Dear new players, I started most of my decks from cards left over after drafts at local game stores. Most game stores hand out lands. All you need is a 99 cards and a legendary creature you like. Upgrade over time. Magic is a hobby, invest into it what you want out of it. (:

After my first draft some experienced players, that gave me tips for drafting before, just gave me their cards they drafted as a start to my collection. One started, others followed, I think I went out with over 200 cards. Next time the lgs just gave me 100 basic lands and I could get myself some of their bulk cards I wanted to use for my precon I bought.

I really appreciate this channel. I'm getting back into Magic after a 16 year hiatus and have been binge watching your Game Knights playlist. A whole lot has changed in sixteen years, and Commander has really appealed to me with the ability to play with cards that I remember as well as the new stuff as I learn it and become more comfortable. My first deck that I've built is a mono green deck that is all about pumping out saproling tokens. I wanted to do a squirrel deck, but there just isn't really enough cards for that, so saprolings was the next best choice. The rest of the deck is mana ramp. My primary choice is... mana dorks (I think that's what the kids are calling them these days), but I've been hearing that the current meta is to avoid them, so I have an entire sideboard that is land hunting. I have no idea how competitive this deck is going to actually be, I know it's simple, but I've always loved putting a ton of tokens on the board, and I thought this would be a fun deck to learn the format on. But I wanted to thank you guys for educating me on a game that i've missed and love, and I'm looking forward to diving back into the community.
@jacobjensen77044 жыл бұрын
Who did ya choose for your commander for Saprolings? :)
@KomradeKD4 жыл бұрын
@@jacobjensen7704 I built the deck with Nemata, Grove Guardian in mind, But I also have a Verdeloth the Ancient in there that I could use, but I think Nemata is the stronger choice. I also have a Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury in the deck as well that I could use for throwing out a mana dork each turn, permanent control and card draw. But I think my mana ramp is going to be pretty fast as it is, so I don't think the extra dorks are worth giving up Nemata's non-tapping ability to crank out a saproling for 3. I really feel like Nemata is the strongest choice for critical massing

For my money, one of the best "tools" I had while tuning my first precon deck was actually your video on deck basics; how much card draw, ramp, single target removal, board wipes etc. should go into a deck. I know it's a little old now, so it'd be super awesome if you could make an update to that video as a followup to this one (not to say you don't already have one in the works, because I have no clue lol). Another sort of map for just whipping a deck together to playtest is the 8x8 method. I won't go into detail here, since it's easily found through google, but it's a nice way to ensure that your deck is playable without too much fussing over it. If the play style doesn't suit you, it's easy enough to take it apart and start again, or you can continue with and refine the deck over time as need be.

“Group Hug is usually in green and blue, maybe white will be in there...” Ah yes, the politics of the Orzhov and the Will of the Council have been recognized. All is well

JW! My family used to have Tetris Tournaments on our household Macintosh computer when I was a young teenager. (13-15 years old) Love that game! Also, My wife was Assistant to the Master Storyteller in London, and used to be the Chapter Coordinator for her Guru LARP, and had several Vampire the Masquerade LARP characters as well. -- She definitely misses it.

My first Commander deck was a Dwarf (Boros) tribal deck. But I just started out with the idea of being a planeswalker who came from a nordic plane or realm of zelous Dwarves who raised dragons. And it is still my main deck to this day. The commander and many of the cards have changed but it's still my favorite! I started with Tarkir & there wasnt many Dwarves before Kaladesh & I've been hyped & waiting for Kaldheim since forever!

Great episode my dudes. Love your content. I wish this video was out when I started making EDH decks. My first deck I build was Kenrith Knights and it’s still not good. But I still have it. 😂

My first deck was Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest. I picked a bunch of stuff from EDHREC. It was fun to play, but was WAY too reliant on the commander. Learned a valuable lesson, even though I took it apart. Also, Jimmy. Chrono Trigger and SMRPG are two of my absolute favorite games, too. Excellent taste, my good man.

One of the best deck building tips I’ve ever gotten is this. Go to edhrec, find the commander you’re interested in, click your theme and the expensive filter. Find a deck and write down all the cards under a dollar. Those cards will always be synergistic for the commander. Cheap cards played at the highest level.

Precons! They are great for getting into the game and deckbuilding. You'll be able to play with the precon and get a solid feel for what its trying to do. then you don't have to try to build something from the ground up, use it as a skeleton of sorts, after you've played it a few times you'll be able to see that you can swap this card for that one, or switch up the mana base a little. It seems to me like a more relaxing way to slowly teach yourself what needs to go into a deck and what it needs to accomplish to do well.
