I recently saw a video in which an orthopedic surgeon said that podiatric surgeons tend to "overstate their credentials by using the term 'surgeon' ". This really infuriated me. What do u guys have to say about this?
@angelus_n0vus3 жыл бұрын
Ugh those kinds of comments/misconceptions frustrate me too. I'm just a pre-pod but if all DPMs complete a 3-year surgical residency...and perform surgery in their practice...I don't see how it is possibly an "overstatement" to say that they are podiatric surgeons.
@scoovadia94523 жыл бұрын
@@angelus_n0vus I'm a first year pod student from South Africa. I'm so disappointed with how things work over here. Podiatry as a profession in this country is very limited. We can't go into podiatric surgery at all. That's out of our scope. We don't even get the title of a doctor nor are we allowed to prescribe just any medication without 1st consulting with an MD. It's as if we're not even recognized as qualified professionals. I'm just so put off podiatry right now. Unfortunately, I only learned of all these ridiculous facts after accepting my offer.

Sorry, we just saw this! Strictly referring to the U.S., we have seen that we all form opinions based off of our experiences, and perhaps these individuals have only interacted with podiatrists who had their schooling decades ago when surgery was actually not taught. Or they simply have not met a podiatrist in person! Orthopedists who are familiar with podiatry, including every single one we've personally worked with as students, know our scope of practice and recognize that we are surgeons. The best we can do is educate those around us.
@TheDPMJourney3 жыл бұрын
We are sorry to hear that. Hopefully, you all can lobby and stand up for your desired scope!

😂 It upsets that you surgical podiatrists who perform actual surgery on ankles and feet refer to themselves as surgeons? Are you aware that podiatrists can elect to complete a 3 year Surgery residency? They perform foot and ankle surgeries in hospitals. Why can't they call themselves surgeons?

Great video, i subbed. Any tips for managing workload in pod med school? i have a complete passion for the human body and sports medicine, and I am confident enough in myself that I can achieve the grades, but the workload is slightly intimidating to me. Also, I am australian, applying to an american podiatry school. Shadowing is relatively unheard of here, our entire medical entry system runs differently. do you think the fact that i am shadowing a podiatrist here (seeing as in australia, podiatrists arent actually doctors, or proper surgeons, they only have a masters degree, ortho's take over the majority of major limb surgery) will affect my chances in my application, seeing as they arent DPM's? looking at most of the university requirements, a letter of recommendation from a shadowed pod is a must have.

Thank you for subscribing, Luke! You may have already begun school, and we're deeply sorry for not seeing your comment until now. First year of residency preoccupied our minds, but we're getting our footing back. Now as far as managing the workload, that would be an excellent video. There are methods that'll work for you that you'll determine over time, but you can try creating a schedule once a week to keep up with your studying and health-meal prepping, routines like quick run or gym session right after classes. Diksha would study by relistening to lectures while walking in place, etc. You will pick up on it, Luke. It can be tough, but there's always help along the way! As far as shadowing a podiatrist out of the country, the experience and hours certainly do count, but you'd still have to shadow a podiatrist in the US and attain a letter of recommendation from them! Like you said, there are differences that you want to show that you looked into and considered before you applied. Please keep us posted on how far you are in your schooling process!

@TheDPMJourney2 жыл бұрын
Most people would agree that in general, medicine, no matter which field, is a difficult path to pursue, not necessarily because of the material, but because of the rate at which you must consume it all and the sheer amount of activities and responsibilities you must balance. If medicine is interesting to you, and you have shadowed physicians/doctors/nurses/PAs, then please don't let the difficulty deter you! You will do great. If you need to discuss anything with us in particular about your situation, feel free to ask and even email us at thedpmjourney@gmail.com.

You can major in anything you'd like, you just need to take all of the prerequisite science courses and the MCAT. Check podiatry school websites to see what courses they require as prerecs.

Hey! Depending on your country, from what I've heard, if you specifically want to be certified as a podiatrist in the US but want to do your schooling elsewhere/live elsewhere, you would complete that medical degree (so if it's an MBBS, then do that) and then I believe you would return here and perhaps to a residency or fellowship? It is more extensive than that, but here is an Indian physician who did something along those lines: www.tysonfranklin.com/news/podiatry-legends/7870-103-dr-sanjay-sharma-podiatry-in-india

What would be considered a competitive MCAT score and undergrad GPA for podiatry school?
@TheDPMJourney Жыл бұрын
We would say overall competitive MCAT would be around a 500 or higher. A competitive undergrad GPA would be around a 3.3-3.4. We recommended to see the schools matriculating students stats the year before to get a better idea as well!
