The T shirt designs will STAY THE SAME because I really like the skeleton design and I think it will be a fun way to remember when the show was called waveform. Maybe we'll add a new design in the future but you'll always be able to get the skelly ;)

You nearly gave me a heart attack then, sir. How dare you play with my emotions like that. In all seriousness, I think your name is unique enough to hold its own without a series title. I feel like briefly mentioning your credentials as a voice to be heard would be a nice replacement to the title. Gives a bit of legitimacy right from the get-go of 'oh wow this guy knows his stuff if he worked on X and Y. Let us see what he has to say.' Amazing series and are one of the few channels I have that majestic subscriber bell set up for!

Hi Marshal. I'm taking a class led by sound designer Akash Thakkar. He mentioned your channel in one of his lessons and I'm so glad he did. These videos are amazing and I love the humor thrown in as I can always appreciate sprinkling in comedy whenever possible. Honored to have such an amazing sound designer teach us what he knows along with little tips and tricks. I have definitely subscribed and can't wait for future videos.

I truly appreciate your approach to your own professionalism. Examining your own past work can be so painful, this video shows how genuinely you're striving to improve yourself. Creative work like this is so iterative and if you're doing it right (improving your product constantly), you leave behind a trail of things that are perpetually inferior to your current product. Kudos!

Whew, what a relief! I'm glad you're not ending the channel, just changing the name. I only just discovered you a couple weeks ago and only just now finished watching all your videos. I'm nowhere near a point in my on game development where I need to worry about sound design, but the fact is that because of you now I'm *thinking* about it when I might not have thought about it at all ever. For that reason alone I am confident that when I finally finish a game, it will be a better game because of you. But also, even in your "worst" videos, you still give good advice for designers to consider. For the record, I found my way here via Game Maker's Toolkit. Glad I did.

Even with how critical you are of these old episodes I still love them. I'm currently working on a massive sound overhaul for HL2 and it was your video on skyrim's sound that made me really consider how I wanted my mod to feel and it was your video on GUI sound design that made me think about how even the smallest sounds can be designed in such radically different ways to support a certain feeling or mood. Without those early episodes, I don't think I would've put anywhere near as much thought into the exact kind of moods that I want to create with this mod.

Hey man, I went through the exact same thing! The only difference is that I didn't have so many subscribers. I pretty much unlisted / set all my old videos to private and started an entirely new channel dedicated to CGI with content that I feel that I can actually present. KZbin was a very different platform even a couple of years ago and quality has just steadily gone up, so keeping up is not as easy as it used to be. If you want to be seen you just need unique content. And you do have that. Sounddesign is such an interesting topic but nobody talks about it. Keep on going, love your stuff. Doesn't matter if it's called Waveform or anything else.

This will probably go unnoticed but I preferred when you focused on the sound design of a specific thing, like the halo gun or a genre, than focusing on a single game and asking the sound designers how they did it. I thought it was much more fun seeing you just go out and take on a challenge, just as anyone could. Either way, your videos are great and I hope to see more :)
@Kerimo0074 жыл бұрын
Dude, cheers for the videos throughout, however you decide to call them! Think it's also important to note that, while the vids you pointed out had mistakes, the videos themselves weren't fully false or misleading - they're still good perspectives to ponder over, just maybe not absolutely true. Like the layering bit, just needs a touch of re-wording, but the point about varied sound associations still stands :) Also, real pumped that you're doing well on your own path! Inspiring stuff.

I have a video idea, you could explain how sound gets made "realistic/ atmospheric" with the example being squad. I thought of it because the explosions and the gun shots sound so real. I don't know if you already done something like that and if not I hope you will consider the idea.

Funny you should say the hearthstone episode is your least favorite. The idea that jazzing up menus and other areas of games that aren't core gameplay with cool visual and sound design can add to the game's overall feel was really interesting to me. When I had to write of an essay on sound design, I thought of that video and decided to do something related to it. But then the deadline was 2 days away and I spewed out 3000 words gushing about blizzard sound design. Anyways I love your videos and I'm glad you're gonna keep putting stuff out :)

Hey Marshall, long time fan! I have a question, even though you said that you had no authority at the time to be giving advice on Sound Design, looking back do you think you shouldn't have made Waveforms episodes at all? If you ask me, your videos inspired me and a lot of other people here I'm sure to pay much more attention to sound design and try some for myself, and I still learned a lot! So if anyone thinks they're good enough to make videos about something, even though they don't have enough experience, should they go ahead and make videos giving advice and sharing their tips or not? Thank you!

Great to see another video from you! But since this is a turning point in the channel, I wanted to offer some feedback: While the thumbnail isn't necessarily clickbait, it's highly misleading and evokes an unnecessary negative emotional reaction. Rebranding something is not the same as ending it. Putting emphasis on the new content would give people excitement for the future of the series, instead of just relief that the situation isn't as bad as it appeared. About your thoughts on open-world sound design - of course, experienced professionals will have a better understanding of the process, but sometimes being caught in that system can prevent them from seeing what would be a better process. People without that experience certainly shouldn't assume they know best, but a lot can be learned from observation. There's nothing wrong with suggesting what would be the ideal process in theory. And regarding your closing statement of hoping you can look back in the future and cringe at videos to come. I understand the sentiment of aiming to improve, but it's hugely discouraging to think that you're openly hoping your advice now will be deemed poor advice in the future. It also has the danger of leading people with that mindset into being content with mediocrity. Surely the goal in any creative field is to master it - yes, there will always be more to learn, but that doesn't mean what one creates has to be imperfect. Mastery isn't defined by knowing all things, but by being able to perfectly delivery that which you know. Perhaps reaching that level can feel impossible, but surely creating something that will stand the test of time is what one should hope for if anything.

Yo, as a suggestion, do an analysis of last of us 2. Any aspect you'd like really, i think the depth and detail of the sound design in that game is just insane.
