I've started painting rcs with fdm and trying to find the best workflow. I've been trying with sanding, primer, brushing and haven't gotten around to trying the super expensive airbrush setup I bought. My workshop has a gaming setup, printers, way too much test gear, a hobby shop worth of rc parts. A collection of over 100 thousand leds of hundreds of types. Along with a recording studio for prog metal I write and no one ever hears hahaha. I do give away most of what turns out good or fix consoles and vintage guitar effects gear. I'm 45, retired and bored. I have way too many leds so if you ever want a few thousand just ask. I'll send a few lbs of them to anyone in Canada or the US. I was going to buy a giant resin printer but I'm going to hold off until I know if I'm going to use the unhealthy amount of paints and such I ordered. I find painting is calming like building circuits. I'm switching to pc or abs if I get to a point where I want to take my diy rc stuff out on the land, sea or in the air. I'm playing the new Spiderman. It's great. I ordered a new 7 string headless ibanez last night and built a psu for my electronics part of the bench. I'm moving all the switch mode variable psus over to the rc side because I plan on getting into rf and want to keep the switching noise out of the mix I'd I'm building and antenna and testing it. Great video. What do you use for crack filling? On fdm I mean. I'm a horrible artist but I can shred like a demon so I've been soaking up painting videos and taking notes. Can you spray thick acrylic paint if you use the thinner and retardant? I'm going to sell custom rcs or rent them for a little park I'm building in the spring. I live next to the Atlantic in a place with nothing to do. As long as I break even or can afford to give a few rcs away to people who can't afford them. I plan to make money renting batteries mostly. Lipos scare people shitless and I have a giant detached building with a fire box and battery balancers. I apologize for rambling, I was up playing Spiderman and wiring up my new bench all night. Haha. Best looking ps5 game yet. On par with the port of the remaster to pc. Insomniac are amazing game devs. The set piece events are fun as heck and I'm not a superhero fan. Way larger scale than part 1 or morales.

I love your videos! Painting is a whole new world to explore and get good at. You are right, thin coats are the key to not get brush strokes. I tend to airbrush as much as I can, since it produces a factory finish. I listened to you about silly putty and it really works great for masking! I use a medium gray base coat, but I think I'll go with your light gray from now on. I have a heat gun that's way to hot. The other day I was at Good Will and noticed they had a large assortment of hair dryers. A warm air blast is great for drying between coats, so I'm going back tomorrow to buy a used blow dryer. Painting is something I typically put off because I'm afraid of making mistakes. Acrylics are very forgiving to paint over so it's not so scary to go for it. Painting is very Zen like. When you become dialed in to detail, it's quite amazing how much you forget about everything in life and focus on the moment. I really enjoyed this video. I'm always impressed with your camera work, music, lighting, and instruction. Watching your videos is very relaxing. Thanks Chris!

Emil thanks so much! I airbrush a lot as well but I figured I needed to do this to show how to start with nothing. It killed me not to paint this with airbrush 😅. Your also correct heat gun bad idea it can actually crack the paint if it dries to fast also not to mention melt your plastic model. Hair dryer can work well especially if they have the cool button to alternate between hot and cold. Thank you so much for you comment.

Doing my first paint job of my printed model - Fry from Futurama. I bought cheap acrylic paints (they were on sale in an Australian supermarket) being my first attempt and found it needs 8 or more brushed coats before I get good coverage. Less thinnning with water didn't make much difference. Is it likely the paint is just not good enough?

Ha ha. Yeah I still get that way when I get a new printer. Personally I first print calibration tests like temp tower, retraction tower( for stringing) then I do something small like a benchy Or calibration cube. After that I do something a little more complex like a flexi print then I go all out and print everything. You can see how to do the calibration tests in my Cura series. Unless your getting a Bambu printer…

Hi there ... always nice to watch your video :) I have to say I also like chibi s and I print ( fdm ) them for more than 1.5 years ... But as afraid of painting ( a little bit less with your video , even if not yet jumped in it ) I'm printing them in multi colors This brings me in an embarrasing situation ; how to paint the missing colors and keep the color of the other places as it is ( as it's a good base ... even if I could add some lighning or shadow effects later on. how to primer a small area ? without priming the full parts ? I would prefer not to repaint everything ... :) Sorry if my question is a bit strange ...

There are different types of finishes. Like matte, satin and gloss. There is no right or wrong you just gotta experience and see which kind you like. I mix and match. But this model was done with satin paints.

So typically you just need to wait until it’s dry to the touch. If you have a little fan to put it in front of between coats that can make it for faster. You can make clips to hold them up. I did a short on the ones I made. As for primer you can just buy airbrush primer and hand paint it on.
