I own both watches in this video and although I love the sub, the seamaster just feels like much higher quality to me. I prefer the display caseback, and the green ceramic dial is incredible because the color changes with different lighting conditions. The rubber strap on the omega also makes the watch one of the most comfortable watches I own and fits easily over a wetsuit/drysuit. In addition, I enjoy how casual it looks on the rubber because, even though the sub can also be worn very casually, the Rolex name makes other people very aware of the watch on your wrist and its value, which is not something I tend to enjoy advertising. And of course, as a diver with all green diving equipment that often dives in the kelp forests off the west coast of the U.S., the green color and "seaweed" name is very fitting for me. As a result, the omega is my new daily and the sub hasn't left the safe in months.

I must admit it has crossed my mind once or twice whether Rolex are playing “the harder to get” strategy simply because Omega are continually improving their watches and the only way Rolex can compete with that it is to limit their supply and thus perpetuate the myth that they must be better because they are more difficult to buy. I bought my first GMT in 2002 out of a shop window in Derby and apart from a slight difference in appearance and movement, I can’t say that the current GMT is that much better or justifies costing over three times as much as I paid in 2002.
@TheRunningManZ

The Seamaster was £1500 in about 2008/9. It’s now £5500. They are both as bad as each other.
@IrishScribbler
@IrishScribbler Жыл бұрын
@@TheRunningManZ I disagree. My first watch was a 1997 Seamaster and my first Rolex was the aforementioned GMT in 2002. The difference in materials in both watches, not to mention the advance in movement, is far more significant on the Omega than the Rolex. Granted, the GMT has been made with the 904l steel since 1985 and the power reserve may have increased, but apart from the slightly smaller lugs and larger hour markers and the ceramic bezel, there isn’t six and a half grand’s worth of improved spec on the Rolex compared to the 2002 model (which cost me £2,350). On the Seamaster however, I would agree that the price increase is more in line compared to the £1095 I paid 26 years ago. The 1997 model had a pretty basic ETA movement, the hour markers looked like stickers on the dial, and the dial itself very much resembled a blue circle with wavy lines on it; not to mention the aluminium bezel which was easy to scratch (and I did ☹️) Yet in virtually every aspect of the modern Seamaster Omega have upped their game to the point where I genuinely have to question whether I want the Submariner 126610LN more than the black Seamaster (the fact that the manager of my local AD who I’ve known since 2001 noted a silly fat grin on my face when I tried the Omega on recently doesn’t help. Especially when after buying from the store for nearly three decades the same manager says he’ll happily get me a Sub in once I’ve made my decision). The dial is stunning, the placement of the date at six is a genius move, and the movement is amazing. The only thing Omega need to do to make the Seamaster perfect is taper the bracelet and remove the AR coating on the outside.

I was obsessed with the SMP 300 back in 2020 & I bought one. It was my first luxury watch & I absolutely love it to this day. When I consciously spotted a new Rolex Submariner for the first time months later, I was completely underwhelmed. I thought my SMP was superior in every way 😂. Yes, I understand the Submariner is probably the most iconic watch ever made but you sure do pay for it. The black Sub is too vanilla of a watch & does nothing for me, but I’d love to own one with a green bezel (Cermit, Starbucks) which has added character. The SMP & Submariner stand toe to toe & are both great watches. Try them both on & buy the one you like more. The SMP is an insane value for what you get though, & I don’t believe the Sub has 3x better specs. The Sub will retain its value over time but that’s not why I got into watches. And if you intend to pass down your watch to younger generations, should the resale value matter? Just something to think about…

I was recently asked what I wanted for my 60th (which is a year away). After a lot of thought I decided I would take my first venture into getting a nice watch. After a lot of online research, watching many KZbin videos (ESPECIALLY YOURS - THANK YOU) and looking at many official websites. Oh, and also asking a few friends, I visited a few shops in Glasgow to see what caught my eye. Resultantly I asked for and was granted an Omega Speedster 38mm. ( I have. small wrist) - On advice from the shop we opted to buy it this year to beat any price increases possibly two if I dithered to Feb March next year. I was allowed to wear it on my birthday this this year 59th! and I have to say it has opened up a new hobby / interest for me. Your videos assisted here. What I would like to say is that from watching many videos there does seem to be a lot of favouritism / bias towards various brands. Is this better than that? What's the best investment? and so on. ( I think we sort of do that with everything don't we? From Cars to Golf Clubs - Restaurants and so on) - I suppose it's only human. I am glad to say that I will never sell this watch. it will be passed on and unless you are playing the game of selling to upgrade etc, my honest opinion is this. If you are buying a watch it's simple. It's absolutely and simply all about what "YOU" want and WHAT YOU think is nice. Not what other people try to drive you to think. Remember many of these people are driven by likes and views and ads which I understand. Either that or they are just nutters who like to annoy people! But the main reason for writing this ( my one and only ever time I will do this I think) is to say that for me I am absolutely delighted with the way things panned out. So go get that watch if you can and stand by your convictions. Defend them even no matter which one you go for. Make sure you take time to enjoy both it and the relationship and respect that you grows for your new watch. Hope you all have a fantastic ( and more importantly healthy) 2024... John Mac.

Recently picked up a pre-Bond SMP 300. Love it for its legibility and, frankly, for its lack of skeleton hands. Those are just too dainty for a dive watch - IMHO. He figured if it was good enough for them it was good enough for him. I received that as well. I bought a Cartier Santos because I thought it was historic and looked cool as well. However my favorite watch is a circa early 1990's Seiko 200m chronograph with black face & stainless with rubber bracelet. It was much cheaper than my other watches but it still keeps incredible time and although it has never been to 200 meter it has been to 50 meters in Belize. If you're like me, and hate the helium escape valve "wart", and prefer a more classic looking diver, it's the 300 all day long.

Currently the SMP has gone 38 weeks without being adjusted and is only 20 seconds off the atomic clock. The Rolex last went 28 weeks before being more than a minute off the actual time. Quite a feat for the SMP considering it has a lower beat rate.

It's a small case 37mm which I like because it doesn't feel like I'm wearing an iron brick on my wrist and it fits neatly under a shirt cuff. It is water resistant to 600m and although it doesn't claim the master chronometer rating its acutal performance is -1 second per day. The leather strap with deployant buckle may not be the best thing for actual diving but I don't do that anyway. And at ~$3000 on sale I bought it at about half list price.

16 years ago I went to buy a Breitling Aerospace and I figured a year later I would buy the co-pilot bracelet with the timer. When I saw it in person, I didn't like the unfinished look of the bezel or the size. I walked around in disappointment and wandered into another place. I saw some Omegas and tried them on. Bond? Too busy. Electric blue with sword hands? Wow! I'll take it. After wearing it for weeks, it felt better and better. The smooth sweep. The way it fit, the quality of the steel, the accuracy. Then I go on the internet and see comparisons to Rolex. I don't like the case, I don't like the tapered bracelet. I don't get why people wanted it. I read the Holbrook comparison where he gives the Rolex the win because he surmises the movement would fare better, but has no proof. On forums some Rolex owners and frankly a lot of others bash the SMP 300. "I wouldn't pay any more that $1500 for that watch." Over the years I watch them kick themselves in the ass as they realized what a watch they passed on. The WISH they could get them for $1500 and opine about how they shouldn't have passed on it. No service yet. On the timegrapher still runs like a tank and insanely accurate. Then I bought a PO. Then an NZL 32. Then a Sapphire sandwich. Then a 2254.50 and a DeVille Prestige. Happy with every one of them. I ended up doing some work for Rolex who dreads when I walk in with an Omega on. I got to handle a lot of Rolex pieces. Still doesn't do it for me. The Sky Dweller looks good but I think I have enough "dive style" watches (lots of Seikos) and I'm not paying prestige brand prices for a Rolex luxury watch. ALS, Blancpain, Breguet, VC, and more

I’m reading many of the comments and seeing most people selecting to Omega. I can certainly understand based purely on specs, price and availability. But these are stainless steel watches and there really isn’t intrinsic value to this… functionality wise, I would guess that most people aren’t wearing these watches for its dive or accuracy capabilities. Personally a watch’s value is about the emotion you get when you’re sitting there and looking at your wrist. And it certainly doesn’t hurt to know that if you wanna get out of that watch, you’re not gonna lose a ton of money. Because of that, given the choice, I will always choose a Rolex. I’m curious of all the folks here that selected the Omega, if given the choice at an AD, would you still select the Omega??? Financially it would make no sense to do so knowing the minute you step out with the sub, you can get 50% more than what you paid for it and then go buy the SMP. I think most comments that select the SMP is based on frustration with the lack of availability so for these folks, not having the option to get to Sub at an AD makes them choose an Omega? If your AD is calling you to let you know they have a Sub for you and it costs a few thousand more than a SMP, you would still choose the SMP???

I choose watches based on design, but they also have to be as accurate as possible for me. That's part of the kick. The thing I don't get with Rolex fans is, they say it's about history & emotion, but they always drag money into the conversation. People with money don't talk about money and don't need to worry about the finances. The picture I see is that a lot of people who buy Rolex, need that reassurance that they won't lose money and end up in negative equity. I've never heard an Omega owner go on about how much their watch has depreciated. They can obviously afford the hit. They probably make their money through intangible assets/investments.

Not everyone dreams of a Rolex. Nothing special about Rolex except their marketing so youre actually paying more just for the brand. I own Rolex and other brands but I don't even like Rolex that much. Omega all the way for innovation

@@Sizzle_Bear you must be right..that's why Rolex outsells Omega by 4-1 and people wait for years for their Rolex..yeah..you must be right 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Poor people? Whoever can spend more than 5000 euros/dollars/pounds on a single watch you consider them poor? Seriously? You must be in your teens to write a statement like that, especially here on this channel. Just in case you are a grown man, well buddy, honestly it doesn't seem by reading what you wrote.

@@LaurentiusTriarius I did the same too. Rolex watches are for the younger generation now they know nothing about watches. Zenith is on my list to buy

I wanted a black sub ever done I first got into watches 10 years ago. I finally had saved enough money to buy one but came to realise I had to either wait a very long time to get it from an AD or pay excessive amounts from the gray market. I tried on a omega speedmaster professional instead, and it was love at first sight. I bought it then and there. No wait times. No resale price. The sub is now just a watch that’s lost my interest. I’m am omega fan now and can’t wait to get a sea master!

I bought my Sub in 2012 with a 15 % discount on the grey market. Times have changed and times will change. I think there will be opportunities for everyone in the future.
