Welcome to Penang. I live a few streets from New Lane when I was a kid. Glad you liked our food.
@pishedbloke26 күн бұрын
New Lane is a place for tourists and hence the prices are a bit higher. The food is not bad though, so not a bad choice. My preference would be to go to Carnarvon Street for dinner, although it is a bit more narrow and busy. In the mornings till afternoon, you can try Cecil Street Market which has pretty good local streetfood at maybe 20-30% lower prices!

I went to these stalls at Penang at beginning of October. CHONG Charcoal Seafood Char Kuey Teow (Fried flat rice noodles), 888 Hokkien Mee (Prawn Mee), Ali Nasi Lemak Daun Pisang (Banana Leaf), Restoran Ramzan (Nasi Kandar or Briyani with Duck Curry. Duck Curry is rare). Its no hype. They are delicious. Unfortunately, my time is short. Many more restaurants for me to explore. Looking at Penang Famous Samosa, Auntie Gaik Lean's Old School (Peranakan / Nyonya cuisine. Probably pricey), Hameed Pata Mee Sotong, Air Itam Asam Laksa on my next trip.

@@voyagesdiary Yeah, they have some great restaurants all over the state. Even on mainland Penang. It will take a while. Enjoy the food while you are still there!

Yeah i'd say pad-thai is sweeter taste, the char kuey teoh is more savoury touched ! Adding a little bit of spiciness is the KICKs for the tastebuds 😋

Chee cheong fun or cheong fun translate to english… “intestinal noodles “ but of course there is no intestinal in it..😅 its because of it shape that looks like intestinal.if you travel to Singapore Hong Kong you will find this same sounding food.

There are a lot more food in penang than you think. Example prawn noodles, asam laksa, nasi kandar, malay food, nyonya food.

Generally Penang street food is a unique culture and heritage of people. Those hawker foods are connected with each other family heritage of ancestors. The new hawker if their foods qualify and taste could not matches to the local population. They can't survive long in the business.

Food is generally better in KL compared to anywhere else. In Penang or anywhere else, the bad ones can still survive. Since there are many more choices available in KL and because of that, if their food is no good in KL they will already go out of business.

Both have their pros and cons, KL have food that Penang dont have, and vice versa. One thing you realise Penang dont allow foreign cook but KL does…😀

I agree, KL is way more competitive, so the good ones will survive. In Penang, even the not so good ones will stay. I won’t go as far as saying Penang is overrated, but KL definitely offers more options, variety and quality.
