Show Notes:
The new rule change to fix commander death triggers has had an interesting ripple effect on the power of one specific legendary creature: Roon of the Hidden Realm. In this quick bonus episode, we discuss what happened, just how much stronger the flickering rhino now is, and what you need to watch out for when playing against him.

@@0220cj under the old rules you would always choose the replacement effect for it to go to the commandzone, as roon would bring it back from there or you could recast it in case of a stifle. Important note with day's undoing, if you cast it during your main phase after Roon exiles a commander, it will end your turn before your end step, allowing the delayed trigger to still resolve "at the beginning of the next end step" presumably at the end step of the following turn, the other "end the turn effects work because they can be done in response to the delayed trigger on the stack, functionally countering it.

@TheFoxlover93

@@apjapki Days Undoing is a sorcery, everything else is instant speed. If you have flash or something, you could get it to work. The reason being is cause with the trigger on the stack, if you end the turn, that trigger is still there. When you end, state based effects begin to clean the stack, hand size ect ect and so you clear the trigger like so. With Days Undoing, you don't get a chance to cast anything before you go to end of turn, not giving you a chance to put the trigger on and respond. If you end the turn and then end the turn however, I think that could work

This is actually a lot bigger than "one card" with Roon. Astral Slide, Astral Drift, Angel of Condemnation, Galepowder Mage, Long Road Home, Mistmeadow Witch, Mystifying Maze, Otherworldly Journey, Turn to Mist, Voyager Staff, etc can all be weaponized like this. And casting Ghostway or Eerie Interlude becomes more dangerous if anyone else is playing stifle effects.

Considering I almost got kicked out of my playgroup for using a [Emrakul, the Promised End], and then targeted exiling my friends feather on his turn and commanded him to leave it in exile, only for the entire playgroup to dissolve for the day in screaming anger; I'm confidant that this will not be abused in my playgroup, because permanently exiling a players commander is not fun or engaging in any way shape or form. I hope that perma-exiling a players commander will be etched into the unwritten rules of commander like mass land destruction.

my friends and I had never played with the "returns to the battlefield from command zone at the end of turn" side of roon. We'd always put our commander either into the command zone and call it good, or let it stay in exile to get the return if we assumed it was safe. Before, our roon player would use end-turn effects to lock out cards, so we always avoided that by just CZ'ing our commanders and never brought it back at the end of turn.

Hi Joshes, where this is a buff to Roon, it's a HUGE set back to: Jace, Vryn's Prodigy Kytheon, Hero of Akros Liliana, Heretical Healer Nicol Bolas, the Ravager Nissa, Vastwood Seer These don't have "may exile". They are exiled if the condition is met (then returned as Planeswalkers) and you can Stifle the commander on their own trigger. The "Stifle maneuver" could also work with cards like Fiend Hunter, Palace Jailer, etc. on any deck with the right colours. Not only works for Roon.

I mean, aren't we at the spot that we were in years ago with Hinder or similar cards that tucked Commanders away? The rules committee directly changed the rules to ensure tucking no longer worked with commanders. I imagine we will see modifications to ensure this effect with Roon does not work with Commanders eventually, if history serves as an example.

@cojaadams 4 жыл бұрын
@John Coolidge I doubt they'd ban Roon; it's 8+ mana spread across 2 or 3 turns to exile one commander. Blinking Perplexing Chimera would probably be more efficient, especially if you can ramp into getting it and Roon on the battlefield before everyone else's commander.

The issue is that they changed it for both graveyard and exile for some reason. They should've kept exile a replacement effect like bouncing, tucking, etc. The thing they wanted to work was "dies" triggers so I'm perplexed as to why they would open a whole new can of worms by throwing in exile for no benefit. Now we all have to hold our breath every time someone plays a Flickerwisp

It does... You don't just "end the turn", you wait for the delay trigger to trigger and with it on the stack then you activate sundial. If you used it say on your main phase then you are correct, it would try to bring the creature back on the next possible end step.

If you wait until the delayed trigger is put on the stack and then activate Sundial, it will remove the delayed trigger from the stack, and as it has already triggered, it will never trigger again. It says "the next end step" which is one specific end step, not the next and the one after that. Of course, if you activate Sundial before the trigger has hit the stack, you will just delay it, but that is the wrong way to use sundial. You're not trying to prevent the trigger from occurring - you're trying to prevent it from resolving.
@nicholaswagner145

Yeah so what you do instead is you end the turn once the trigger to return the creature is on the stack, so the trigger gets exiled. It then won't happen, but it already went on the stack so it won't happen the next turn.

Okay, so easy fix. Just make a special action, like morph, that lets you put your Commander into your Command Zone from anywhere at any time. That way you can let you it die and go to grave and then put it back into your Command Zone for free, or if it gets exiled, or shuffled, just put it back into the Command Zone. I guess the one downside to this would be that your opponents couldn't really gain co trol of your Commander because you could just 'unsummon' it back to your Command Zone, but lets be honest, we all hate it when our Commander gets stolen, or turned into a bug with Darksteel Mutation and we can't get rid of it.

wait, roon decks were not already using the stifle effects? keep in mind, these shenanigans still worked to fully exile other creatures as well, other then commanders. yes, this buffs it, but it was already strong beforehand

Well Roon has White so he already had access to permenant exile for non commanders that also use a card and don't tap your commander. However stifle effects do have multiple uses so yeah were good anyway.

Day’s Undoing doesn’t work unless you give it flash. If the delayed trigger for Roon doesn’t happen on the turn that the ability was activated because you ended the turn before it could, then it will trigger at the beginning of the next turn’s end step.

In decks with white and green i put in an eldrazie with the activated ability of pay 1 g put target card from exile into that players graveyard create a 1/1 eldrazie scion with sacrifice add 1 to your mana pool. Its incredibly good poltical power as I can help anybody bring back some of the most dangerous cards in the game to answer threats

Day's undoing does not work in that scenario, since it is sorcery speed. The card would just come back in the next end step, since the delayed trigger wasn't countered.

I am guessing that Murph either meant that his friend's deck that would side out Stifle after game one was a Legacy deck, or that it was actually Trickbind being used, since Stifle is not a Modern legal card. While it has been printed in the Modern card frame, it has not yet been as part of a set that was Standard legal (since the Amonkhet Invocation printing also obviously didn't feed into Standard).

I think more people didn't know about the replacement effect ruling than the permanent exiling. I play Sundial in my Cycle Zur deck. Use Astral Drift and just exile away. Iv'e never seen or heard about anyone using the command zone as a "fake exile" for a blink effect.

I played these effects in Roon anyway since this strategy always worked on normal creatures to begin with. Basically playing Roon means you're running creatures with good etb's and ways to interact with your opponents stuff 🤷‍♂️ this "buff" is definitely interesting for sure though. Very cool

Yes. And Day's Undoing won't work without giving it flash either, as to stop roon's trigger with an end of turn effect, you have to use it during the end step to exile the trigger in response. If you don't, it will just trigger during the next player's end step instead.

I was pretty concerned about this change when i first read about it as two of the players in our playgroup have Roon decks, but after watching your commanders myth video, I think the fact that we don't summon our commanders as much as we think we do makes this much less of a big deal.
