t EVER polished afterwards or just dropped after very few updates. It’s what made me get the game 3 years ago when it was on sale and although I haven’t played it- it was money well spent, I’m glad I supported a company like them.

@@Arbbal I got what I wanted. I liked it on release, much like Austin said. Also, your comparison doesn't make sense. Brakes are necessary for the car to function. The game worked when it launched, it just didn't have the extra features. It would be much more like a salesman promising a back up camera, satellite radio, and a sunroof and not getting it. And now the car has all that plus a lot of extras that were installed at no extra charge. Sorry, unlike you, I'm not willing to fellate my own ego, posting the same reply on more than one comment in order to prove "I am right". I merely stated my own opinion, you were just straight up rude.

I played No Man's Sky around launch and I rather liked it. I even named a lot of life forms and whatnot. Though that got tedious quickly. I loved learning languages and meeting different sentient aliens and trying to uncover the mystery.
