28:00 It's interesting to see someone say the UK doesn't have a streak of mass movements/struggle. Britain was home to the Luddites, which featured property destruction, and the popular boycotts that contributed to the abolition of the slave trade. Perhaps it's in response to such successes that the state has in turn responded. What's fair to say is that there isn't anything innate about a people in terms of their ability to resist.

@@atticustay1 Agreed. I guess I had my lens focused on opposition to 'commercial activities' considered legitimate by the state at one point in time. But we certainly don't have to limit ourselves when looking for sources of inspiration/tactics.

Here is the catch 22: Politicians will do nothing worthwhile regarding climate, because most voters would boot them out. people still care more for their cars and their flying holidays than they do for their kids' future. We are just too selfish and stupid to think more than 5 - 10 years ahead - especially as any worthwhile policy change will mean short-term sacrifice. Best advice? Don't have kids. Seriously.

Did somebody make an estimation of how many lives will be saved thanks to that pipeline in East Africa though? Not even counting the second-order effects of oil and gas extraction, such as e.g. turning it to fertilizer which increases food production - but just counting direct effects, such as East African countries getting money from oil sales, which they can use to buy food, medicine, invest in life-saving infrastructure etc. I wonder if this offsets the 7k number of lives lost per year due to climate change.

DARA and Climate Vulnerability Forum estimated in 2012 that 400,000 people die per year due to hunger and diseases related to climate change and climate change was costing $1.2 trillion per year or 1.6% of global GDP. By 2030, the death toll is expected to rise to 700,000 per year, and cost the global economy 2.5% of GDP annually. If we have 4 C of climate change, many experts believe that we will have civilizational collapse and billions of humans will die. The reductions in agricultural output due to climate change is likely to also kill billions of humans due to starvation.

Personally I think that property destruction will be counterproductive due to the public backlash and repressive actions of the state that it will generate. I understand people's frustration with the slow progress, but you are handing right-wing politicians a gift by giving them something to demonize and mobilize people against. You are also limiting the appeal of your own side, because few people want to join a movement that employs violence (even if it is just violence against property). Non violent movements have historically been effective, especially when dealing with moving public opinion in democracies, and I don't see an explanation from Andreas Malm how violent action results in climate policy implementation by government. Maybe it convinces a fossil fuel company that opening a new mine or pipeline will be more trouble than its worth, but the fundamental thing is new governmental policies, and I don't see violent action getting us there.

I mean both of these things are so connected that they aren’t really separate things. Electronics and digital stuff is only possible because of petroleum and rare earth metals. Petroleum and rare earth metals and mining and stuff like that are what contribute to the production and pollution of digital products. You do not get digital products without the material and the electricity which is all created from the real capitalist end and not the financial end.

There are other ways to generate electricity that don't depend on oil. The surge in digital use (especially with things like cryptocurrency and NFTs) causing more pollution was because there is still so much electricity that is generated by fossil fuels / oil. He mentions in the talk that renewable energy projects like solar don't give as good a return on investment as oil projects do. There are plenty of other problems caused by capitalism, including financial capitalism and banking, but this talk was specifically focused on oil companies and the damage to the climate that they cause. They are the biggest damage.
