Is Optifine Worth it in 2024?

Today i decided to compare and contrast the installation process of Vanilla Minecraft, Optifine, Sodium, Iris Shaders, and Additive Modpack (Nvidium)! Enjoy :)

Some comments: - If you are new into modding using a modded launcher is definitely the way, some popular ones are Curseforge App, Modrinth App, AT Launcher, GD Launcher and Prism (this last one is my favorite). They can install Fabric/Forge for you and is way easier when it comes to Modpacks ~ You don't even need the Vanilla launcher anymore, as you can install vanilla intances/profiles into the modded launchers too - The performance only using Sodium is explained by the fact that Sodium only touches rendering, while Optifine is really aggressive and touches everything, including generation and various calculations ~ Having other mods that also optimize generation make the modpack be better than Optifine (except in the case of shaders as you mentioned, because of Nvidium, but you can disable that mod easily on a modded launcher) - There are ports of Sodium for forge (and Iris), I can recommend Xenon (port of Sodium) and Oculus (port of Iris) Imo Optifine is only worth it if you want to strictly play vanilla

im not new to modding but i just started using modded launchers and which one is the best i have cursgeforge and modrinth i perfer modrinth but what do you recommend

This comment is the reason I both like that I do and do not script videos because where as I stand by optifine being an easy and simple solution, Iris is overall better off you just wanna start modding but just want performance or Shaders I agree with everything said here

You running around on a normal world is what I get on a flat world looking up and with ui off

I wonder if you would've gotten better shader performance from the Additive pack if you did the test in the same world as the optifine world. Because at 25:10 that mountain is being rendered on the ice which might be very intensive, but at the optifine world it was mostly doing shadows from the trees. On a second thought, I'm not sure. It seems like the optifine shader had better performance.

I believe it's just due to the fact that shaders generally look better not of optifine or its done differently? Im not sure. Overall it's gpu dependant I think sodium and it's options are simply more gpu heavy is all

@AntKen yeah could be that, but also I remember seeing something on the sodium curseforge page (maybe theyve changed it) saying that the difference between optifine and sodium is much more noticeable on older pc's. I have a 2060 and ryzen 4600. I get way better performance from sodium than optifine, same with shaders. But tbh anything above screen refreshrate it just comes down to preference and I like optifine for modpacks and sodium for vanilla+ experience.

Crazy, I can't even reach 200 fps in Minecraft anymore. My hardware is really getting old now.. 🙁 I only now get 26 fps max and 120 with mods

Most common gaming monitors are 144/240 hertz, rarely 300 and 500+ So I really don't get the need for these mods, when the point should be to lock the frames to your monitor's hertz through either g-Sync or FreeSync

I mean, yes, you don't need to play games past your monitors' refresh rate, but* the fluidity of the game goes beyond the refresh rate. Having a game run at 500+ fps will still make or feel way smoother than if it was at your refresh rate of, say, 240. These mods also lower latency because the frames are responding faster, it lowers stuttering which is a real problem in MC and it can offer super high performance with shaders where as normal MC doesn't even have such.

I get around 300FPS in vanilla Minecraft, Optifine gets me to about 450FPS, and I get about 1800FPS with Sodium, Iris, Nvidium and C2ME. C2ME just loads chunks MUCH faster which is really nice. Also the reason that it's not respecting your settings is no fault of the game. That's how it's DESIGNED to work, it's a COMPLETELY SEPARATE instance of the game, in it's OWN folder

Sodium will def work better on certain cpu/gpu's - and I did touch that it was on its own instance of mc but that personally I don't like redoing things so for me it was a worse experience type thing - even if it is def better for most :)

I'm new to minecraft so if you have those mods sodium iris etc can you play with friends that dosent have these mods installed?

You can, they are client sided - meaning it only affects you

Changes too much, bulky, updates real slow, doesn't improve fps much on low end and high end compared to others and other reasons

That's where Sodium will help. He didn't mention it, but Sodium is WAY better than Optifine. You don't need to install mods, you just need Sodium and a few other performance mods. Minecraft will easily touch 40-60 fps.

@@asadfarraj i mean they said it just died when they had their render distance low in general, mods or not - if they havent tried sodium they should but itd still not be amazing, just enough to make it more barrable
