Example at the end maybe misleading in my view, loan could be beneficial given you pay around $700 to $800 interest for 10k loan but you are getting $3,800 return within the first month of the loan, net benefit around $3,000 for the year after cost of interest, and $10000 RRSP is tax sheltered until retirement!

In my view you should max out your RRSP contribution because you get ‘instant’ tax back (some cases upto 40% in high tax brackets) and any gain over years is tax sheltered until you withdraw at retirement. In my opinion TFSA is secondary I.e when you get return back from RRSP, invest that in TFSA. And of course if you have extra money left after RRSP contribution, invest in TFSA. Buy and wait is the key.

RRSP is not so straightforward. Banks and our gov't have sold us the rrsp from a young age. The majority of Canadians assume they are doing the best thing possible by sinking money into them.I don't dispute that with a LOT of careful planning and hard work rrsp can possibly favor the tax payer. It's a complicated tax trap that most will end up paying the same or more taxes in the end. MAX out your TFSA first.

I'm firmly against the use of RRSPs. My preference, TFSA only, then taxable acct, pay tax now, have my money FREE to use as I CHOOSE to. One can't really predict their retirement income and from what I hear from successful retired folks, they end up with a lot more income then they thought. Let's say you are retired and you have 500k+ in your RIF (what RRSP becomes). You have NO income to speak of, which will be very hard because at minimum you will probably have CPP and OAS. Besides the minimum RIF withdrawal, let's say you want to withdraw 100k+ that year, maybe you want to fix the deck, or have to pay medical bills... well guess what, you will now have much more than 100k income and pay large amount in taxes. And if you don't decumulate the RSP then when you (and your partner) die and pass it on to kids, well the whole balance is added to the final return and you must pay the highest tax rate on that. Don't forget. RRSP is not tax free. its Tax deferring account. you are not paying tax now , you are deferring it and will eventually pay later on. Conclusion: RRSP makes life complicated and you can't plan for everything that happens in life. I choose to avoid it
