I might be “gifted” a Rolex one day by family…but I will NEVER set foot in another Rolex store. The whole availability concept is a deceptive business model. I’ve heard people discuss how they were told no watches, then receive a call hours later to come back to the store… allowing a retailer to decide who’s worthy enough to wear their watch is absolute BS! Mine wasn’t a call but an email the next day. I simply told them I already found the watch I was looking for and moved on….

Dave if you look for a gold Rolex you can get a new one now and very close to retail. It’s a lot faster process. Example a steel Daytona is almost $40k, but is 16k retail. A gold Daytona is like 32 k retail and you can find them new under $40k. So you end up paying 110-120% instead of 300%

Agreed and I'll add another big reason: size and variety of their collection. You have so many more options with Omega than you do with Rolex, and if you narrow the Rolex and Omega offerings down to what you can actually get in a reasonable amount of time (we'll define that as "oh about a month"), then it gets even worse for Rolex as the only Omega that can't be had in a reasonable amount of time right now is the Silver Snoopy, whereas for Rolex it's a ton of their models.

Having said that, Omega currently has the same problem as GS used to have 2 years ago- current line up is too big and too thick. GS got the memo and have been releasing tons of smaller, thinner, prettier watches (without dial facing power reserves). Omega on the other hand.. got the memo and threw it out the window and made their watches bigger, thicker and of all things.. harder to get- think Green SMP, snoopy, coloured Aqua Terras, even precious metal soeedmasters.

I'm surprised Omega would go through the exercise of making someone at this level but the piece was apparently in high demand. Agree with you with reasons 2 to 5, but i am a bit reserved on reason 1. Yes co-axial is innovative but in terms of timekeeping accuracy my rolex 3135 movement is keeping +0.5 seconds per day while my omega 8800 movement is at +5 seconds per day. I test them dial up overnight after a day of wearing on the wrist. These numbers are consistent over multiple testings. *Of course my sample size is 1 watch each so im sure results would vary*, but on their websites rolex quotes their accuracy at +/-2 seconds per day versus omega's +0-5 seconds per day. So even the companies themselves confirm rolex has the superior accuracy. I guess this only really matters if timekeeping (on a watch😂) is a big deal for you. Just my thoughts. I have an excellent relationship with my ad. Bought just about every stainless model rolex offers including a steel Daytona. My grail watch from 12 yrs old was a Rolex. I finally bought one in 2005, a Black GMT 16710. I was immediately a little disappointed with the bracelet build (cheap) compared to my Tags and the fact that it wasn't actually as accurate as the hype. Also, the lume was not even as good as my Seiko's. In the meantime, my wife bought me a 1950 Bumper Omega and I loved it. Always wanted a newer one. Ended up in hospital for a while and was reading that due to the fact Rolexes had shot up in value people were being mugged all over the place for them. I realised I wasn't wearing the GMT anywhere near as much as I used to so sold it. Put £2k in the savings and bought myself a Planet Ocean the 002 with orange highlights. Could not be happier! So far absolutely astonishingly accurate, better looking and feels much better made. I wear it with pride and admiration.

For me, although I own a Rolex, the technology difference between Rolex and Omega is as objective of a reason as you can get to say Omega is better. Why I like OMEGA is for the same reasons as you Britt. I also wanted to add the history as another reason why I prefer OMEGA over Rolex. Don't get me wrong, Rolex has very rich heritage (The Oyster Perpetual movement, one of the first watches to introduce a water resistant case, the date wheel on the Datejust, the Explorer story, the Submariner and Milsub, the GMT Master for Pan Am Airlines, the Milgauss and the James Bond connection). However, I find OMEGA's heritage to be far more impressive (The Marine being one of the earliest concepts of a dive watch, OMEGA's involvement during World War II, the Speedmaster's stories during the Apollo missions, the Milspec Seamaster for the M.O.D. during the 1960s to the 1970s, the James Bond connection, the creation of the Co-Axial escapement, the METAs certification, high horology complications, the Planet Ocean Ultra Deep record, etc.)
@fontyyy Жыл бұрын
The "Bond connection"? They pay to be in the films. James Bond wears a Rolex in the original books. Ian Flemming (as in Ian Flemming's James Bond that's in the credits at the start of every film) wore a Rolex.
@brandontran4180 Жыл бұрын
@@fontyyy That's incorrect. OMEGA was chosen by Lindy Hemming in Goldeneye because she remembered her father in the Royal Navy and saw men in that branch wearing OMEGA. The Seamaster Professional she chose was from OMEGA's catalogue at the time. OMEGA did not pay Hemming at all. The Bond connection started off genuine. Sure, OMEGA feels like product placement now but it didn't start off that way. Bond wore Rolex in the past is because Fleming chose it due to him wearing the Explorer as a Naval Intelligence Officer. Connery through Dalton wore Rolex because that was the watch worn by British M.O.D. personnel during that time. Both Rolex and OMEGA earned their place as the Bond watch and there's nothing wrong with that

I think the value retention element of the hobby being made more prominent over the last few years has really soured a lot of it. @cos-9113 Жыл бұрын
I think you have to re-consider number one. The co-axial escapement may be cool, but it cannot be said to be better than Rolex’s mechanisms (or a huge number of other manufacturers). Rolex movements are more accurate and precise, have as good. or better run times, and as good service intervals as Omega’s and from an engineering point of view they fit much better into more wearable watches (Omega’s watches all wear rather thick). But think you left out another reason, the quality and finish of Omega is superior to Rolex, not that Rolex is bad, but Omega is better. They have more complex shapes and more interesting blends of polish and brushing. Omega can brilliantly polish Titanium, which Rolex hasn’t managed to do yet as well as make cases of ceramic. Not sure on number 2 either, given that Omega has sister companies Brueget, Blancpain, and Glashutte Original to help with high horology design and finishing. But at least Omega has high horology items on offer, Rolex doesn’t.

I think Rolex are so popular because they just understand how to make a good watch. What I mean is, they're simple, classic designs - ask anyone to draw a picture of a watch and chances are, it'll look like a Rolex. That being said, I'm an Omega fan through and through. Their case designs are more interesting, and elegant (those beautiful lyre lugs), and the movements are, in my opinion, second to none. My only gripe is I just wish they could make them thinner. Another advantage of Omega that you missed is choice. On the flip side, it bloats the catalogue - but what it offers is a multitude of dial, case, strap and complication variants for pretty much each watch. The Seamaster, for example, can be had on rubber strap or steel bracelet; in several different dial colours; as a standard 3 hander or chronograph; as a modern variant, or a retro style (300m or 300); in steel, precious metals, titanium, ceramic, or a combination. That's pretty impressive.

What Rolex is super great at, better than Omega and the rest, is MARKETING. Look at Wimbledon, look at Formula 1, all Rolex ads everywhere. And these are sports that happen every year, or like with F1, many times a year, unlike the Olympics which people only care about every 2 or 4 years. Those Rolex sponsored sports also attract more higher income people in general. Rolex is genius at creating the allure and image that makes them what they are today, but Omega absolutely makes better watches. Love your channel Brit, great to see you healed up!

It is arguable Omega make better watches from a technical perspective. They do have major design flaws (non tapering bracelets, ugly clasps, etc). The SMs He valve is an eyesore, the skeleton hands can make reading time less optimal and the bezel design is not as easy to operate w wet hands. Rolex make better, more elegantly designed watches.

I do find Omega's pricing strategy on some of their models very bizarre. I'm currently researching for a "big birthday" present later in the year. Ultimately I think I want a "luxury GADA" so I've looked at Oyster Perpetual and Aqua Terra.The 34mm AT is vastly more expensive than an equivalent OP (availability issues aside) or even a 31mm Datejust. It's also more expensive than the watch I actually fell in love with at the Omega boutique (the 38mm Speedmaster) and the Seamaster, which both feel like they "should" be more expensive as more technical etc.
@kokhui32liau88 Жыл бұрын
8900 movement is technically better than a 8800 n 3330. That why a AT cost more than a SMP n auto speedy. As for a OP, u cannot get 1 at RSP so why compare? N for that reason I believe the AT are price close to a OP to "snatch all the OP wannabe"

Very balanced and objective video. I do own watches from both brands. For me, Rolex has perfected overall product design (case/bracelet/dial/dimensions) and luxury brand image so wins on an emotional level in terms of how it makes you feel. With, Omega I appreciate the quality of engineering and value, I think Omega has some great watches that are more obtainable....but you do need to sift through a more unwieldy array of choices to find the real gems. I wish Omega would 1/ focus more on external product design as much as they do on movements, and in particular perfect their bracelets, and 2/ Simplify their ranges and options. I think the two combined would elevate the brand more as currently Omega is competing more with Tudor, than Rolex.

Tudor is being pushed and hyped by rolex pr machine. They cannot compete with omega on movements alone.

I've owned an SMP for a few years now and I love it. Recently got a promotion at work and I thought...yes, now is the time to buy that datejust 41 that I've had my eye on....but the joke was on me. Just as your video explains, I went into an AD just to be told that there were 0 available and they didn't even know when they'd be getting any in. What a disappointment. I had no idea Rolex played these supply limiting games to increase demand. Complete turn off from the brand. I turned right around and purchased a moonwatch. Couldn't be happier. Omega FTW.

Britt! Funny an Omega video comes out, as I have been shopping for one. I agree that for availability, price, and reference choices, Omega is beating the pants off Rolex. I think you nailed it. I have had both Rolex and Omega watches and I much prefer Omega. The diversity of the Omega catalogue as contrasted to the more narrow focus of the Rolex catalogue is a clincher for me. My two Omegas have been a Mark II Speedmaster and a Ploprof. My two Rolexes have been an OP Date Just and a Yacht-Master I. I have found a much greater level of engagement with my Omegas. My next Omega grail is the Bullhead Seamaster which is the kind of idiosyncratic reference that does not exist in the Rolex catalogue and never will. The difference between Omega and Rolex is summed up by one fact: Rolex turned away George Daniels, perhaps the greatest horological thinker of the twentieth century, when Daniels approached Rolex with his coaxial escapement. By way of contrast, when George Daniels approached Omega, Omega entered into an agreement with Daniels and brought the coaxial escapement into production.

They then explained that I would have to pay and I had hoped to get them asap and opted for 2 day shipping which still didn’t get here in time for my Wife’s trip. $175 and here’s the kicker. Today I got another invoice because they shipped the half link separately and later with another $50 for shipping and $50 for the half link.
