People fixate on the image, and overlook the build quality. I think most consumer cameras nowadays (Sony + Panasonic) have adequate 4k images for pro jobs. What's nice about RED / Arri is the cameras and accessories are built like tanks. Having heavy duty ports and accessories that don't wiggle, or break is worth a premium if your shooting all the time.

I thinks it's RED's third best camera. Just behind the monstro and gemini. So if RED is important to you, it's an unbelievable deal.

Very well stated. I just got my Komodo 2 weeks ago. I’m actually more impressed with it than I thought I would be. It’s absolutely a specialty camera, but for me the Komodo is the perfect camera. As ridiculous as it sounds, the Komodo is actually pretty good for KZbin content. You can easily setup a shot and adjust focus and settings as needed with the app while sitting in the frame your adjusting. Beyond that, I’m beginning production on a documentary, and I knew from the outset that I’d need something that had incredible quality, but would also be very easy to run and gun with. As crazy as it sounds, I think the Komodo beats out the BMPCC 6k in terms of portability, and run and gun capability. And then of course you can rig out this camera to your hearts desire. Having that awesome dynamic range and the R3D really is a fantastic thing to have when shooting a run and gun documentary. Adding to all of that, this camera is of course fantastic for commercial projects. R3D is of course a standard in the industry. RED also has a certain shock value if you will when working with clients that know nothing about cameras haha. Really great all around camera that’s probably not for most people haha

Good review, but that last bit I've had some questions about -- the part about clients knowing RED even if they don't know cameras. I hear that in the community sometimes, but I've never met a client that really knew any camera brand or cared unless they were a DP or crew themselves. Do you really come across that much? I've asked some clients lately to create a mini survey on this and none of them knew what RED was, lol. These are corporate, music, and small business clients primarily.

@@dna8269 It’s probably very different for everyone, but it’s definitely true in my experience. I do a lot of work for tech startups and those guys seem to have a hard on for RED haha. Now I should say this is only true for maybe 35% of my clients. More often than not, know one knows a thing about cameras.

I do think clients care. They always ask for Alexa mini. And if not red is also up there. Perception is reality. And for the clients that do know, they will know the Komodo is the crash cam little brother to the dsmc2 or now dsmc3. And wonder, why am I getting the b cam as the a cam? I’m not saying this is always the case, and I struggle to tell the difference between older reds and the Komodo. But that’s my .02cents

Just finished a shoot in the Adirondacks 8 inches of snow 18-25 degrees Fahrenheit wind gusts to 40 mph sleeping in a tent batteries failed, memory cards(angelbird) failed, San disc extreme card worked, iPhone died( inside a pocket) had to use a 2 1/4 loop for a monitor. outside for four hours at a time never warmed up body or lenses for fear of condensation touch screen non functional when covered by a thin sheet of ice camera crashed a few times but always came back and most of the angelbird cards were changed part full for fear of corruption -going back out with Anton Bauer batteries. The 6k hq 1x2.4 is the most beautiful digital footage I have ever shot and for range and nuance exceeds everything I ever shot in 30 years of 35mm work. I wouldn’t call it hype. 2 minutes for boot? I dunno man...it didn't take THAT long to boot when I used Komodo. It was still in Beta back then. I didn't time it but I know if it was 2 minutes, I'd have harped on it in my first impressions video. I think that it's a very solid camera that produces a really good looking image. The iOS app control is beyond amazing. Still, I wont buy one until they drop below retail used. Right now there are a ton of slimeballs selling used Komodos for $2-3K over MSRP.
