From my perspective an addiction is when you prioritize something so much that other things in life becomes secondary. If you’re buying records instead of getting food on the table, you can’t pay the rent or other bills; then it’s an addiction and you need some serious help. I can totally relate to G.I and other viewers in this matter; I am certainly a collector and love music and I am so grateful that I’ve got a hobby that makes me happy.

I am after 5 decades of collecting and addicted. But only buying new pressed reissues of Jazz . This is now the new golden age for vinyl .

"Physical connection" rings true. G.I., as you speak of your love of performance. As an NT ex myself (Lab '81, Leon Breeden's swan song) and road rat, i am absolutely engrossed by the moment I enter that magical soundscape. My entire psyche is refreshed when I listen. McCoy Tyner's early work, Woody Shaw, Khalid Yasin (Larry Young) are my multiples.

I personally stick to having one LP copy & one CD copy. Maybe two copies if there is a remix option. Space & cost are the two factors that keep me in check.

It's understandable.

Page and Plant No Quarter is a big one for me. I don't have a laserdisc player, but I have the laserdisc of that performance and every other format that it was released on!😂

Love that one! Just discovered the original LP and laser disc myself!

That was my very fist concert - Page and Plant - No Quarter tour at the Spectrum (RIP) in Philadelphia - I was 12 and my brothers took me and it was amazing.

@NTXVinyl NICE! I started watching this video last night and slowly started to realize I was pretty high up for LZ Celebration Day and then remembered the Page and Plant collection 🤣

@PiecesofVinyl I am big time jealous of that! I've seen Robert Plant solo a few times, he still brings it!

I don't think record collecting itself is addictive i think some people are addicted to buying anything, it just happens to be that one of those things are records for some people. I could buy so much stuff but i don't.
@NTXVinylАй бұрын
I'd say things (items, hobbies) that are more niche, limited, and custom are much more likely to have addictive qualities versus every day items.
@bryanmcfadden4071Ай бұрын
@@NTXVinylI switched from collecting comic books and star wars toys for collecting records for decades now and now there's no market for star wars toys as I grow older , but people are certainly interested in my record collection over my toy collection , having room for such hobbies makes it tough. I'm addicted to the hunt not the product
@DreamstoRealityAutomotiveTVАй бұрын
Addiction is only dangerous when whatever you are allegedly addicted to controls the conversations in the room, has negative affects on people around your life or when what your allegedly addicted to is prioritized over paying bills or basic responsibility. The world is currently stuck staring into a screen, those people will say vinyl collecting is an addiction, I don’t care what people who do nothing think

I don't do multiple copies (usually) of an album, but my exception to that is The Police "Synchronicity". I think I have four version of that album, including the gold/silver/bronze version that I'm very proud to own! Addiction? Yep!!!

Nice topic. Probably all record collectors think about it more than two times...

I have multiple colored varients of my favorite soul artists today, and some of them have alternative cover art. I have a alternative cover Thee Sacred Souls debut album that is a UK Dinked Edition, I have 4 different colored varients of Jalen Ngonda- Come Around And Love Me, and one of them is a alternative cover art Dinked Edition. I also have 3 varients of Thee Sinseers that are autographed by the majority of the group. And last but not least is 3 colored varients of Kelly Finnigan's new album A Lover Was Born, that drops tomorrow (10/18/24) and that includes a UK Dinked Edition as well, plus the cassette. It's so much fun to get all these versions. My wife doesn't get it and my guys from work make fun of me but I enjoy it, and it's my version of fun.

I’m an addict too 😂 music has been a major part of my life. The only reason I would want multiple copies is some are audiophile, double record set and speed variations. I have to keep myself in check these days. Enjoyed the video GI!

For some people it may be about the music. But for others - and I see this on all the time in a vinyl group I'm in on FB - its amassing as much vinyl (doesn't matter what it is) as possible because of the dopamine rush of the so-called 'hunt.' When I see people posting piles of goodwill cast offs as if they've made a great 'score,' I wonder about their capacity to stop. Another sign I see in that group is when people post stuff and say things like I need to hide this from my spouse...while some may be kidding, others are dead serious. And we all know that hiding stuff from loved ones may point to a deeper issue.

Wow! I’m a long way from addiction, based on what you’re showing….but I can see myself trending a bit that way for a select few discs. I’m more inclined to broaden my horizons across genre’s want to explore!

A number of factors are involved I think. If you can afford it, it’s not getting in the way of the other more important things in life, then I guess it’s fine☺️

I totally missed that days challenge, where I would have posted photos of my multiple copies of The Yes Album, Fragile, Close To The Edge, Tales From Topographic Oceans and Relayer, covering many vinyl pressings, box sets, cassettes, CD's and Blue Ray 5.1 Surround copies of the standard album and the Steven Wilson remixes. My rational argument as to "Why do you have so many copies of the same album?!' is They may all have the same cover, the same band and the same title; they are not the same album. I also say, you don't bitch about my hobby, I won't bitch about yours. It's all harmony.
@rodgerjohnson733Ай бұрын
Thanks for including me in your video. It looks cool to see all of the albums on the big TV! I was wondering if you have 2 different albums released as a double package in your collection, and is this a rare occasion for record companies to do? I have 2 in my collection, AC/DC Dirty Deeds/ High Voltage and Led Zepplin 1 and 2, and they are in gatefold sleeves!

I understand 100% G.I. - I'm at about 4,000 records now and am culling some multiple copies to make shelf space. Not getting rid of the culled items have you, simple boxing up a few hundred to make room for more (there's always more isn't there). My maximum number of copies would be 11 copies of Trilogy by Emerson Lake & Palmer and 8 copies of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway by Genesis. Different countries, different labels, different pressing plants, different mastering engineers (help me now!!). If it's fun and makes you happy, I say "do it" - as you said there's much worse things to be addicted to, I'm going to be in the DFW area next week. Which of your shops would you recommend the most? Maybe the one with the biggest selection. I understand if you chose not to answer but is there any other store you'd recommend for someone that won't have a ton of time to shop? Always enjoy the videos - cheers from Central California!
