I had the incredible opportunity to attend, and speak on a lived experience panel, a symposium on metabolic psychiatry in Austin, Texas this week. I learned so much and am feeling so inspired about what feels like the future of psychiatry. In this video, I share my thoughts around this monumental shift that needs to take place in psychiatric care, and reflections from my own experience and sharing publicly on this channel.
Thank you so much Baszucki Group for involving me in this event and for everything you're doing to mobilize and propel this movement forward.
I understand that this intervention may not work for absolutely everyone. But there is no denying from my own experience, the experiences I've heard from others, and emerging research, that this is something really big.

I'm a psychiatrist in training. Glad to relay that for the first time I've heard some psychiatrists talk about metabolic psychiatry, and reportedly there was a talk about keto for Bipolar disorder at the most recent APA (American psychiatric association) meeting. Also, I'm planning to go into private practice and my brother in law is starting a company that will make software/an app to help connect psychiatrists with patients and monitor their progress if keto is prescribed.

When we finally had our adult son and brother back in our lives (he'd been on the streets for 8 years) and got a diagnosis (schizoaffective with bipolar) one of the 1st things we did was get him eating more healthy. The more proper medications and regular visits with his care team have helped him into living a more symptom free life. What really seems to aid to so much more quality of life has been going Keto. Because of my profession I was aware of what it could do to help in other health conditions so we decided to try it and its amazing to see the results! Not a cure by any means but my son has a life now! Can look to a future and not just coping to exist. Always work with your care team because eveyone is different. But here's to a better tomorrow in how all of us, whether you or a loved one, help to change the perspective on mental health!

I think another of the biggest problems is money. If you struggle with mental illness you often also struggle with money and keto is a very expensive diet. I have around 120€ per month for food. I simply can't afford it. The cheapest food that fills you up are carbs. Eggs, meat, dairy products, veggies are all very expensive. Fish and meat is something I almost never buy, because it's too expensive. To eat healthy keto I think you would need around 220-250€ a month here. I simply can't afford it.

Psychiatry hasn't changed in 2 centuries. The diagnostic categories and the technical jargon have changed, the treatments have a less brutal appearance, but the function of psychiatry as an institution hasn't. The internal contradiction between the desire to help people who are suffering and the social function to suppress problematic behaviors and emotions, that contradiction will keep sitting comfortably at psychiatry's core for as long as it exists.

I've heard people express similar sentiments before, but I take issue with them because they assume this position of psychiatry being a paternalistic institution that surreptitiously tries to geld people into submission to society, or deprive them of their agency or whatever. Psychiatry exists for the same reason as oncology, dermatology, toxicology, etc. exists, people want to cure what ails them, whatever it may be. You can misconstrue any of these fields' goals as being part of an institution that's trying to control you, make you a slave to society, or take control of your body, but people seem to be very sensitive because this particular field treats your mind. It's always good to be cautious when having a medical intervention, but believing that psychiatry has this systemic, nefarious motive to control people is just borderline conspiratorial thinking.
@marcodallolio9746
@marcodallolio9746 16 күн бұрын
@@balzdeep69 you've heard it before because it's a position that's almost as old as psychiatry itself, at least a couple of centuries. Anti-psychiatry had it's time in the light in the 60s and 70s, but it's always been around. Your position and mine are not new. However I didnt get there though exposure to anti-psychiatry theory. I've worked in mental health for more than a decade now, and when I started I shared your beliefs (I assume you subscribe to the biomedical model of mental illness), but after experiencing psychiatry from the other side, hearing psychiatrists discuss cases when patients are not around, I've changed my mind, now I share the position that social control, pressure from families and communities to suppress shameful or uncomfortable behaviors, are the most relevant factors in decision-making, and not the well-being and the future of the patient, especially when it comes to forced treatment. Anti-psychiatry might be conspiratorial, but simply looking at psychiatry like it was any other branch of medicine is simplistic. Psychiatry is fundamentally different from other branches of medicine, in many aspects. Its objects of treatment are not biological in nature, and its decision making is much more influenced by societal factors (ie the enforcement of social norms). One could argue that we need non-judicial institutions of behavioral control, and I'd be fine with that argument, I might even agree, and that would be an honest defense of psychiatry. Sometimes people are out of control, but don't commit any crime, so we need other forms of intervention, like sedation through dopamine antagonists. But trying to make it look like other forms of medicine, which historically has always been a major worry of psychiatrist, is disingenuous.

I’m glad medical keto is working so well for you! However, I think it’s overly optimistic to think the majority of the population will be able to commit to this lifestyle over the long term especially in this food environment. Most people fail diets even when it’s good for their health and they feel better and I don’t think we know how to overcome that yet. Medicine has to meet patients where they are at and offer treatments that will help them and they can be successful at. I think it’s for this reason that doctors are hesitant to jump to keto because it’s hard enough to follow for most let alone people who are struggling with their mental health. With that said more research is great and it should be an option I just think a lot of people would struggle with keto especially over the long haul.

@laurakaras5100 I imagine if most people were having hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia (that led to unemployment, etc.) due to certain foods, I doubt we'd have many issues with diet compliance. Most would start to see certain foods as toxic and change their diet. Omg hi! I am from Austin and I'm so glad you went to the symposium! And yes--Austin is a great place to eat with dietary restrictions! I wish I could have gone and shared my lived experience with metabolic psychiatry; I'm so l glad you were able to. It's so strange to experience something that's considered "fringe" or cutting edge and having such positive results. You just want to scream it from the rooftops! I can't express just how thankful I am that you are documenting your progress and raising awareness about how diet can affect mental illness. In 2018, I had an episode of psychosis, depression, and total insomnia that lasted months. I went from neurologist to psychiatrist, bouncing around aimlessly and desperate to find relief. It wasn't until an encephalitis specialist that requested an endoscopy. An endoscopy? I was so confused, but she pressed the importance between diet and mental health. I was so skeptical until I went on a strict anti-inflamatory diet and saw incredible results. I would not have believed it worked; I saw positive effects quickly. I am currently on a modified paleo diet, and it helps so much. I received a bipolar diagnosis and have been taking seroquel 300mg--the marriage of diet and the correct meds has done wonders for me. It has been such a frustrating trial and error to figure out what works for me, but I am in a good place. I completely understand the grief; I wish diet wasn't considered so "woo woo" as I feel like it would have helped me so much to have this information as a kid. I grieve so much time I lost to psychotic and depressive episodes. The following is an article I wrote for Medium in 2019: medium.com/no-end-in-sight/gluten-psychosis-how-my-diet-almost-killed-me-and-put-me-in-a-psych-ward-twice-cb1a633d1bd5

That’s an interesting point about clinicians needing to shift their identities and beliefs. Complicating this is the extent to which coercion and casual dehumanization exist within the medical model. The possibility of new therapies would involve seeing a client as a person holding possibilities of empowerment and recovery as opposed to a lost cause to be controlled. This shift is a stark contrast to the current paternalistic mindset, and may also involve admission of guilt and feelings of shame. Lauren, conferences are inspiring and I’m glad you had this experience. Metabolic Mind still seems a bit echo-chambery to me but I’m willing to entertain their messaging and research as part of the broader project toward mental health reform, which for me would also involve non-biological improvements like cultural competency, trauma competency, and abuse literacy. Hope you had a good flight back to Alberta and wishing you continued progress on your medical keto journey :)

I’m so excited for you!! I’m a big believer in nutritional and metabolic psychiatry. I can’t wait for the med field to catch up and provide the guidance and support we need to really implement. Big pharma is shaking in its boots- expect a fight from them and insurance companies. The trick is getting it taught in the med schools. Once it’s taught there insurance companies will begin to pay for the support people need to implement these changes. Can you imagine checking yourself into an inpatient facility and they employed keto as a matter of course? So many thoughts- so exciting!

The diet industry at large is to blame for a lot of the damage done to the average person's relationship with food. And it has long failed to be successfully combated by the medical system at large because the average doctor doesn't get enough education on nutrition. We need to start adding nutritionists and neurologists to the list of doctor's those who have psychiatric issues see.

Did you know that over 800 million people in the world are starving to death. Food is not a medical cure. Nutrition can be studied by doctors all you want. Is the doctor going to provide food for you all to eat to your nutritionally best? Who can afford to eat like this? This is really a meat-based diet. Beef is a fantastic source of protein and fats, making it a staple in the keto diet. Does anyone know that this diet consists of lot of very expensive food. So who is paying for all this nutrition?

So glad to see how much this has changed our life for the better. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. It has been a huge influence on me considering the trajectory I want to take my career as a psychotherapist. I'm not at a stage to make changes yet, but I want to go back to school, get my PsyD, and now I want to look into learning about keto therapy as well and how to possibly incorporate that in getting my degree. Might have to do the two separately which is fine.

If you haven’t read it, I recommend Thomas Kuhn’s “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions“, which describes how new paradigms emerge in science. It’s a dry read, but does discuss how new ideas and theories emerge in science, are tested, and if they work better than the old ones, come to replace them. I will warn you that it can be hard to get through, but is well worth the effort. I continue to hold you in the light

Lauren, you look beautiful and like you are thriving 🥰 YOU are a virtual testament on how holistic type measures should be considered and practiced by the medical providers in the western world. We are literally beholden to our medical practitioners because the way they practice medicine is mainstream. However just like every other industry or profession, change is essential and must include evolving. This symposium could not have chosen a more appropriate and intelligent human to speak to them about your experiences and this journey. Congratulations on an incredible opportunity!

I used to live in Austin. It’s such a cool city! 🌆 Where did you go to eat? Austin is known for BBQ which is also usually medical keto friendly! I saw you running around Town Lake! I use to run across that little bridge too. I hope someone posts the panel you were all on! I want to watch it :) It’s so great to see a video on Austin and mental health. It’s smart to take your ideas there. In the book Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell he talks about how Austin is the type of city where ideas grow and trends start. It’s probably a great place to get metabolic psychiatry on the map in a big way!

i love seeing you shining so much, and getting to be a part of your passion for science and research and teaching - as in, i remember you talking on videos ages ago about how on one hand it was so sad that you couldn't pursue your career as a researcher or professor (if i remember vaguely right) because of your mental illness but had been able to acknowledge that the way this youtube channel has evolved has allowed you to do something like it, only different. And as i watched This video it felt exciting to know all of this previous info and to witness you getting to take your own passions to the next level whilst also having such an incredible experience of renewed capacity and vitality. It's super inspiring and makes me happy to see you doing this Lauren, yay :) I have an autoimmune/neurological disorder called M.E. and it probably has a Strong metabolic component and i think maybe could benefit from medical keto too, i need to look into that and see if there is any research or are any examples of it working for my condition.

Psychiatry definitely needs to change. Diagnosed general anxiety in the mid 2000s. My psychiatrist would see me for 15 minutes per session every six months. Write up the scrips for effexor and ativan and send me on my way. After being hospitalized two years ago for major depressive disorder/recurrent with anxious distress I have a team that treats me. A counselor that actually listens and provides feedback and a psychiatric nurse practitioner to manage my meds. A two pronged approach to my mental health. They're great.

Lauren- I had the same diagnosis and changed to a biological medical regime. I was told I was ready to get tardive dyskinesia if I did not stop meds. It took 14 years to be completely med-free. Don't withdraw from meds too fast.

I've been mainly adhering to a Paleo Vegetarian diet since 2001 (I eat eggs). I suppose it qualifies as a type of metabolic therapy. I've found that eating eggs, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds (along with proper supplements) is salubrious and healthy for me. I am usually clear headed, and I can engage in activities that I want to do. I'm fond of organic foods in general. I'm not in ketosis, but my blood tests are mostly normal.

I think focusing on the body and emotions is the necessary precursor for mental left brain logical thinking health. Everyone has certain body traumas that in turn connect to emotional dysfunction . I do body healing like TRE tapping etc, look into Iain McGilchrist and Margaret Paul Inner Bonding. You will never fix your thinking with thinking alone. Some of my own schizophrenic delusions have occurred because of childhood trauma and repressing childhood sexual abuse. That is not to say that the left brain experience like the yang to yin is not still real and important, but per Iain McGilchrist the right brain is the master and the left the emissary. People with Schizophrenia are stuck k in the left brain that is where they have always felt more comfortable and where they ran away from trauma (if you are an enneagram 5 you can relate) and so that is where the problems and repression shows up- predominantly in thoughts.
