Things movies missed out from books: that first year Ron at 11 years old must've written a letter to his mum, asking her to make Harry a sweater and some extra presents when he realized that Dursleys wouldn't care enough to. Think about that, they're 11 years old, only known each other for a few months, Mrs Weasley just met him for a moment on the train station, but those presents are without doubt the first step to Harry becoming part of the Weasley family. Ron isn't just Harry's best friend, be becomes the brother Harry never had before.

I mean, the first book has him figure out and instruct Hermione how to get out of Devil’s Snare, reminding her she has magic and can burn it (which she forgets in a panic, as a muggleborn probably would). The movies reversed that scene entirely. The mechanics of how to get out of it, the characterization, everything-a 180 spin. “You’re a witch, aren’t you?!” ~Book!Ron reminding Hermione of her own agency in a terrifying situation “Good thing we didn’t panic.” ~Movie!Ron after panicking and needing to be saved by Hermione because he couldn’t keep quiet

This is largely feminism at play and an early version of debilitating men. People forget that in the books the three balance each other because they all have flaws. They intentionally made Hermione very Mary Sue in the movies because they needed a "strong female lead!". which is pretty stupid in a movie about a BOY wizard and his support role friends--one of which happens to be a girl. It's gross and it's why I'm not a big fan of the movies. Rowling is a huge supporter of it and it's very disappointing given her original ideas.

I think in addition to being the lynchpin of the trio, I personally think that he represents a 'street smart' while Hermione represents 'book smart'-ness. For instance, with the devil's snare in the books, Hermione says that it hates light and wishes she had some matches with Ron having to remind her that she's a witch and can literally produce light from her wand. See also the slug incident where Hermione doesn't know what a mudblood is and when Ron stands on his broken leg to protect Harry from Sirius (an action they give to Hermione in the movies). He does SO MUCH MORE in the books and generally in the movies if he does something, they move the action to Hermione.

To me the sweetest thing Ron did was that during the first year he told his Mom that Harry probably would not be receiving many or any gifts for Christmas and asks to sent him some as well. And also him coming to the rescue after Harry not responding to his letters in COS. This is when we see that Ron is Harry's support system, a kind and true friend, who despite his occasional jealousy cares deeply for his friends and their well-being. He is a very realistic character and it's a shame they removed that from the movies.

When I gave the books to my then new boyfriend to read (yes, the conversation started "What do you mean you haven't read Harry Potter?!"), he immediately fell in love with Ron. He watched the movies before the books and with every passed page he was telling me how Ron is awesome, how they did him completely wrong in the movies and how he seems to save the day all the times. Ron has witty answers to everything, he is kind, he is true fried to Harry, he most of the time doesn't mind staying in his shadow and silently supports him. In Goblet of Fire it eventually grows on him, but he explains wizarding world to Harry (no, not Hermione - ponting at you, movies!) since the beginning and as much as Harry wouldn't complete the horcruxes task without Hermione and her brains, he equally wouldn't be able to complete it without Ron, who gives him everything that Hermione doesn't.

triquetka The movies were extremely biased against Ron. They make him out to be a bumbling oaf/comic relief character, when in actuality he was fairly intelligent in his own right. Hermione in the movies just took all of Rons good attributes and gave him the silly comical character, who didn’t really work as one because the twins are already amazing and hilarious.

Ron is the character that gives people a sense of realism. He's the one that's not financially stable like a lot of families in the real world, and he doesn't have a "thing." He's an outcast, with his best friends being the best wizards you could think of and his family outshining him in many ways, he's like a lot of us. However, he's loyal and trustworthy, and without him Harry would never know what it feels like to have a family. Ron also brings Harry and Hermione back to reality when they can't think straight, he's the glue.

SereniaSaissa That's no where near true. Ron may be afraid of a lot of things, but lets not forget how he volunteered to be tortured instead of Hermione in the last book. And when they still took Hermione, all he could think about was getting her back. He even screamed her name knowing very well he might've gotten killed for acting like that. Ron deserves WAY more credit than people give him. And he's like a brother to Harry. He gets jealous because Ron's always in his family and friend's shadows. I'd be the same way. But Ron was there for Harry for as long as it took.
@EditsByLyra6 жыл бұрын
I'm cringing that you even bother to ask this question, Ben. Thank God, you concluded that he was not, in fact, pointless. Also, I feel like you brush over some things to make them appear less flattering towards Ron. "He wins a chess match", more like he wins a chess match by choosing to sacrifice himself for his best friend and for the wizarding world at eleven years old. "He crushes the quidditch game because Harry manipulates him into winning." Way to take the credit away from Ron. Harry helps Ron believe in himself long enough for him to show what he was capable of all along. It's still Ron's accomplishment. "He loses his mind and abandons his best friends" Woah, I can't believe this is still up for debate. It was explained in the books. He meant to step out of the tent, storm off like we all do after a big argument, and then come back after cooling off. He just forgot about the whole enchantment, in the heat of the argument, and got stuck out of the charm bubble thing. And he cared so much about going back to his best friends, that he would hear Harry and Hermione's voices whenever they spoke of him and then a freaking ball made out of light grew from his heart and showed him the way. Ron is flawed, like you said in the conclusion, but that just makes him human. He's been there for Harry through so much, he's offered him a family. And even though he felt jealous of his best friend (because he wrongly thought that his own mom didn't care about him like she cared about Harry, he thought the girl he loved preferred Harry too), he was still willing to protect Harry at all costs. He wanted to sacrifice himself in the first book. In PoA, he stood up on his broken leg to protect Harry from who they thought was a death eater and wanted murderer by saying "if you want to kill Harry, you'll have to kill us too. Did you hear me? You'll have to kill all three of us." Later in the books, he reaffirms their friendship by telling Harry that he could count of them, that they would follow him in his quest to find the Horcruxes and kill Voldemort. And there's a lot more that I'm not even mentionning here.

And let's not leave out the fact that Harry could be a horrible friend to both Ron and Hermione. He was verbally abusive, dismissive of Ron's issues, and at some points just mean. But Ron stuck by Harry's side risking his life and opening his home. The way that Harry reacted to Ron being chosen as a Perfect is very telling, So it drives me up the wall when people questions Ron's merit. Ron had every right to leave, he is a human being who had his own issues to deal with.
@VixenVilleInge6 жыл бұрын
I think Ron has a couple advantages Harry and Hermione don't. Due to Ron being born into magic, he's got so much history and titbit type of info on the wizarding world Hermione won't find in a book. That's turned out to be helpful. Also, I think Ron is the most socially skilled of the three. He's neither a famous young boy who everyone puts on a pedestal, nor is he a nerdy outcast like Hermione. I think his social skills are an important factor to the group's success as well. Ron is the heart of their group, that makes him valuable as a character.

Whenever someone tells me that Ron is pointless, I always ask them to imagine the Harry Potter series without Ron. After all, if Ron is completely pointless, then his presence shouldn’t matter. But there are a few problems in a Ron-less HP series. 1. Family. Arguably Ron’s biggest contribution to the series is that he opens up his family to Harry. One could say that Ginny, Fred or George could have easily have done so but let’s not forget that none of them are in Harry’s year. F and G spent more time pulling pranks than wanting to be friends with Harry and seeing that they are both each other’s best friend, it makes it hard to have an impact on Harry. Ginny comes a year later by which time, it might be too late to imprint on Harry’s character. At 11 years old, Harry needed a best friend who was constantly with him at all times. Taking out Ron means taking out the Weasleys and without a family, Merlin only knows just how Harry might have turned out. 2. Harry’s character. Harry is someone who has a rather angry temperament though to no fault of his own, seeing how much pain he had to go through. Ron wears his heart on his sleeve and is no pushover when it comes to arguing. Without Ron there to support and challenge Harry at times, Harry often feels miserable and empty as seen in the two times that Ron isn’t around. Even with Hermione around, Harry still feels depressed as compared to the third book when he and Ron were against Hermione in the Firebolt incident. In that incident, we see a rather guilt- ridden Harry but one who was not so much in misery for not having Hermione by his side. Hermione is extremely important to Harry but as in the fourth book, it is Ron who Harry would miss the most. 3. Formation of the Golden Trio. Imagine having no Ron during that first train ride. Hermione wouldn’t be at odds with him and thus, wouldn’t have been crying in the bathroom. Would she and Harry still be friends without a troll to fight? Hermione, in her first year, admitted herself that she was unable to make friends and her know-it-all character back then made it hard to do so. The troll incident was thus crucial to the formation of the trio which couldn’t have happened if Ron and Hermione hadn’t been fighting in the first place. 4. Hermione’s character. I laugh every time someone tells me that Ron would become abusive to Hermione. Remind me again who set birds on whom and who is better at casting spells? Nevertheless, Ron is the person that Hermione needed for her personal growth. Hermione, at a young age, was accustomed to being right and that led to a form of pride that can be annoying at times. Ron was the guy that brought her back down to earth. With Ron constantly bickering in her face, it prevented any form of hubris from growing inside of Hermione. Yes, Ron is insensitive and immature but he was also very honest about his feelings and he treated Hermione as an equal rather than a Mary Sue. Ron is also highly protective of Hermione and can be seen defending her against Draco, Snape, Sirius (when he was suspected to have killed James and Lily) and at Malfoy Manor. She does the same for him as well. Add the fact that Hermione falls for Ron and vice versa, nothing else needs to be said. 5. Plot wise. Ron is the one who beats the chess task. The one who helps Harry break into the Chamber of Secrets (thank Merlin for that broken wand). The one who brought Scabbers to Hogwarts, allowing for Sirius’s innocence to be revealed, helped Harry countless times not only on missions but in life as well. Not to mention saving Harry from drowning in a lake. Ron is also important in giving information about the wizarding world to H and H. 6. Can’t be replaced. Just like Hermione, Ron is irreplaceable when it comes to the HP story. A lot of fanfiction have Neville going in place of Ron which works in fanon but not in canon. A timid and meek Neville who only comes to his own in the last two books would not be a suitable replacement for Ron. I could go on and on but at the end of the day, we must give Ron his due. Whether you like or hate him, to say that he was pointless meant that you really don’t understand HP. You can question the character of Ron all you want but his importance, especially as the second most-mentioned character in the book, is undeniable. Kudos to your video! Love it by the way. P.S, as you can probably tell, I am a Ron fan. I love Harry and Hermione as well. Ron is most definitely NOT just for comic- relief and it pains me to see how the movies have depicted him.

Just pointing out, even without Ron saying the line about bad wizards coming from Slytherin (whose line originally came from Hagrid in the book), Book Harry had already already met Malfoy at Diagon alley and on the Hogwarts express and already didn't like him. And Draco was sorted before Harry (alphabetically), therefore a big part of Harry not wanting Slytherin was so as not to be stuck with Draco and the rest of the 'unpleasant looking' lot at the Slytherin table. I always got the impression Harry (at that point) would have been fine with any house other than Slytherin.

Before even watching this video: Ron is the strategist, the common sense voice of reason who gives Harry and Hermione all the background information they lack about wizarding culture. He’s the heart, keeping the team positive and motivated, and both Harry and Hermione feel something acutely missing and wrong when he isn’t around to balance their intensity. Ron is Harry’s best friend, with all the emotional depth and fun and standing up for each other that entails. Anyone who thinks Ron is useless is wrong, and could probably use a reread of the books. Ron hate is just a function of movie-only fans not knowing better and shipping fans liking evil Ron as a plot device to further Drarry or Dramione. The fandom has been flooded with Ron hate for years and it is old news. We know the answer. He always comes back for his friends. This video never needed to be made.

Ron hate is mostly cause Harmony never happened. The fandom you're talking about with the shipping, they know Drarry and Dramione wouldn't happen. Harmony though, even Jk Rowling herself got herself backtracking later on and said she "should've/could've" done it instead of Hinny.

Ron has a lot of purpose and is necessary for the book. What’s obvious? Introduction to Weasley family, chess, saves Harry from drowning, teaches him about wizarding world, is the glue of their group, etc. However, there are less obvious things. Say Draco and Harry becomes friends (which, yes, could have been possible and who says it’s not beyond the scope of the books?) and Harry is a Slytherin. He is ambitious, which is a big quality of Slytherins, but also brave which made him a Gryffindor as well. In this case, Voldemort would have won. The Malfoys would have found out, and even if Draco doesn’t submit to pressure, or excruciating torture, his mind could have been read. Additionally, Harry wouldn’t have been able to pull out the Gryffindor sword to kill the Basilisk in CoS, made the connections he did, and would later have been crushed because he was a Slytherin but his parents weren’t. He placed a lot of importance and admired his parents, remember. Second, Harry and Hermione wouldn’t have become best friends. Yes, she went to the bathroom because of Ron. Yes, they could be friends. It is very unlikely they would’ve become best friends. They wouldn’t have faced a life threatening danger together, which the book directly states forms an unbreakable bond. Second, based off the books (I never watched the movies), Ron was the chattered of the group, Harry and Hermione were more quiet. Third, Ron was more or less Harry’s brother. They form a bond Harry would be unable to have with Hermione. No, this is not because of gender. It’s because of how closely Hermione follows the rules. Many times you see Harry and Ron wanted to do something dangerous with Hermione trying to stop them before ultimately joining them. Being safe isn’t a bad thing, of course. But Harry and Ron are both adventurous, likes to dramatize, woo girls, have been neglected in some way, and it’s safe to assume that they are both each other’s first best friend or even close friend As for his flaws, he is a human, plus is going through puberty. He is insecure because of his siblings and his social status. Everyone is like that. He is there for Harry and Hermione when needed, and is loyal. Yes, he ran away in book 7. But question yourself, can you say with 100% certaincy you would have stayed? A teen going against most of the world and the strongest villain alive with no plan and no one they can surely trust aside from each other? Probably not. It’s easy to blame him but put yourself in his shoes. Harry and Hermione also show human flaws. For example, Harry blows up and screams at Hermione and Ron for not telling him anything even they could not, or Hermione being mad at them for not asking them to the dance. Think of all the moments the group has had, ignoring each other when one of them could easily apologize first. Ron hasn’t had a lot of things he could call his own, and has a lot of expectations on him. Plus, he has a family to worry about. Ron has more to lose. Think of Harry when Sirius died and how he reacted. Hermione doesn’t have to worry as much, her parents are muggles as she already took measures to give them a level of safety. They are humans, who aren’t even adults, you can’t expect them to be perfect and emotionless robots who always make the morally or logically right decision. If you want to debate(debate not argue, no insults or cursing or anything that isn’t related), feel free to comment below and we can talk. I have only read the books and haven’t seen the movies,so keep that in mind. If you’ve read this far then thank you

In the books they're pretty balanced. The trio all has flaws and strengths. In the movies they kind of gave all of Ron's great moments to harry and hermione and gave ron those twos shittier moments. You could argue, in the books that hermione is the most flawed of the trio.

A lot of these types of stories have three characters who come together to make a whole and are essentially: the brains, the brawn, and the heart. Ron's the heart. Buffy has the same set up and the show The Good Place does too. In fact, the three brothers of the deathly hallows is kind of the same thing: the guy who makes the smart choice, the guy who makes a choice with his heart, and the guy who makes the choice for power.
@isabella-bh2zp4 жыл бұрын
This is debatable but I feel like Ron is the brawn and Harry is the heart. This is because Harry can perform really advanced emotional magic, like a patronus, even when Hermione has trouble with it because it is based on emotion instead of knowledge. Harry, like the second brother, said he would want the resurrection stone which is the emotional choice. I think that Ron is the brawn because he is always the first to fight someone, like in philosophers stone when he punches Malfoy, and he also says he would want the elder wand which is the powerful answer.
@Devonimp4 жыл бұрын
Being fair.... the fact that they had to go up against the MOST POWERFUL DARK WIZARD IN HISTORY makes reaching for the elder wand a pretty brainy choice. Me, reading this title: "Exxxxxxx-cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu-se Meeeeeeeeee?" Also uuuuh NO, Harry and Malfoy are not opposite. They're actually pretty similar: just because Draco seems to have a family, doesn't mean he has any that even resembles what the Weasleys are (awesome). Ron and Draco are the opposite: Ron's dad has values and is mocked at the Ministry, Draco's dad has no value and is loved at the Ministry. Ron's dad is part of the Order of the Phoenix, Draco's dad is a Death Eater. Ron has plenty of brothers and a sister, and was not wanted by his mother. Draco is an only child and is adored (in a weird way) by his mother. Ron's family is poor. Draco's super rich (and since you pointed that out, BOTH characters are pointing it out several times). Ron is a pure Gryffindor. Draco is a pure Slytherin. Ron's family looses A LOT and sacrifices a lot for the War, while Draco's family just runs away from the fight at the end of DH. Both are pure blood, yes, but they're actually the epithome of nurture over nature. We know that Tom Riddle is Harry's opposite and not Malfoy. Actually just like Draco vs Ron, in Harry vs Riddle we have the same "kind" of upbringing (as an orphan, not knowing the wizarding world and their inheritance) and yet opposite outcomes: again, nurture over nature. That's the whole idea of the books, the whole philosophy of the HP saga: we CHOOSE who we want to be. Where we come from doesn't matter! And Draco is basically the "failure" of that message (hence why JKR doesn't understand why soooooo many people worship Draco). Now for the things that make Harry and Draco very similar: both come from filthy rich families. Both have Slytherin's traits. Both are good at Quidditch and are competitive. Both are good at DATDA. The only difference they have is regarding their upbringing and because of what? Oh yeah because DUMBLEDORE had a hand in Harry's. Draco is the dude that Harry COULD have become (kinda like James, and I think even Harry himself make the comparison between his own father and Draco!) had he grown up in the Wizarding world smh I thought that was super obvious. That's exactly why when McGonagall is like "nooot these muggleeees" at the beginning of the first book, that Dumbledore is like "it's necessary". That's also why, coming to Hogwarts, the first choice that Harry has to make, reflecting to his future house (and possibly his future as a whole) is who to choose between Ron and Draco as a friend. Slytherin vs Gryffindor. Also while Ron is insecure because of his background regarding his mother and the way she treats Harry while it's so well-known that she didn't want Ron because she wanted a girl, Draco is just freaking jealous of Harry. He's *not* insecure. And I can't believe anyone would discuss Ron's use in Harry's world. It's the first time Harry ever belongs: with a friend and with a family. The Weasleys become Harry's family and I can't believe how ungrateful the HP fandom is to them. Molly and Arthur Weasley are the first people to show Harry some love and to give him food at their table like an equal. These sandwiches that Ron give him are the first thing anyone shares with Harry. So YES it IS important to Harry and the whole creation of who Harry is gonna become as a wizard. Like, I'm sorry, diminishing Ron's entire emotional role in Harry's life by pretending that DRACO (uuuuuuugh: facist, racist, bully Draco...) of all people could have played that role too, is just horrible. No-no-no-no-nooo. It's clear that Harry would have been a totally different person had he "chose" Draco over Ron. Now let's not forget that Ron really wanted to try and see if he could participate in the Three Wizards Tournament. And that he was mostly mad at Harry for managing to "trump" Dumbledore's spell and put his name in the Goblet of Fire without telling him how he did it (or even telling him he did it). And something you kindaaaa forgot to mention (weiiird umm...) is the fact that even mad at Harry, Ron was the one who came up with the idea to tell to Harry about the dragons on the first trial and even at that point he understood that Harry was in danger and he wanted to help him (and be on his side again). But Harry was too thick (and tbh kinda arrogant, so sure that Ron was just jealous of his success) to understand that so he lashed out once more at Ron. Ron vainquished all his fears for his friends, several times. He stood up, injured, against what he thought was a serial killer at 13 yo to protect his best friend. He walked into a giant spider's nest to support his friend and save Hermione's life. He broke the law at 15 yo to help his friend to save his godfather. He left his whole family in times of war, right after his home was attacked and he didn't know if his family survived or escaped, to try and go in a desperate chase of unknown objects with his bestfriend, at 17 yo. He lost a brother, got another one bitten by a werewolf, and another one crippled, for Harry, so ummmm? If y'all think Ron is useless I'll gladly take all your Rons and make them my friends!

There was one very significant negative point about Harry that people tend to ignore is that Harry genuinely believes he is better than Ron. He likes to pretend otherwise but even he admits it. When Ron is made prefect Harry is consumed by anger and jealousy. Ron and Harry are evenly matched in studies so the only reason to make Harry prefect over Ron is because Harry is the chosen one and he has a special bond with Dumbledore, Harry has an inflated ego and that makes him more like Draco. Ron is the most human of the trinity, Harry is just born special and Hermoine is super human genius but Ron IS US, most of us in life are just average just getting by trying to do right by our friends, right by our family, trying to survive in a world plagued by insecurities but amidst all that you have to be the best you can be, hating Ron is like hating ourselves WE ARE RON.

Well I agree on almost every aspect you have to think personality wise this is where Ron and Draco sort of come together you have to think that is family wise and what they were raised to think. Both Draco and Ron are very sensitive and jealous easily both have a love for quidditch as well as have knowledge for the wizard world and have joined a group to support there view point and it just happens to be opposite view points

@leeshdee92696 жыл бұрын
The movies ruined Ron, they shamefully neglected his good qualities and turned him into the comedic sidekick, except when he's an asshole. They really highlighted his asshole-ness. For example: Prisoner of Azkaban-book Ron: (in DADA class that Snape is substituting, where Snape mocks Hermione for being an insufferable know-it-all) "You asked a question and she gave you answer! Why ask a question if you don't want to be told?" (defending his friend) POA movie-Ron: (in DADA class that Snape is substituting, where Snape mocks Hermione for being an insufferable know-it-all) "He is right you know" POA-book Ron: (in the Shrieking Shack, where Sirius Black has revealed his true form and is trying to hold of Harry): "If you want him you'll have to go through us too!" (as he's standing on a broken leg while Hermione whimpers in the background) POA-movie Ron (in the Shrieking Shack, where Sirius Black has revealed his true form and is trying to hold of Harry)"...wha? huh?...flub?" (as he sits back whimpering without any clue what's going on while Hermione suddenly turns all badass for no reason) There are so much more examples of what the movie took away from Ron and gave to Hermione, making him yes, completely pointless in the movies.

Ron is a definitely useful character, in the books at least. The movies.... man. But Ron has always been my favorite; I’m the smallest of my family, and is often treated like a child, so when I read the books, I expected to love all the characters, but I mostly liked Ron (and Hagrid and Luna). He’s relatable to everyone, especially when you don’t have a Ron, and he’s the kind of Gryffindor I am; an unconventional hero (he’s the hero in the case, I can’t come up with a better word), that actually has flaws. Ron wasn’t just angry because Crookshanks seemed to have killed Scabbers, it was because Hermione never took responsibility for her cat and even after telling her to not bring that thing near him she still brought him everywhere. Second, if Ron wasn’t a character then how would have Harry gotten to Hogwarts? Yes he could’ve just written a letter but he wouldn’t have because we know in that moment he didn’t think of it. If Ron wasn’t a character then Harry would have never gotten through the chessmen in the first book. Rob also wouldn’t have been able to get the sword of Gryffindor in the lake in “The Deathly Hallows”, which would’ve meant the death of Harry. First when the books released, Ron was everyone's favourite because he was so funny and Harry was a sad boi and Hermione a smartass, who even Harry found insufferable sometimes. But Hermione was a favourite of the screenplay writer of the films, so she literally got a badass edit (which she definitely deserves) and of course you can't cut out Harry Potter out of Harry Potter so by default Ron got the short stick (read goofy idiot who likes to eat a lot) and Hermione got a lot of Ron's lines because she is so smart, she must have read it in a book.
@harshvardhan9906 жыл бұрын
Of course not. I feel like he usually gets overshadowed by Harry and Hermione. The best example is Albus and Aberforth. Aberforth is by no means a weak wizard, he can cast a Patronus, he can charm goats (whatever that is) but when you compare him to Albus, he probably can't hold a candle. Same thing with Ron, he can also cast Patronus Charm just like the rest of them, in fact, he did all the classes which Harry did which means he got Exceeds Expectations in DADA, Potions, Transfiguration, Herbology and Charms which by no means is bad. It's just that he didn't have as many badass moments as Harry and Hermione and hence we never got to see his talent.

Noticed something interesting during the comparison of Ron and Malfoy. There's a story structure technique I've been learning about lately that involves presenting two secondary characters who embody the opposing philosophy's that the protagonist is caught in the middle of. I.e. a theme of the story is whether or not relying on technology is a good thing, and the protagonist will meet a character who is 100% dependant on technology and another character who refuses to touch anything electronic. Not a very subtle example but I'm making a point. So early in the series, a big plot point is Harry figuring out who he is and where he fits into the world. Hell, it's an important theme all through the books, though arguably more so in the philosophers stone as he first enters the wizarding world. Then he quickly meets two other wizards, from old wizarding families, with opposing views on a wizards place in the world; Malfoy thinks being a pureblood wizard makes him superior to others, and thinks Harry should also consider himself above the riff raff, while Ron thinks it means nothing special and believes your character is more important than your bloodline. They offer Harry opposing perspectives on what coming from a wizarding family means. At a point in the series where Harry has just discovered he's actually descended from an old wizarding family himself (His mother was muggle born, but I'm pretty sure James Potter was pureblood). As the series continues Ron keeps Harry grounded, while Malfoy's insistence on superior status drives him into relative isolation and struggles as he tries to live up to his family name. Just an interesting observation from watching this vid :)

1. True, but Ron, and to a lesser extent Hagrid, was literally the reason for Harry's Slytherin bias, and even slightly for all other houses than Gryffindor, and probably prevented him from making more/other friends. 2. He was 12 :P - also, all of the obstacles were beatable by first-year students and either a test set by Dumbledore or, more likely, a case of bad writing because of inexperience. I mean, Dumbledore flying to the MoM on a freakin' broom? Like, really? And yeah, he flies the car to Hogwarts, breaks his own Wand and gets them both into trouble. Harry on his own probably could have kept a cool head, just spoken to literally any Wizard/Witch present, sent an owl, used the floo and and and.

Hagrid told Harry about Voldemort and most bad guys being in Slytherin, so I don't think meeting Ron influenced his dislike for the house. Hagrid also mentioned that hufflepuff is for loosers, so... Harry was shy, didn't know how to make friends (thanks Dudley) so it's reasonable that he clinged to first nice kid he met. And he later had many friends in his house and couple outside Gryffindor, just not as close (so just like irl). 2. Harry didn't have floo powder. He was alone with Ron in the middle of muggle trainstation, no other Wizards. They could've send an owl, but they were 12 so really expecting cool headedness is little too much.

In regards to the Crookshanks and Scabbers situation, I do truly think that Hermione was the one at fault there, pets are always a very touchy subject to people and Hermione was very selfish when it came to her cat. It was mentioned in one of the later books that Harry knew not to take Ron seriously with his criticisms of Pigwidgeon because he'd been devastated at the "death" of his rat, Scabbers in PoA, showing that even if he doesn't show it, Ron does care for his pets. Hermione should have respected Ron's wishes to keep Crookshanks away from the rat as the cat was clearly after him, but she did not, nor did she even make an effort to. In fact she kept bringing him into the boy's dormitory where Scabbers was and even when it seemed that Crookshanks seemed to have eaten him, she took no responsibility for the cat until much later on and even when Harry tried to speak to her regarding she still wouldn't admit she was wrong. "Personally, Harry was sure that Crookshanks had eaten Scabbers,and when he tried to point out to Hermione that the evidence all pointed that way, she lost her temper with Harry too." I know, I know that Scabbers turned out to be literally scum, but the thing is that they didn't know that then. In Ron's situation, I would have been furious with her as well because of how little responsibility she took for her own pet.
@elineverstraeten18726 жыл бұрын
Also, when Lavender's rabbit dies, she just starts explaining how Trelawny couldn't have predicted that. I know this is irrelevant to the whole Ron situation, but she just doesn't care about other people's pets (except Buckbeak)
@caitlinnishikawa58686 жыл бұрын
Exactly! People act as if Ron was being unreasonable with Hermione, and perhaps he had a few moments where he should have been calmer, but she didn't take responsibility for her pet. A lot of people at Hogwarts bring pets, and letting a predatory cat run free when there are rats, toads, and birds about is just irresponsible.

just saying if you read the books it tells you that crookshanks was helping sirus and is trying to get wormtail for sirus :l
@Nicole-bt4mj6 жыл бұрын
Well... Ron didn't keep his rat in a cage or anything in a place full of cats. Hermione can't be the only one who has a cat in Gryffindor and it's not reasonable to expect the cats to stay in the dorms all the time, that's not enough space for a cat. But I do agree with you that she shouldn't have brought him up with her into their dorm, that wasn't considerate or responsible at all and when it looked like he'd eaten Scabbers she should have taken responsibility and apologised. And on the topic I'd just like to bring up how Ron was just lucky nobody in his dorm had a cat before that. Also if Ron kept Scabbers in a cage when he wasn't in the dorm or on him then he would have been safely kept away from any cats claws when he wasn't with Ron which is a simple and easy thing to do so I think they're both at fault. But since cats seem fairly common as pets in the wizarding world then I think Ron should have taken more steps to ensure Scabbers' safety than he did (which was nothing as far as I remember) and so I think it was more his fault than Hermione's.
@Monsterkittiiiee6 жыл бұрын
@BrookeMarshall, though I understand what you're saying, you may have noted that I in fact quoted the book, and I have in fact read all of them, several times. I can’t remember if I came up with this or read it on tumblr lol, but I believe that they weren’t bad at first, but the slytherin house *makes* them bad, almost like it radicalises them. Slytherins naturally want to fit in, and feel supported so it would be so easy to get influenced into dark magic. If you think about snape, he didn’t seem such an asshole when he was a kid, everything he did was with good intentions, it’s only after he’d been in slytherin for a while that he called lily a mudblood. It makes sense that when you put a bunch of people with the same desire for power together, something bad will come out of it, slytherins at hogwarts must be so out of touch from other ideas. Which explains why pretty much every slytherin in real life is nice, but (let’s be real) none of them were in harry potter.

Kill Me Right. They want everything, cause there so ambitious. Slytherins just go the wrong way to achievewant they want. And there house and all of the stereotypes to along with it, push them. It also has to do with the time. Because this is the time people are working for Voldemort, and there children just want to fit in with there family.

I’m going to say all bad guys are in Slytherin because they are radacalised there, like you said, and because if Voldemort was actively recruiting people he’d do it through existing followers, all of which are in Slytherin. Also: the way JK wrote the books.
@annasullivan23306 жыл бұрын
Luna Lovegood I always saw it as the popular group of slytherins showing that aspect of the house, there could be slytherins that ignore what the others say and hang with others that do the same, and Snape wanted to be part of the popular group so he adopted their ideas.

Kill Me I probably worded this wrong, it makes sense for all the bad guys to be in slytherin, but I’m saying why all the slytherins are bad guys (or at least highly unlikeable)

Anna Sullivan idk I don’t think there was a single pleasant person in slytherin, even all the minor characters were described as being a bit of a douche

I love this video for how you turned it around but I don't like that you just brushed over Ron winning the chess game in book 1. They LITERALLY wouldn't have been able to get past that challenge of it wasn't for Ron.

Kerriscorner Here's the thing about Sorcerer 's Stone: Towards the end, it all becomes kinda pointless. Even if they , the trio, never get to the Mirror of Erised, Quirrel and Lord Voldemort still wouldn't be able to get the stone. Remember, you have to want the stone with all your heart but not want to actually use it. The only thing of real consequence is that Quirrel gets found out and dies. However, we learn in Deathly Hallows that Dumbledore already suspects Quirrel. So Ron's big moment in Sorcerer's Stone (and everyone else's in regards to actually getting the stone) is kind of irrelevant. But kudos to them still.

Desmond Gentle yes but for the kids themselves, it was a big moment for Ron. They didn't know about the Mirror dilemma that Quirrell was having at the end (Or that it was Quirrell at all, since they suspected Snape the whole time). They just knew that he was closer to getting it and they had to hurry to stop him. So from their perspective at the time, Ron was the MVP for that chess match

Kerriscorner this was annoying to me but what annoyed me most was how they totally ignored tje fact that ron saved Harry's life in deathly hallows. He would have drowned in that lake and voldemort would have won had it not been for ron

MrEevee you forget that Snape had to have been around, to lead Harry to the sword by means of the doe. I sincerely doubt he would’ve let Harry drown.

Ron Weasley is highly significant to the idea of the Harry Potter series. He came from a family of pure-bloods, he had a loving mother and a father who worked in the ministry, three of his brothers graduated from Hogwarts with high grades and one of them was a Perfect and Ginny turned out to be O (outstanding) at Quidditch both as seek and chaser. He in other hand found himself just as Ron who's very good with wizarding chess and a failure with education who befriended with The Boy Who Lived and the smartest witch in Hogwarts in his generation. He found himself as the fourth wheel, if not the fifth in the group, he was nothing but the funny guy in the trio and the Locket of Slythering just increased the level of his assurance of being completely useless and that he should revenge against his so successful friends, but in the end he understood that enviousness wasn't worth it and destroyed the filthy Horcrux, the soul of an unloved noseless monster and stood proudly and bravely with his friends. Weasley is our king!

We all need a Ron in our lives. Someone who can offer levity in times of trouble, help us connect to the simple things and what really matters in life, and someone who is willing to follow you down a dark alley when they are dreadfully terrified of the prospect.
