So glad you've found pastelmat, and this is a wonderful piece - it's the only paper I use and I absolutely adore it. I don't use anything other than pencil on mine pieces, would you consider doing a piece just pure pencils without mineral spirits?

I am currently drawing one with just pencils, no spirits. It works, but does take much longer to blend and smooth things out. But Pastelmat works even better and lovelier with pastel pencils. Absolute dream.

What you said 17 minutes in . . . Value matters more than color, you are SO right. I learned that quickly in my 20 years of quilting. You can bend or even break some color handling rules if you have sharp contrast to keep things interesting.

@@Lachri Is there a way to see the same image done in the three different surfaces, to see the difference? In my imagination I feel like watercolor paper would be the softest look, sanded the most coarse and Pastelmat the happy medium between the two..but I'm pretty sure that's probably not correct.

The end result is honestly very similar in all three paper types. You just have to adjust your technique to achieve that. That would be a great video though!

I miss the super fine detail I get with water colour paper but the amount of layering has me using this for my dog portraits. I love it. I am a bit disappointed in the coloured versions of this paper. The colours aren't as vibrant as I wanted so I could use the background as is. Not that big a deal. I create amazing backgrounds with pan pastels. Fyi, check every sheet of pastelmat when you purchase it. I ordered all sizes and colours and there was some serious quality control issues. There were drip marks and colour variations where the roller flattened the texture creating a line all down the page. Having said that the company I ordered from replaced everything. I love this paper. I find it elevates my art to a high definition. Thank for this tutorial.
@Lachri5 жыл бұрын
Oh great tips! I think I will avoid the colored papers. Initially I considered leaving my background white on this one and quickly realized just when drawing my roses in that that was not going to be possible. It gets dirty REALLY easily.
@BabySquirrelBeading5 жыл бұрын
@@Lachri Yes, I find it does get dirty. With my dog portraits I make sure to do the black last and keep checking my glysine paper so it doesn't smudge. Thank you so much for all your amazing videos. Ever since I first completed a pet portrait on pastelmat in two hours I have been hooked! I was disappointed that solvents spread so much on this paper at first, but I have essentially eliminated the need for them. I put in the darkest darks with watercolor pencils, then I go in with Panpastels and finish it off with oil based colored pencils. The Panpastel acts like the powder blender with oil based colored pencils. Generally, oil based pencils seem to work way better in pastelmat. I was surprised to see you use that waxy Derwent drawing pencil.

Another great video Lisa! Just wondering: Would you ever use the Touch up texture spray with the Pastelmat? Also, are the Derwent drawing pencils the same as the tinted charcoal pencils? I currently own the latter, along with most of the Prisma Colors, the Very Thins, some of the Derwent Studio Pencils, some of the Colorsoft, Colerase and around 30 of the Luminance. Do I really need to buy any more pencils?:) Thanks Lisa! Oh--one more thing: I have the odorless turpenoid. Can I use that instead of the mineral spirits?
@Lachri2 жыл бұрын
I only use the touch up texture spray and final fixative on brush and pencil products which I use only on sanded paper, so in this case, no, I would not use them on pastelmat. Derwent drawing colored pencils are colored pencils, not the same as tinted charcoal :) I can't stand the smell of odorless turpenoid, so I have no experience with that product :)

When you had issue with this paper and super fine details, how small were you working? I'm wondering if my subject was smaller if I would have had trouble with that too. In pencil when working from a photo, How do you soften edges to make them recede, and your central focal point jump out at you, is it with colour, tone and lack of definition?
@Lachri5 жыл бұрын
Sometimes it's by contrast but mostly it's from overlapping one color into another so that there is a very soft transition keeping that area out of focus. If you add harsh or crisp lines that draws focus to that area. :)
