MirceaKitsune- exactly. if we only had things that were "natural" we couldn't have the pets that we have today, the medicine wouldn't be as good, and the foods we eat would not be sustainable for the world we live in. We manipulated the animals, plants, and overall world in a way we could live in better.

Wouldn't that also depend on what soil you decide to garden. Isn't there natural lead in soil so depending on where you garden the food you grow could be bad. It would also depend on how you take care of your garden from pests and disease in the end.

Critiquing organic agriculture is important - organic food should be held to a high standard - organic farming can still be improved. I notice, however, that this video was very light on criticism of conventional agriculture. Many synthetic pesticides are dangerous to farmworkers, to non-pest plants and animals (including beneficial insects like bees), and many move up the food chain in higher concentrations. Furthermore, pesticides are the hinge of GMO technology; nearly every GMO crop in production is either resistant to or a source of pesticides. I'd love to see a follow-up video critiquing conventional agriculture.

To all the people railing against this video: This channel is about presenting the science, not your heavily skewed, non-professional interpretations. The consensus among scientists on this issue right now is presented quite well in the above video if not slightly skewed in favor of the pro-GMO side. Science can be wrong. If you think it is, science welcomes you to look into it yourselves. Debate healthfully, but don't crucify ASAPScience because they presented the current science as-is.

Ugh, title is so misleading! Of course "natural" doesn't mean organic. Also, the crop yields are complete bullshit! It's been disproven that organic foods yield less. Even if it was true, using regular growing methods with GMO's and Pesticides leads to bad soil, super bugs and super weeds. Which eventually will lead to more pesticide use and completely kill the soil. So long term damage is very prevalent. I like that you guys show both sides of the argument but I wish there was more research done on the topic... we don't want more misinformed people.

I agree that GMO production on the large monocultural level is bad for the environment and not an effective use of soil nutrients, but as far as I know organic pesticides can lead to resistance as well. Probably GMO farmers should be forced to use different pesticides after certain intervals. On the topic of GMOs being banned in most european countries, most of the politicans who decide on these issues aren't nearly as well researched as they should be. I often hear about health ministers advocation homeopathy and other nutty things, then how could they always be right about controversial stuff like this? Especially when the entire party could lose an election by allowing GMOs.

it's interesting that this video didnt mention the negative impacts of synthetic fertilizers to the environment. It mostly has to do with the breed of plant. Standard plants, like those found in grocery stores, are bred primarily to be tough as hell so they can better withstand pests, pesticide, herbicide, transport, and storage. Taste comes secondary to these. Many heritage varieties of plants are far less robust but are bred for taste. In the past people had personal gardens so they could spend the time to care for the plants and pick them when ripe so these other factors were less of an issue. As a result these types of plants taste far better than standard varieties.

The short and simple answer is yes. Many plants grow and die with the seasons like annuals and biennials. Perennials will last multiple years but eventually die from old age or other environmental factors. As for growth specifically, yes, some will stop significant growth once they reach a certain size. These are determinate plants. Other will keep growing as long as there are enough resources and proper growing conditions. A common example of the two types are tomatoes. A determinate tomato will stop growing when it reaches a certain height but indeterminates will keep going. Let them grow long enough and they will look more like vines.
@simonedaniel
@simonedaniel 7 жыл бұрын
The height is limited by gravity, if the plant can't get nutrients to the top (it's too hard because of gravity) the plant won't grow higher.

Another reason people on temporary organic diets may seem (clinically insignificantly) healthier is because they are more conscious of what they are eating. So many of us just eat whatever the hell we feel like eating. Whereas someone who is making it a point to buy organic may also be counting calories, or increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables they eat.

I know what you mean by chemicals, but everything you touch whether natural or not is made of chemicals. Chemicals are not always bad. You need chemicals. Water is a chemical. Here are some other chemicals you need; air, proteins, sugars, salts, vitamins, minerals, and literally any other nutrient I forgot to mention. The lesson here is don't ask whether something contains chemicals. A better question would be: is this chemical more helpful or harmful to me if I expose myself to it at a certain level?

The big problem with organic food is the crop yield: if everything was organic billions would starve to death. Unfortunately, everyone has to live, so conventional production must be used, as well as GMO's. Even if there was a chance of harm from these methods, a few cases of cancer are much better than a lot of cases of starvation.

Really good video! Another interesting aspect when it comes to organize vs. Conventional plant agriculture is the amount of tillages and soil cultivation occurring, due to the restriction of weed controlling substances like glyphosate, more tilling is required for weed control which ultimately strips land of nutrients and leads to more things such as soil erosion. Everything varies from farming practice to practice but it’s a cool thought worth looking into! :)

My friend their is a difference between true organic grown on a farm that is not commercialized in any way shape or form and the organic that is sold in many stores. People love to hate on organic food but I feel that is largely because we are in a time where even if we wanted organic food most of us can't afford it, thus it is better to disregard it and act as though it isn't better without truly trying it and experiencing for ourselves how it makes us feel. Internal experience in regards to health will lead you to where you need to go much faster than any science can.

No, they are a science channel. I am a plant biologist and of the countless people I've met in this field not a single one opposes GMO. No, we don't all work for Monsanto. There is good reason for this consensus: GMOs are incredibly useful, and there is no legitimate study indicating any major health or nutritional difference. I've read many extensive, and honestly boring pieces of peer reviewed literature on this matter. If you care about this topic, I suggest you do the same. I don't necessarily oppose organic, but they are a business. The vast majority of organic food is grown in a similar manner to conventional farms, just with non-transgenic seeds and different pesticides.
@ViralSynapse

Well as a plant biologist, you're nothing but indoctrinated into a blindside way of thinking, I guess someone who out ranks you. French Prof. Gilles-Eric Séralini correct when he discovered that scientific feeding experiments past 90 days with GMO food and rats can cause serious health problems including tumors. Please eat you GMO and then goto your Big Pharma, for your treatments; but I guess you think there is nothing wrong with using Radiation compared to THC molecule, which strangles the cancer cells by cutting the blood supply, the Human body, has a diverse way of dealing with cancers, just not cancerous people like yourself.
@Enceos
@Enceos 7 жыл бұрын
+IngetKant the main words in your statement are "legitimate study". Do you know who decides which study is legitimate and which is not? FDA. And FDA is ruled by former executives of big food companies. Take Michael Taylor for example, who's been working for Monsanto as a Vice President for Public Policy, a very shady position in itself. Now he works in FDA as a Deputy Comissioner for Foods. He has rejected and overruled countless studies which prove the harm of GMO.

long tran every single thing you consume ever is a GMO. In most cases GMO means "selectively bred" ie planting seeds of the largest fruit or vegetable or breeding the most ideal animal. The "scary" GMO's are incredibly beneficial. One example is GM rice that has been modified to contain a lot of nutrients essential for survival. This was an experiment that can be sent to those who are malnourished.

Hi ASAPScience, I have a burning question; If a canon ball (probably made of iron), is heated up to the point where it's red, I'm guessing like 800 degrees Celsius, and is dropped from an infinite amount of height, what happen to the temperature and shape of the ball? Extra info: The ball is dropped in one ATM (one atmospheric pressure), the density of the air particles do not change and nor does the temperature. In this scenario the gravity which is causing the ball to fall does not affect the density or pressure of the atmosphere as said before. Note: I know it's not realistic but I just want to know what would happen to the ball in this scenario if that were the case. Would the ball heat up or cool down? And if so then what would be the pattern of heating up and cooking down once it reaches terminal velocity. Also please keep in mind the friction generated by the ball as it is dropping and how this may affect your response to this question. Thanks for reading!

I think this video is far too shallow to warrant its opinion. From what i've read it seems the Organic label in the USA is much less strict than over here in the UK/EU. When meat is organic, the animals are fed on their natural diet e.g. grass for cows instead of corn. This has major effects on the composition of the meat e.g. much more omega 6 fat., and also makes for a healthier animal. Furthermore, beneficial compounds that don't fall into the vitamin and mineral categories tend to be higher in organic foods. I think also organic means they can not use or don't need to use so many antibiotics but i'm not sure on the specifics.

I bought an "Organic" Honey Crisp Apple and another one that wasn't just for taste purposes & I couldn't tell the difference. So, besides ethics what stops stores from putting organic labels on fruit/veggies for a larger profit? & I know this is a silly question but is there a way we can tell if an item is actually Organic?

I know that the eggs I eat are from free range chickens that get most of the day outside and if they are not outside they have a big cage because I get them from my nan and pops house

I feel so honored to be the first comment. All of my hard work and dedication has paid off. Getting the first comment has been a dream of mine for many years, and I would like to thank those who have helped me along the way. First and foremost i would like to thank god for giving me this opportunity. Next i would like to thank my parents. I want to thank my friend Peter Griffin for being really skinny and always there for me. I would also like to thank my pet tadpole for surviving against all odds for over a week. Next i would like to thank the squirrel that lives in my backyard for climbing trees because that gives me inspiration that i need to get through the day. This is a special moment in my life and i would like to thank any of my unmentioned friends and family that have helped me along the way. This moment will be a moment that I will never forget. I just remembered a few other people i would like to thank; Abraham Lincoln, the fish I caught in the third grade, my light in my room because i wouldn’t be able to see the keyboard without it, the internet for letting me go on the bodybuilding forums, my house because without it i would be homeless, and last but not least i would like to thank all the people out there that actually took time out of their day to read this. I cannot stress how much of a big deal to me this is. I have been trying to be the first on a post for years, but that has not been possible until this amazing day. Hopefully my good luck will continue, but this is undoubtedly a rare occasion. If you asked me how I did this, I would say, you can achieve anything u set your mind on. To all the kids out there reading this, I would like to tell them to follow their dreams. Being the first is truly amazing, thank you everyone

Is it just specifically for some regions or country that this video is dedicated to, or do you guys have made studies or research on all the agricultural practices across all the different countries ?

thanks for the info, it's been really difficult to choose what kinds of foods to buy, now I don't feel so bad about not being able to afford more "organic" foods
