Hey Claire! I took a long break from KZbin and one of the reasons was because I felt overwhelmed with all of the perfume i was seeing. I needed to get back to just loving fragrances instead of just buying them. This is a great video
@dr.claire.perfume2 жыл бұрын
Yes! I can relate, I felt the same thing in the autumn, I'd bought a lot and I just felt like the love had gone a bit. It's back now though and I think I am buying much less and being more focused with my choices. For me, I am someone with a channel that likes perfume, nothing more, I don't specifically but fragrances to review, I think doing that helps you to love your collection a little more maybe? Thank you so much for watching 😘
One of the best analysis of the fragrance world nowadays, so interesting the pandemic was the starting point for so many to the perfume addiction. I think fragances give an instant relieve, like food, you feel good when you smell a nice think. With the pandemic lots of us wanted to escape reality, and perfume was our way out. For me, perfumes are an escape from my life, for the sad truth of my 45 years old, when I see I will not accomplish all i wanted to do... Maybe an escape from depression
@dr.claire.perfume2 жыл бұрын
For sure perfume was a thing that was an unexpected trend during the pandemic. I think you are right, it's comforting and like many hobbies, a way of escaping reality and taking yourself somewhere else for a bit. And for sure, we all have those things in life where we don't feel good about where we are, but seeing the joy in little things really helps me to look beyond it. Thanks for watching ❤️

😱 Have not thought of this but I do think all the industries that get attention start to over do it. Like when makeup was extremely popular a few years back and the market was oversaturated and became overwhelming for makeup lovers. Eventually a lot of consumers even lost interest. It does seem like the perfume market is starting to head that way also.
@dr.claire.perfume2 жыл бұрын
Yes I think the endless pointless flanker fragrances are definitely something that is very telling... Makeup has for sure gone through all of this and brands like colourpop, whilst they are still big, you don't hear as much about them because people are sick of trying to keep up with the constant stream of releases.
@CarmenScentrix2 жыл бұрын
@@dr.claire.perfume ColourPop was definitely part of the problem with oversaturation along with Morphe and so many others. They flooded the market and people lost interest. I love to observe and predict trends in our culture. It's fascinating to me.

Yes, I am not criticising too much cos I do a lot of these things myself 😂 I just want to point it out because with industries like makeup, there's been a bit more of a momentum for some change and a slowdown of releases, at least for some brands, but perfume feels like it's still stuck on full speed.

I'm sorry I just realised that my reply isn't here, I wrote one a month ago for sure, sometimes they don't post... This video makes me further appreciate Claire’s annual reports of what she actually wore. It’s so true that those of us that have loads of samples decants and bottles that nearly wear something different everyday, do we really know those perfumes enough to describe them to others for purchase? I’d personally love to see more on KZbin with deep dives behind the noses, notes, and perfumes instead of the newest flanker or top 10s. Not sure if those would be profitable, but the ones I’ve seen, like on this channel, seemed like they were fun to make.
@dr.claire.perfume2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tara! I think this is it isn't it? Certain stuff does well on YT and other stuff really doesn't and that's why some channels post collections and declutters every few weeks, because those get the most views. But I agree with you, I love making in depth stuff about notes! It takes ages but it's worth it for me. Considering I have >100 fragrances now, I just can't imagine how anyone with more perfumes than that can actually know them well enough to talk about. I must say, some of the current YT uploads I’ve learned to perceive as red-flag ‘buyer encouraging’ & therefore watch with curiosity to see my response. I’ve also learned to be a bit more discerning with my purchases with the amazing helpful too that is Fragrantica to keep from adding multiples of the same scent families to my collection. Pressing pause now on my purchases, so I can enjoy my collection. Your uploads are fantastic - truly appreciated!

Oh yeah, perfume could easily be the new fast fashion. It's a little too easy to get caught up and buy every new release - easier still if one watches too many youtube videos (FOMO is very real). And then there's the expense - and this is just from buying designer fragrances, I've seen youtubers with huge niche collections that could probably buy a house someplace with a low cost of living 😅 I had to take a long break from watching videos and also reign in my purchases, especially after buying some scents last year that had dismal performance (and a couple that were redundant since they were so similar). Perfume is now back to being an occasional treat, and purchases are mulled over for a while before I pull the trigger (especially because some simply aren't available to sample before buying). I too have gone from using up a bottle at a time to owning a few at one go, but I don't know if I'm willing to go back to those days 😅 I also agree on those top notes designed to be instantly liked and encourage impulse spending. It's how I fell for Alien Goddess and Chanel Allure edition Blanche. Thankfully in both cases I waited for the drydown and eventually passed on buying. I do wish fragrances stayed on the market longer. Women of previous generations wore a signature fragrance for decades at a time, we might not have that privilege - partly due to inability to commit (what with these huge collections) and partly due to the discontinuations intended to make room for new releases.
@dr.claire.perfume2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree with all of this! I recently filmed my collection for YT and doing that made me really think about the amount of stuff I have bought and the potential waste and also the money spent. It's been a month since filming those videos and I've not been tempted to buy anything and I've also finished 5 bottles of fragrance which has made me feel better about things. It's true that watching YT just sucks you in to always looking for the next perfect fragrance, but the truth is that the perfect fragrance for you, won't be the perfect fragrance for others, and if it were, that would be very boring! Regarding the cost of fragrance, I made a video rotting up how much I spend in 2021 on perfume and how much I bought because I wanted to show just how much watching YT had sucked me in and be honest about the amount of money that starting on YT can cost you! Thanks for watching ❤️

@AndreasVibes2 жыл бұрын
“Not judging” 😂. I love your scientific approach to this topic and the section in which you roasted yourself felt as if you were talking about me. However, I am very far from decluttering, so the times I am wearing a fragrance a year might be approximately 0.36 times. I have realised that samples are usually more than enough to quench that thirst for new discoveries. In fact I don’t even manage to empty a handful of samples a year, let alone travel sizes or decants. I have to admit that my latest purchases were completely unnecessary and happened mostly because I wanted to support our local fragrance store. But indeed, I am just overwhelmed by the flood of new releases, all the new brands that try to get our attention, all these predictable flankers (how many iterations of Dior Sauvage can the market take?) etc. This is probably one of the most important fragrance related videos as it might make people think about their own way of consumption. I have to admit that my mind tells me that I should not buy a single fragrance again, but alas: the flesh is weak 😂. Thanks for this video!
@dr.claire.perfume2 жыл бұрын
Yes Andreas! I think a lot of us feel the same about all of this, it feels like a bit of an addiction. Fragrance in itself is unnecessary though so all purchases could be thought of like that on a very basic level. I suppose it's do they bring you joy or guilt? Or maybe a bit of both? That's what I get; a bit of both. None of us are perfect at all, especially those of us with channels. I just don't enjoy where people make money from watchers buying the fragrances they talk about or when there's no consideration given to cost because the fragrances were gifted and it's not entirely clear to the viewer. I think either of those two things can heavily bias opinions and how things are presented. Thank you again for the stats! ❤️

I just got into perfume less than 2 months ago. I’ve bought many 2ml size of these niche and high end fragrances. I learned VERY early that the likelihood of wearing these fragrances more than a couple times a year is high. I am also a cash only gal. No credit cards for me. I’ve bought full size bottles of Alt’s Cherry Smash & Mon Guerlain, which I love. It has to really speak to me before I’ll buy a full bottle.

I think sampling really shows you just how hard certain brands are to wear. I have tried certain brands that I just don't think I will ever appreciate fragrances from. I do tend to stick to designer mostly, but I enjoy sampling niche because it's interesting. I don't know whether you saw my most recent video or whether it interests you, but it's along a similar subject line, it's about how much I spent on fragrance in 2022 and how much I bought and how I feel about that. I have never had a signature smell and have always had perfume in scores there is the danger of things getting slightly out of hand. I haven’t bought many fragrances and bought all their flankers. I am a little more deliberate in my decisions and prefer to buy samples if I am really interested in a perfume, because sometimes I just can’t justify a purchase. I really love to smell good but I don’t want to lose my head doing so. For many smell is emotive, which is understandable. Owning several hundred bottles may rob the experience of its lustre and make it less of the treat I want it to be. People are different and want different shopping experiences. I guess it is up to every individual to decide what matters to them. Loved the vid and how you always give me things to think about. The perfume releases appear to be increasing exponentially I don’t follow social media because I don’t want to feel pressured to buy things.
@dr.claire.perfume2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure I ever had a signature really and truly, I guess I just had less spare cash so only had one fragrance at a time. I went a collector with Mugler at one point but I soon realised that was ridiculous because a person is not going to love every release from a house, it's just not realistic. I have 106 fragrances right now and for me, that feels like too much. I am not someone who buys to review, I buy what I want and then if I can review it, it's a bonus, but I do also have a few fragrances that I've never talked about cos they are long discontinued etc. You're so right, everyone is different and wants different things. I think when I started watching KZbin, I thought huge collections were amazing and I wanted that but having bought quite a few, I've realised that I actually only want stuff that I really really love and wear. Hi Claire, brilliant video. I agree with you on everything. Two things to add: 1. Flankers, in addition to being a farce and evoking a feeling of proximity to a beloved fragrance, are also extremely cost effective. The brand saves on production of a new bottle and a brand new marketing campaign. 2. What makes me sad about regular people overconsuming fragrances (not YT perfume reviewers where a large collection is explainable), is that a lot of them are simply addicted and don't realise it. They use it as an escape mechanism for problems of their daily life. And while for some I can understand it, I think others would benefit more from facing their challenges directly instead of giving in into this addiction, consumerism and escapism.

Yes I do think there's a point at which you can't ever get round the number of fragrances that you own and if you don't wear them, then what is their point? It's just stuff isn't it? Same with makeup and clothes. And I totally agree with flankers. It's all about the money. Thanks for watching ❤️

I absolutely loved this video, Claire, thank you! I too find all this stuff incredibly fascinating so love that you make these perfume psychology type videos! I am very conscious about which companies I buy from (vegan, cruelty free, mostly indie, etc!) yet I still have sooo many perfumes so am currently on a no buy so that I can wear and enjoy what I already have. But my wishlist for October (if I last that long!) is growing all the time...

Good Morning first time here! Very very good subject on the fragrance market. My first introduction to perfume my Aunt with Shalimar and then Chanel! I love fragrance, but it’s true, when I have seen these videos all you see in the background are bottles and bottles of fragrance seeing this it overwhelms you. I have a small collection but I use them all and when they were bought I have sampled them. I am one of those who like to smell different as the crowds. But still companies should leave more time of them in the market, probably sales$$$ was not expected, or they even reformulate them to see if gets the hype. 1,000 bottles on a shelf do they really used them up. I usually finish all of them if a I have a collection it’s empty bottles.
@dr.claire.perfume2 жыл бұрын
Hello! Yes! I also have a collection of empty bottles 😅 I agree, no one can use that much fragrance, having a 1000 bottles seems like a massive waste. I think the bigger ytubers get, the more money they earn and the more free bottles they get, so I assume for some it isn't a choice entirely, but yes they still buy because hauls of new fragrances on the market, get lots of views and make them more money... I try to use up what I buy and if I don't see that ever happening and I'm not reaching for it, then I declutter it and sell it on for someone else to enjoy. Thanks for watching ❤️

Not going to lie this video made me feel good about my collection, she is small but mighty! 😂 and I also use them for any situation and wear them whenever I feel like it 😜 what I’m scared of is one of my very favorite perfumes getting discontinued and never being able to have it again. But I guess I got to just keep in mind there are millions out there and somethings got a smell close to it, but also just be grateful that I was able to owned it in the first place. Omg my greatest blind by regret is definitely joy from Jean Pateau not an original formulation just the kind they had out at the time totally not for me was really sad about that $60 loss 😖 great video Claire! I’ve appreciated my collection so much more in the past few months and this video is reinforcing how grateful I am to have the ones I have and also feeling good about not wanting to keep adding😊 don’t get me wrong I have a special box of samples for ‘future purchases’ but I’m not in a hurry… 😅

I think there is always a trend, at least as I noticed over cca 10 years (and I am guilty of being a part of it because of social media). There was a trend when people were buying a lot of make up, then it was skincare and during the lockdowns the fragrance trend started. I did like watching haul and declutter video but now I just skip them thinking "another one again". I unsubscribed from many channels as well because they were just making me feel that fear of missing out while realising that I already have many beautiful fragrances that I cannot fully enjoy because my collection expanded over the last two years. Thank you for always bringing a bit different kind of fragrance videos.

Sorry KZbin is playing me today with replying to comments, yes snap with what you have written really. I have seen that shift in trends with makeup and skincare too. I have really cut down on the make-up channels that I watch because I hated seeing people declutter stuff that they'd bought and never used. I only watch one lady now who never declutters and is trying to pan her entire collection, which I find fascinating! Such an interesting concept. I definitely agree it seems to be along the same vein as fast fashion. Companies are going to continue to do what they think is profitable. I agree with Carmen Scentrix that eventually the market will lose some popularity. In the meantime its really up to the consumer to make the decision to stop or reduce purchases. Its not easy though. 🌷☀️ 👍I agree with all topics. You are right. I've been taking my time lately to heal from this addiction and miss the time, as I was a normal person and used one perfume , and as it finished I bought the same one and it was mostly Chanel Allure EDP again and again🌸. I still love perfumes, but I am controlling myself and making more conscious decisions, as for example: I wanted to buy Idôle Nectar but got a sample before, thanks Heaven I sampled it before, because its drydown is: rose in a dirty musk, a very stinky perfume after 10 Minutes on my skin, there is none from the popcorn note, no vanilla , only roses in a disgusting cheap very stinky fecal musk, it's a big NO NO to me.😫

I've been trying beige, Paris Paris and Misia. I think we all overconsume, especially those of us with channels. It's difficult to strike a balance. * Another point I wanted to mention is nowdays we have a ton of "Niche" and micro houses of fragrance, which I'm sure wern't around 10 years ago and their prices are very high (the reason why is debatable) and "Dupe" houses that recreate perfumes (La Rive, DUA, Dossier...). Everybody wants piece of the pie. Even fragtubers create their own perfumes.
@dr.claire.perfume2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the niche growth is a bit like the expansion in beer or gin brands... There's a public thirst for "authenticity" and artisanal products. But yes the price seems unjustified a lot of the time. Dupe brands probably grew because of niche and also because of mass spectrometry becoming cheaper so they could identify what was in the fragrances more easily... Thank you! ☺️ Yes 10/20ml bottles would be fab for flankers, I agree! I think with regards to fragrance safety, IFRA regulations are pretty tight, but effects of longer term exposure are more unknown. I guess though that fragrance is added to nearly every product, so exposure to some aromachemicals is inevitable however much we may try to avoid it. No one can be absolutely sure that everything used in fragrance is 100% safe, but it's as safe as it can be. Personally I think if you drink alcohol or drive a car, you are probably taking a much greater, many times over risk doing those things than wearing fragrance on skin.

I've been having these exact same thoughts but because clothes are more cyclical, I actually think the perfume community has become more like the makeup and skincare community. Having way more of one thing than you need, decluttering something that's barely or half used. Meanwhile, perfume, makeup and skincare are supposed to be items that are somewhat functional which you use till the end. That's changing with perfume. Now people have a scent for every mood, season and category and if a few months go by where they haven't worn it, it's out. But people used to keep perfume for a while. Also people seem to buy perfume just to try, already with the mentality that they can just sell it on if they don't like it. There are definitely elements of fast fashion though so I'm not disagreeing, especially in the pattern of releases and the need to have every new thing that comes out.
@dr.claire.perfume2 жыл бұрын
Yes I think I agree actually, perfume is way closer to makeup than to clothes, but the difference is people can resell that but they can't so easily with makeup and skincare (or not entirely hygienically). I definitely look at buying secondhand as something that is low risk because I've shown that I can resell it for the price I bought it for, so yes, I do buy stuff I havent tried like that because sometimes sampling is expensive for designer fragrances or even impossible if that fragrance has been discontinued. I've for sure overbought in makeup and also clothes, but I tend not to declutter those... I currently have a 5 fragrance rotation that is pretty modern on the guys side, I am looking for the same for my lady her favorite at the moment is Versace Bright Crystal Absolu, she likes viktor rolf bonbon, and flowerbomb as well as some of the opiums from ysl, valentino voce viva as well, I am looking for ideas, and shes all about the deal, seeing we like traveling so if you know any amazing dupes i know she would not mind in the slightest, new to the channel so anything from the community would be useful as well :D thank you all
@dr.claire.perfume2 жыл бұрын
Bright crystal absolue has lots of good dupes, but affordable fragrances with a similar vibe are Jimmy Choo Illicit Flower (very long lasting) and banana republic peony and peppercorn. With regard to Viktor and Rolf, did she try flowerbomb nectar? That is a stunning fragrance! I love black opium and I think loverdose by diesel has a similar vibe to it but it is more casual and stronger on the liquorice. It's a fun one. Viva Voce I have tried but nothing really reminds me of that fragrance. I assume Zara have dupes of all or most of these, you can easily find dupe lists online. Decanting fragrances into vials might be a good option for travelling too! Thanks for watching! 🙂

I’m one who makes videos about perfumes for different occasions but if you notice on a lot of videos talk about the same fragrances are being talked about over and over again.
@dr.claire.perfume2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think that's why I tend not to make those, because I feel like I would talk about the same ones... But actually I love a video about an unexpected occasion. For example, I watched one that was about break up fragrances, that was hilarious 😂 I feel like I need so many fragrances to make those kinds of videos but maybe that's all in my head? Maybe in reality, I could do them? 🥰

I’m trying to be careful of this while I’m starting my selection of perfumes. I say selection because I don’t want it to be a massive collection. I get decants of ones I want to try (and I NEVER blind buy). I also don’t want to waste any so I always have a conversation with myself about if I will wear it enough to justify a larger bottle or if a small one would get me for a few years. I also make sure that it will fill a gap. “Oh this would be great for winter! …I’ve already got a perfume that is great for cooler weather. I don’t need another. Maybe when my current one is gone.”
@dr.claire.perfume2 жыл бұрын
I think that's wise because it does run away with you. It's clear that it did with me and that was before I started KZbin... Never blind buying is a wise thing, but takes a lot of dedication to sampling. I do have a lot of fragrances but I recently filmed my collection video and doing that made me realise there were a few that were nearly gone, so since then 5 have been finished off and I feel a little better about things. I still don't want to buy too many bottles though.

We all have favourites and I’d say I only actually love or like about 15 perfumes ,I have decluttered so many blind buys ,I wish I had kept a count of the amount of perfumes I actually owned over the last 3 years (I’m sure it’s over 100 )🤦♀️
@dr.claire.perfume2 жыл бұрын
I record mine in Fragrantica, so I know which I've had and I review the ones I declutter so I know why I got rid of them. It's helpful! I agree Frances, I think my loves distilled would be a very small part of my collection and weirdly I tend to hoard the ones I truly love most, which makes zero sense 🤷♀️

@@dr.claire.perfume I actually started doing that a few months ago and I’m still working on it ,I need to check back to the first perfumes I bought and which ones I decluttered and record them

I don't want to toot my own horn (just a little) but that is one of the reasons I try so many samples (and having limited amount of money of course😸). Sure it's probably way more "cool" to open bottles on camera but most of the perfumes I try I don't like, so what's the point in that? I don't have the time to try to sell used bottles (not very profitable) and don't have the space to hold on to these.
@dr.claire.perfume2 жыл бұрын
Yes selling bottles from new is costly, you never make back what you spend. Secondhand however, I usually break even or make profit after fees. And yes there's a reluctance for people to try samples on camera isn't there? I've seen a lot of videos of people saying oh you don't know a perfume from a sample, but honestly some people open the boxes on camera so they haven't even properly tried them once before they talk about them. If I sample, I try them at least three times before I talks about them because my view change usually from the first try. Also with buying bottles, I'll sometimes have them months before I discuss them... I think sampling should definitely be more of a thing...
@silverliningfragrance14342 жыл бұрын
@@dr.claire.perfume I agree. Also I barely see any dents in perfumes that people are raving about, if you really like the perfume why it's barely used?
@dr.claire.perfume2 жыл бұрын
@@silverliningfragrance1434 well yes! That can be a reflection of a huge collection too I think, or having to sample fragrances for videos all the time. I find having to wear and retry things I don't like for videos unenjoyable 🤷♀️ I sometimes just wear them on my wrist so they don't bother me as much 🤣

I like how you totally threw shade at Hugo Boss for sacrificing longevity to have a nice opening. Lol. It's almost like these companies dont respect their consumers enough to even care about the longevity.

@dr.claire.perfume Жыл бұрын
That's good... that's not a lot at all. I think if you enjoy one of the Sauvage line, you are likely to enjoy the others! I've really tried to reduce my blind buying this year because last year I was blind buying a lot. Sometimes you just can't sample things affordably or at all and taking a chance can be worth it if you know you are resell the fragrance if you don't love it.

@@dr.claire.perfume. Yes definitely I’ve been really lucky because I’ve liked everything I’ve tried on my skin have worked for me. And I’m glad that only got angel mugler from the scent addict subscription and didn’t purchase a full bottle because I did not like that in at all on y skin.
@dr.claire.perfume Жыл бұрын
That's a good save! I have to say the modern formulation of Angel I am really not keen on. The modern formulation of Alien is less magical but I don't dislike it like I do with Angel. Patchouli is tricky sometimes and it's a very odd type in the modern Angel.

I'm probably in the minority because I hate watching decluttering videos. Especially when it's about expensive fragrances. The average person and I mean not very popular fragrance youtubers aren't gifted expensive perfumes so I think people should be more careful about what they spend their money on. Personally I don't like shopping in fast fashion stores because I find the whole experience rather stressful. It reminds me of going to the supermarket for groceries. Plus I find the quality of clothes debatable. I prefer buying fewer clothes of better quality which will eventually last me longer.
@dr.claire.perfume2 жыл бұрын
I have never been gifted anything by a brand, I don't put contact details so that might also be why, but the idea makes me feel a little uncomfortable. If you got something for free, there's already a bias there. Yes decluttering things that are expensive but that you potentially got for free is an issue for me. I watch one person who I know got gifts and then said that they loved them and then decluttered them quietly and sold them on eBay... They then filmed a declutter video and didn't mention that fragrance... It really makes you doubt what is presented here sometimes. Yes me too, I find Primark overwhelming in the main. I do have some items from there but they are few and far between. I love buying secondhand now and actually since the pandemic, I have bought very few clothes at all. Thanks for watching again, I appreciate it a d I hope you are well! 🥰

You bring up so many poignant dynamics that exist in the business of perfumery, a lot of which are overlooked
@dr.claire.perfume5 ай бұрын
Thank you! Yes, I think newness is carrying a lot of new designer releases that actually, in the main, just aren't that good. I read a stat about 80% of new releases are discontinued and out of production within 6 months. I don't know how anyone knows that, but I wouldn't disbelieve it if it were true.
