I grew up on raw milk, and I’m doing alright at 75 years of age. Our cows were healthy and my parents knew how to milk a cow and keep everything clean. My parents grew up in large families during the depression and , not only were I and my brothers raised on raw milk, but most of my many, many cousins were also. My younger brother had a really rough time when he was first born. All the formulas the doctors put him on were failures. He got thinner and thinner. My parents were afraid he would die because he couldn’t keep any of those formulas down. My father finally had enough and went out and milked our cow and gave that fresh raw milk to him. That was the end of the vomiting up every drop of milk he drank. He started gaining weight and didn’t have any more formula problems. We also raised our own chickens both to eat and for their eggs as well as raising our own beef for meat. At 78, 75 and 71, we all are still healthy, have all our teeth and no cavities. I’ve never had a broken bone nor have either of my brothers. If you are worried about “BLV”, you should have your cows tested. In my day, cows could be a source of tuberculosis which a lot of people died from back then. Ours got tested every year before we started milking them. As with all food, you have to be meticulous about cleanliness and the health of your animals.

Central Star Diagnostics offers disease testing. Soooo easy! And you can also do milk samples if you are fearful of doing your own blood draw. We disease test our miniature jerseys every year! BLV, BVD, Johnes. We also PCR test for Staphylococcus Aureus. All of these diseases are hard NO in our herd. I will add Central Star is also highly affordable, these are not expensive tests at all.

Its good to hear about this. You do such a good job of sharing on difficult topics and keeping it very practical and not causing undue anxiety. So I recall a few years ago one Homestead had a disease in their cows and even eating the meat wasn't recommended. It was good to see Miracle... I can't wait to see her calf. 💕

I have not drank store/pasteurized milk in 20 years. I would be more concerned with grocery store pasteurized milk. I have dairy goats and am very thorough in my milking procedure. Good job on how thorough you are, your customers are lucky they have you.

People don't understand biosecurity procedures. I don't have anything but chickens but I don't allow anyone else to interact with my chickens. I don't know where their shoes have been and these are my egg providers! With all the hoopla over bird flu and the killing off od millions of chickens, I don't take chances! When I do add chicks, the brooder is on the opposite side of my house, more than 1000' away and they are quarantined for 8 weeks before they go into the juvenile area near the main flock. Everyone should understand how important biosecurity is! Well said!

I started keeping dairy goats later in life, after retirement, had to teach myself as I went. Been drinking raw goat milk warm, in the morning, after putting away what the family uses, I drink what's left. I have frozen surplus milk, made yogurt and cheese, but don't pasteurize. So far so good, owe my health to the fresh milk and the exercise involved in producing it.

My mother, born in 1930 and youngest of 8 kids, grew up on a dairy farm where her father milked all the cows. In the early 40s her father quit when the government mandated pasteurization. He said it wasn't healthy and wouldn't continue working there. His oldest daughter started her own dairy at 19 and her daughter raised dairy cows too. I remember visiting them when i was 7 years old and having fresh milk on our breakfast cereal fresh from the cow at 6am. I'm curious if the BLV is ever found in pasterized milk, it's interesting

You grow up the cow organic on healthy grazing that has shade in the pasture, and you store the milk properly, you will then get to enjoy one of the finer things in life to consume that even out performs the shelf life of pasteurized. Poor health cows and indoor ones will not produce good enough milk to drink it 'raw'.

People have been drinking "raw milk" for thousands of years. It has only been in last 100 years that we were told that milk has to be "homogenized/pasturized". That is for shelf life, not for our health. We raised our kids on raw milk. We made cheese, our own butter, had cream. Was wonderful. We sold our milk cow when we moved to a city. Now, we are homesteading again, but do not have a milk cow b/c our kids are grown and gone and when not working here on our farm, we are traveling. We don't want to be tied down to a milk cow but boy do we miss it. Here in Illinois, we cannot buy raw milk from anyone. They have made it against the law. If there comes a time when we are no longer traveling around the country in our RV, we will be purchasing a milk cow. Oh, we also we also raised milk goats. Raw milk is safe and it is pure. I had our family Dr. tell me one time when I was raising my kids and asked him if we needed to pasteurize our milk from our cow. He said definitely not. Raw milk does not go bad. It goes "sour" and that is called making cheese, yogurt and the like. He told me as long as we are drinking the milk within 4 days, no problem. As for the cancers, I have done a lot of research too and just read the labels of the milk you get in the store and the things that are "added" to the milk. Give me raw milk any day of the week. Our food processing/additives in our food are full of things that is making us sick. Autoimmune diseases are so prevalent now as are so many other things that are common "diseases" now that were not even prevalent even just 70 years ago when I was born. Cancer is an epidemic in this country now in babies and all ages. Wasn't 100 years ago. It's all the junk in our foods now.

My Dad also had a rule about the way we treated our animals. Even the ones that were being raised for food were treated with kindness right up until the day they were processed. He always said that anyone that would mistreat an animal would do the same to a person. When you get that personal with an animal, nobody has to tell you when one’s not well - you just know when something’s off.

I eat a lot of dairy products and I like all kinds of milk. Raw is what I prefer though, and I don't see why people are so scared of getting sick from it. It's just plain dumb. They're the same folks who think there's such a thing as influenza.

I’m in a Herdshare. I milk 2 cows, and take it will me on my shift. None of us know how to draw blood. I’d love a video on that! Because I’d like to test them. (Both 2years old. One born on farm, one brought in. But if they can get bred by AI, we could have them a long while!). And I’d love to see you AI!
