Anyone using por-15- this video skips key things: 1) clean well with degreaser followed by a metal etching spray, as por15 instructs. 2) product works best on rust - it really grabs onto the texture/pores of rust - in this example there was so much “good” metal that really needs to be roughed up first to have a tooth for the product the best work on. Por15 on smooth metal looks good but is prone to not properly bonding and may eventually start peeling off. 3) protect/cover everything you don’t want the paint on - from brake components to skin (you can’t wash it off skin- have to live with it for a week until your oils naturally break it down). Would never go at a frame without better protection on things that shouldn’t be painted.

As you had pointed out - everything RUSTS on the East coast and for me I just moved here 2 years ago from AZ. Did you break out the wirebrush, and POR Cleaner and Metal Prep? I'm even temped to pick up Eastwoods 50gal Sandblaster for those hard to reach sections.

I have an 06 TJ and did the inside of the tub as well as undercarriage a few days after I got it (in CT). 12 years later it's all holding up except for the back bumper which I know I did not prep properly. Prep is critical and even more critical if you already have rust. The TJ was the 3rd vehicle I used POR15 on (2 restores) and it works for me. You just need to put in as much time as you would if you were going to shoot BC/CC. You know what I mean, you skim, it won't last. I will have to replace the rusted rear bumper.
@ronmiller79166 жыл бұрын
A note though...this stuff goes on really thin like water so a little goes a long way. But wear the gloves. It takes around 7 days to get if off your skin no matter what you do (and I've tried 800 grit). It's just so thin it gets down in your pores.
@ronmiller79166 жыл бұрын
Oh, and get the loose rust off with a wire brush first. POR15 has to stop the chemical reaction so if you paint over rust that flakes off, air will get in and restart the reaction. Been there, done that.

If the paint settles more towards the bottom of the shaft it can actually weight more in that particular area. This *could* theoretically cause a imbalance when it spins. If you are careful and paint it on really thin and let that dry, it shouldn't amass towards the bottom.

@@FlyingWheels You could actually put paint on top of the POR-15 to help prolong what is underneath it.

Never paint directly on top of rust regardless what any product says. Anyway to follow the instructions you have to first use Por15 degreaser, then Por15 metal prep to neutralize and protect any remaining rust. Then you can ad Por15 paint. And it doesn't stop there because it breaks down over time when exposed to UV light. So your need a top coat on top of the Por15 paint

@ej91476 жыл бұрын
Undercoating works well up until it gets a chip in it, then all that salt gets underneath and causes more rot and rust........
@rustyshackelford91566 жыл бұрын
Better yet, manufacturers should undercoat at the factory. That's obviously the best time to do it since each part can be submerged in paint/undercoating. Or the whole frame before it's installed. Why car companies are choosing not to do this I don't know. It almost seems intentional to limit the lifespan of the vehicle. When everything is installed, even the pros can't get to each nook and cranny so a professional undercoating job is only so-so effective.
@rustyshackelford91566 жыл бұрын

First saw naked differentials on the Buick RoadMaster's at the dealer when new in 1992. It's been downhill since then as the lack of factory undercoating or paint came increase the profit margins for the...Greedy Unions. In Troy area for work, the UAW workers where pissed because they had to contribute an extra $23 a month for free Health Insurance. The local TV channel interviewed a UAW worker at the end of his driveway. Behind him was a 36' boat, 2 newer Cadillacs next to a nice two story brick house on a new asphalt driveway.
