Oman is a country that you rarely see on the news. This is interesting given that Oman is located in one of the most important geopolitical hotspots: the Strait of Hormuz. One third of the world’s oil travels past the Oman coast. On the other hand, Oman is perhaps the most tolerant country in the region. Despite being an absolute monarchy, apostasy is legal in Oman and around one third of the workforce is female, which is a high number compared to the regional standard.
Diplomacy-wise, Oman has managed to maintain friendly ties with both Iran and Saudi Arabia. They have been friends with Israel, The United States and all the arab nations and they have avoided any kind of significant conflict for decades. All of this was thanks to Sultan Qaboos, who died at the beginning of 2020. So now the question is: what challenges does his successor face? What is going on in Oman today? In this VisualPolitik video, we tell you all about it.

Just to correct some mistakes in 2:55 it’s called the Arabian Peninsula not the Saudi Peninsula, Second Sultan Haitham bin Tarik isn’t the Son of Sultan Qaboos, he’s his cousin. Bin means “son of” And finally as an Arab is the 2nd favorite country after UAE. I’d say Oman and Omanis are the friendliest in the region they’re very humble and friendly and tolerant.

The puzzles look on her face was worth a million. Needless to say I was sent to immigration investigation room to look further in my case. All went well though in the end,

Oman isn’t poorer because it started its oil development later - it is poorer because it has far less oil, and the oil is thicker, and the reservoir rocks less permeable, so you have to drill more wells to get it out.

I agree. If they wanted to catch up with their rich neighbors they should start thinking about reforms. To lure foreign investors. Did you know how difficult for a foreign businessman to establish a business in Oman? If reforms were implemented for sure Oman will surpass its neighbors. Remember, Oman is vast compared to UAE. There are a lot of tourist areas and resources that are available in Oman.

Agree with all Rishad says. An American post-9/11 worker in Abu Dhabi 5 years, I went to Oman regularly and camped in the desert, sometimes alone, just outside the UAE border. That’s something I’m afraid to do in most places in the US. But make no mistake, the safety is partly the result of a well-funded security apparatus in both UAE and Oman.

Many doesn't mean most, Many means it happens far too much. Let me put it this way. Less than 1% of the US population is an active member of the US military. Also, much less than 50% of all the countries in the world are being occupied by an invading US military force. I will also mention that the odds of being killed by a US done strike are mathematically miniscule. Therefore, the USA is a nation of peace and the amount of warfare that it engages in is Not Much. You can also stop complaining about done strikes. There just isn't all that much of it. Is that how it works? Please tell me that's how it works. I want you to tell me that.

The sad part is that oman before wasnt that destroyed the whole problem started with the British. Oman 3 Centuries ago where a strong empire who dominated the indian ocean after kicking out the portuguese, We had the second strongest navy and made diplomatic ties with both brits and french. Unlike many other countries when empowered oman remained like how it used to be before, Sailing merchants. Naturally british didnt like a contender so they pulled every under handed tactics. Some of the thing that dealt hard hits on oman was, 1-Brits funding and starting an uprising against omanis in zanzibar (It was pure genocide against anyone with light skin). 2- Indians used to be a major investors in our expansion so after it fell at the hands of the brits we lost lots of valuable investors. 3- Invention of Metallic Ships changed everything. and many more but after around 200 years of persistence and the coming of WW1 and the economic crisis oman have got KO'ed (After all a merchant cant sell if everyone around them is broke)

18:00 I would like to state that the current sultan used to be a very active member in community and a humble man who also studied economics. The problem is that old man got hold of the country at the worst possible timing, Corona Virus just started, Oil Price's down, he also had to deal with all the corrupt ministers who came to be after the late sultan qaboos started getting ill. All of that coupled with international pressure especially from USA, Isreal, UAE, and SA trying to make oman normalize and the escalating issues in beloved yemen, and the fact that China trying to get their grip on every nation around the globe.

I am a Kuwaiti citizen, so I have no allegiance to any side, but, I am really disappointed in how facts are omitted here. This is a tactic Fox and other U.S. conglomerates use for propaganda, hence the level of rampant ignorance that is plaguing the U.S. (I know, I am a U.S. citizen). The British ship was targeted as a retaliatory measure again the seizure of their own vessel. The other comment in this video is about Iran being "antagonistic to the west". What exactly does that mean? This is purely because a Muslim country refuses to bow down to western powers and become subservient to them, which is more than I can say for the Gulf monarchs (disappointing!). Before I get hate comments for being biased for being Sheia, I am actually Sunni, and I couldn’t care less about religious denominations, especially when it comes to muslims (I believe we are all equal). The internet is full of westerners telling the world about what is and what isn’t in the middle east, and this needs to stop. This type of disinformation needs to be called out. I challenge VisualPolitic to respond to this, by either clarifying their position or conceding that they have made a mistake. Some how, I doubt they would, and to think I have been a fan of this channel. This episode changed all that for me. Having said all that, I am a fan of Oman and its people. I only hope more Gulf countries (my own included), would follow suit. PS. the clip of the girls giggling at 2:40 min, is the same stock footage used in this episode - kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6DXcqKkfsuBqq8. If you would like to report on the region, then go there, meet the locals, and get some original footage.

I agree with you 100% . It is easy to pick up biased information from the net these days without visiting a country or a region and spew inaccuracies to the gullible. The criteria for being a Muslim is singular ( Belief in a singular creator) and in accordance belief in his final messenger Muhammad, sal allahu alaihi wa sallam . There should be no other 'isms dividing the Ummah. It is noteworthy to state not a single Arab or Muslim majority state supported the letter condemning China's oppression of Muslims whilst the 22 signatories to the letter were: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK. That being bad enough, China bullied 37 Countries into singing a letter countering that condemnation. They are: Algeria, Angola, Bahrain, Belarus, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Comoros, Congo, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Gabon, Kuwait, Laos, Myanmar, Nigeria, North Korea, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Togo, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, Zimbabwe and the State Of Palestine. What a shameful state of affairs.

Firstly, the conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia has absolutely nothing to do with their religious differences. Secondly, Sunnis and Shias treat each other with respect, and there has never been a time in which they killed each other for religious differences. Thirdly, all Muslims do not desire a central authority for the religion (I honestly have no idea where you got that from.) Fourthly, Saudi Arabia obviously has not burned women for not wearing a niqab.

hey i lived there for over a decade just wanted to add: 1. until the arab spring protests spilled over oman was literally ranked in the top 5 safest countries on earth, for years! it's 1 of the most impressive accolades a country can have 2. don't be fooled by things like gdp 1st of all there is 0 tax on anything 2nd if you have a half decent job your employer will pay for everything accommodation bills my dad didnt have a crazy job he just had an mba and worked for a bank. a better statistic to quote would be what % of the gdp is takehome. 3rd the govt takes care of its people seeing a homeless is extremely rare farmers get help also 3. they should focus on tourism instead of high-tech unless it's part of a larger plan for higher education or something, fact is omanis live comfortably the incentive and desire for higher education is low especially due to pro-local policies such as foreigners can't run businesses there without an omani owner. there are so many schools there but when i was there from '95 to '06 i only knew of 1 college there a polytechnic personal opinions: omanis are both peaceful and friendly, they have a car culture nothing extreme like hagwala but guys like to drive brightly coloured sporty cars usually mustangs and they like to drive fast, it can be boring for kids there, sometimes kids end up driving also, traffic is not common and roads are quite empty at night, it's just a chill country so long as you're not drunk in public nobody will bother you. i miss oman a lot

Few comments on this analysis The Muslim brotherhood are not a terrorist organisation, I despise them because they use religion for political gain, not very different from US evangelicals who support the GOP, but this does not make them a terrorist organisation Qatar never supported any terrorist organisations the Saudis are not supporting, Qatar’s crime is just that they were not toeing the Saudi/UAE line Duqm is not an acronym, it’s a name of a port village on the Omani coast pronounced duq-em which is Arabic for wide or expansive.

Omanis are the most humble and friendliest among the Arabs in the region. I worked in Sohar from 2016 until March this year. It was a nice experience mixing and mingling with the locals, i have never experienced a situation wherein I was looked down upon as an expat except in few isolated cases. It is amazing to see how much progress this country has made under Baba Qaboos and I am sure this progress will continue under Sultan Haitham. I would definitely come back to Oman one day if I get a job but i am still unsure about the NOC rules. I hope they continue in this path of peace, brotherhood and tolerance. 🇮🇳🤝🇴🇲

Sounds like clever policy. What's more it came as a pleasant surprise to me that they are so low-profile and moderate as a nation! The only trouble is that in the event Iran becomes too strong will it not want to dominate the entire area? Or is it possible that they will leave Oman in peace because they are not Sunni? I know very few things about Yemen, Oman and the geopolitics of the area however I feel that Iran is expanding and becoming stronger. Will this not affect Oman at some stage in the future? Those who might have more knowledge or experience let me know your views on this matter so that by listening to different point of views it will be easier for me to draw a conclusion...
