They mention comic shop in Puyallup WA, I grew up there, where Todd Mcfarlane brother-in-law ran a shop called Spiders Web. They use to have signed Spiderman books for like $20 bucks when his series came out in the 90's. I was just a kid, and new to comics, and never bought any because I could still get 10+ different books for that same money back then. The store went outa business a long time ago..... funny to hear shout out on youtube that brings back so many memories

My first comic experience came from my mother bringing home 1960’s bagged comics from the grocery store! Wishing to move vintage comics? You have to be creative! People who own slabs, should try selling them at coin and stamp shows! If you own an expensive comic collection, perhaps sell them through an auction! I unloaded all of my comics years ago and replaced my favourite titles in omnibus form! Good luck!

You two are really interesting. Born in 79, my first comic exposure mid to late 80’s was free phantom’s in showbags. One day I bought a Spider-Man, Batman, Thor - had no idea about collecting. It wasn’t until 1990 we found an actual comic book shop that my brother and I had our minds blown. The books we got excited over: Xmen, Xforce, anything with mutants and powers. I never did the horror vintage thing - it’s really only this year I’ve seen lots of KZbinr’s who adore it because, they were 60-70’s kids. Makes such a difference what you grow up with that shapes your collecting. I love to read my comics and love to get full runs. I have a full run of wolverine - lots of Xmen - almost a full run of uncanny Xmen from 108-544. I collect to read and enjoy, if they go up in value it’s like ‘well that’s nice’ I don’t care really, I’m handing them down to my kids. Helps me not see them as an investment strategy but as hobby.

I know a guy who's been sitting on a raw Showcase #4 since the 90's. It's probably in the Very Fine range. He has no desire to sell it. He has the same attitude a lot of us collectors have: "If I sell it, I'll never find another copy".

How about the market crash of 1996-97 when marvel went bankrupt. I worked for galactic heroes in Dunedin Florida back in 1993 and the breaking of Batman's back had just come out. The lines on new comic day were around the block. My boss had a feeling there was going to be a crash and sold the store right before it happened. Wonderwater bought the store and closed it down a year later

As for the Spidey Super Stories , was always a fan and had the chance to buy a full run or raw @ 9.4 or above back in the early days of ebay . I got out bid by a guy from the USA as I had to factor in P&P costs to England , but think they went for a total of $500 which was no small potatoes 25 years ago given the exchange rate . Never seen a collection come anywhere close to that since.

Great stuff. The two of you consistently provide the best and most balanced view of comic collecting on YTube. One observation as to whether someone should "invest" in comics.... Some fans have convinced themselves that comics can be an investment - and that's fine, but some of these folks are non-homeowners, with no retirement savings, who carry credit card balances, who don't have a 6-month emergency fund, etc. Assuming some comics really are valid investments (and that's open for debate) the only way anyone should frame comic purchases as investments is to first have their house of cards in order. Meaning, they shouldn't have a lot of debt, they should have excess monthly income and a rainy day fund (paying 4%) etc. Buying comics with credit cards and carrying a balance isn't good financial planning, but if it's done on a small scale (e.g., from dollar bins) is no worse than using credit cards and carrying balances for Starbucks - at least comics are an entertainment and a hobby, like movies, or attending sporting events. But anyone who thinks that they're "investing" by buying hundreds or thousands of dollars of comics at 25% credit card rates is making very bad financial choices.

This question is for anyone that has the time to give your two cents: what is a good method for organizing your collection? I’m new to collecting but I’m quickly realizing that keeping track of what I have is going to become impossible if I don’t start some kind of spreadsheet. I’ve seen apps for comic collections but I’m also collecting magazines. Anyway just putting this question out there hoping to hear from someone who has been through this newbie problem.

As someone who has restrained from submitting to CGC for a bit of time now, for all the reasons, I'm starting to really lean more CBCS. I feel they are a better product with more traditionally consistent grading. Do you see a moment when their slabs finally start demanding the same market value as CGC?

I bought a HoS 92 in a CGC 9.2 in May of 2023 off of eBay. I paid (in total, w/state tax) $9,200. I am NOT rich and that book took everything I had, but for me- the biggest Wrightson fan on earth- I HAD to have THAT BOOK in a 9.2, because NM- is my sweet spot and that was my ULTIMATE BOOK TO HAVE. Within months that book, that I "bought" for $8,500, was selling for $6,500. If I sold that book at auction today I'd be LUCKY (after eBay/Heritage/Comic Link/etc. fees) to get 6 grand in my pocket, meaning that within MONTHS what I thought was an unimpeachable classic that would at LEAST not go DOWN has me out 1/3rd of my buy-in, and who knows how much more it'll go down from here. I figured that at the LEAST it would retain its value but nope: even the mother of all Bronze Age books tanked on me- and for reasons I may never know.

I haven't paid attention to to prices for that book, but it's relatively easy to find until you get into the nosebleed grades. I just buy what I like with no expectation of getting my money back. It is very difficult to break even in this hobby if you target books on your want list. The guys who make money on books are the ones who throw lowball bids at many, many books and see which ones stick.

You can never go wrong with buying a book at cover price. I would never spend $100 on a book in the hopes it goes up to $200 unless I knew for sure there was a movie or TV show involved. But with modern books like Absolute Batman or Ultimate Spiderman, you can buy these books at cover price! A great example is Ultimate Wolverine which comes out in January, you have a chance to buy a book you knonw will be worth 8-10 times what you paid for! Books like that is what you should be buying.

By cgc and it got same grade by pgx cbcs and egs it should be value same as cgc., Cgc said people buy books not cases and company name logo on case make value of books it’s books them selfs make books valuable as emgo316 says options are good there is no right and wrong go with company you like feel comfortable with grade books I had no problem using pgx, cgc I refuse to use cgc high prices take to long months to year get books back , cbcs have no experience with them people have options send books get graded there is no right and wrong those books should be valued same regardless who graded them based on condition and grade nothing else, Ever since cgc had there problems cgc has been little generous with grading I saw cgc grading book that got 9.8 you can clearly see big bent on corner that bent will bring it down less 9.8 cgc grade that book 9.8 on KZbin

I stopped reading comics when they went up to 15 cents - too expensive. I had a box of comics that my brother and I and our friends literally read the covers off. I find it very amusing that people see these as investments.

Because they are investments. Anyone saying differently doesn't know comic books. You absolutely can make money.

Those super pacs are listed by number to show the contents. It’s not a mystery. Kind of silly to open a pack that’s been sealed for over 50 years….

The pac’s have never been worth as much as the individual books. If you sell comics you’ll make more money opening them, and pressing them. I have a pak even older than the one he opened, it has 12 centers. I haven’t opened it but I’m pretty sure the individual books are worth more than the pak is.

It would be the time if in fact prices were dropping but in fact they are not on EBay. They are in fact overpriced and mostly not selling. People have to check a price guide before bidding or buying as the unscrupulous sellers are out in force on EBay. One seller is selling facsimile covers. Those are covers with no book in between, just a cover I was duped by the word facsimile. Another seller calls himself Variant in his seller name, I thought I was buying a variant, it wasn’t . Then there is the guy selling facsimile digital copies. Bought 5 of those for a loss of 10 bucks. What is a facsimile digital copy? Yet another seller was selling something but I could not understand what.

Comic books are in a permanent downturn. The young folk nowadays is into manga and sports cards, not comic books.

@@stephanholder6240 In every collectables market, some items remain desirable even as the general market continues to slide. This even happens with brown furniture, china, etc. Even so, it IS surprising how much the value of AF 15 has dropped recently.
