Apart from the voices, abilities and guns, which are all unique to characters, if you listen to the footsteps alone you can still tell which character is around the corner or behind you. That's a really admirable accomplishment by the sound team of Overwatch.

It's incredible how informative your content is. I mean, I've never built a game, probably never will. This video was fascinating. Sound design is something that I love when done correctly, but I never end up thinking about all the theories that go into it. Not only did this video articulate what made Overwatch successful in designing great sound, it educated me on how they accomplished it. Really informative stuff. Definitely subscribing to see more.

EA DICE already implement this concept since year 2008 until now, with the "Hi-Fi" setting. The "Hi-Fi setting turn up the volume of the most important sounds like dialog, enemy footsteps, 1st person gun fire, while soften up the rest. On the other hand, the "Wartpapes" setting which allows the players experience the real battlefield sounds(which I really enjoy it!), however the downside of "Wartapes" setting is so real that you are overwhelmed by the loudest sounds.

Dynamic sound mixing is pretty much essential for any game. Overwatch guns sound unique, but they aren't punchy at all, which is a shame. If a shooter fails at making the guns sound good, it loses half of its charm. I love when sound designers go nuts into making the stuff you do in a game rewarding.
@BattousaiHBr6 жыл бұрын
really? i always feel like reaper and mccree's guns sound are very satisfying. some others, like tracer's, not so much, but i think it's by design (futuristic gun and shit).
@TheMikirog6 жыл бұрын
@@BattousaiHBr You're right, those sound the punchiest, but even futuristic guns can be made powerful and punchy. Eliminations in Overwatch just aren't that satisfying unlike in Paladins (big WOOM after each kill) or a killsound and ragdoll physics in Team Fortress 2 (combined with already punchy guns). It's a small thing, but if done right, each kill will feel ever more like an accomplishment.

This is probably the video that made me think to become an audio designer after having dabbled in audio for some time in both listening (headphones) and recording. Seen how much detail there is inside a videogame's audio is just amazing, no matter how cluttered it all sounds like. At first, before I dabbled in audio-engineering I thought Overwatch (as a spectator, not really paying attention to it) was just a cluttered mess of audio. But after seeing this one, and a few other videos about the details of this game's quality, I came to realize how much it takes. Since I found out audio has become my passion, I was searching for which route I want and then I stumbled upon several channels that had some videos about audio. Including this one.

#AT2020 Love the video as usual, man. I did feel like I was lacking some cool things at points though. I got the basic idea of what you were trying to say all the time, but that wasn't really followed up with examples. Like, how does the sound change between different teams? What does overwatch sound like in comparison to something like Titanfall? What does the dynamic mixing sound like? As a person who doesn't play overwatch I felt like I wanted more from the video. That being said though, the example you gave with the splicing of three different games was perfect. Keep up the good work.
