Is Russell Wilson the most underrated player in the NFL? Seattle Seahawks Russell Wilson, is largely considered a top tier quarterback from most parts of the media however there is still a small group that clearly thinks otherwise. Through 8 seasons in the NFL, Russell has never had a losing season and has taken the Seahawks to the playoffs all but once in 2017.
While we hear adulation for Lamar Jackson, Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes from the media, the same cannot be said for Russell Wilson. In this video, we're going to examine the career of Russ and compare his stats to other all time great quarterbacks.
And lastly, right before the week 2 matchup between the Patriots and the Seahawks, Bill Belichick had glowing words for Wilson and agreed that Russell Wilson in a way, is underrated!

For those of you who don't agree that Russell Wilson is underrated .... today Bill Belichick, ahead of the Patriots matchup with my Seahawks said "Honestly, I think he's in a way underrated by the media and the fans, but I don't see anybody better than this player". I'll take Bill's word over any of yours!!! 😂😂😂

After greedy Wilson got his first MULTIMILLION contract Seahawks never been top contender in the NFL plus Wilson become the most sacked QB in the NFL - numbers don't lie! 2015 (10-6) 2016 (10-5) 2017 (9-7) 2018 (10-6) 2019 (10-5) (2020 12-4) so why with this average record he is getting $39 $$$$$$$ MILLIONS a year and consistently complaining! 2015 (12-4) 2016 (14-2) 2017 (13-3) 2018 (11-5) 2019 (12-4) 2020 (11-5 with Tampa) - Look at Brady's records and Brady always was getting paid less than Wilson and never complained! Now tell Seahawks fans why Seattle have to pay Wilson SO much with average team results? Seahawks could have a lot of Great players around if Wilson would not be so greedy.

🙏Russell Wilson is overlooked because that’s how he plays it. As a Servant Leader (it’s a thing - read the book), Russ is all team-first, personal-glory-less-important for the ultimate success. From the beginning, he’s been quick to take blame and long on handing out credits. America loves its hero’s IN YOUR FACE.🤛. I appreciate that Mahomes and Jackson are also surprisingly humble. In fact, they even talk the same way as Russ (except they don’t sing their own choruses! LOL) But people are crazy for those guys because of the crazy things they do with those legs. WAIT! This proves that we already knew the real reason Russell Wilson is so underrated: he’s short. 🤏
@bobbymarr1297

I get so annoyed when Carroll, Schotty or back with Bevell throw him under the bus blaming him for losses. He just takes it in stride and doesn't care, but they need to realize without Wilson they'd all be out of the league. You can't blame losses on him for making one mistake when you made 50. It's mind boggling to me how he can have some of the performances he had last year for us to barely win. You'd think if your QB had a perfect passer rating it'd be a blow out win, not a fieldgoal win over a bottom 5 team.

Mahomes isn’t humble. He thinks he is the sh*t, which is why he complained about being ranked #4 (behind Russ and Aaron Donald) on the 2020 NFL-100. He’s a nice guy, but he’s extremely cocky...not quite arrogant...yet! Mahomes is fake-humble.

That’s the argument I always make. They like to pretend that these other QB’s didn’t have elite defenses and great RB’s. Not only did they have those elements; they had better O-Libe protection, better receivers and better coaches. They also played in offense-friendly systems. Montana Brady Unitas Elway Favre Staubach Marino P. Manning Tarkington Aikman Young Griese Bradshaw Brees Rodgers Rothlisberger All had great defenses and RB’s, and - unlike Russ - enjoyed top O-Lines and Hall-of-Fame receivers throughout their careers. They also had better coaches than Pete Carroll. Why is Russ the only QB who gets discounted for his defense and running game, despite the fact that the LoB was somewhat overrated?

Colin Cowherd had a great take on the Pats/Seahawks game the other day. I am in total agreement with Colin that the Pats will cover the spread Sunday night. Give a Bill Belichick coached team more than a FG (SEA -4) and you always take Belichick. The Pats still have a solid D, and they are now running an offense that Cam is comfortable in. Super mobile QBs like Cam and Kaep have always thrashed Seattle’s D.... even when they still had the “LOB”, for around 100 rushing YPG and are able to dink and dunk with their drives in the meantime to eat a lot of clock. The Pats will turn this game into a low scoring, limited possession type game with their clock control ability. Just running this type of an offense tends to make games closer and it’s harder for either team to blow the other out, so 4 points is a lot to be giving the Pats in this one. It will also be interesting to see if Seattle still lets Russ air it out the entire game Sunday night, or if they decide to play the dink and dunk, run first type offense that the Pats will undoubtedly be playing. The Pats have the D to slow down Seattle’s passing game, so it will definitely be interesting to watch this chess match unfold. Too hard to bet against the Seahawks in Seattle in a prime time matchup, but I think this game comes down to the wire, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see NE pull off the upset, but I’ll take Seattle to win and the Pats to cover, Seahawks 23, Patriots 21.

I would rate Wilson on top. Even when the team is behind in points I've never seen a QB that is as cool and determined. He will do what ever he can to win and has had so many 4th qtr. comebacks that you can never give up with him as long as there is time on the clock to find a win. I am kind of mad how he is treated by the league. I remember when Seattle got him and every so called sports expert said he would never be good because of his height and to see them proved wrong is great. I really hope this year he can get the MVP because he has earned it over and over again. They should give him a all time MVP because he is very consistent every year he has played. At least us Washington fans love him and hope he can stay with the Seahawks for many more years to come. He has our respect which is worth more than a MVP I feel.

Respect! Opponents’ fanbases know which QB’s drive them to drink. If it came down to having to face one QB on a single drive for all of the marbles, which QB would you least like to face? Top of my ranking would be Russell Carrington Wilson. Even without the weapons of the other guys I would trust him more than any to get it done. Aaron Rodgers would be second. Tom Brady third. Matt Ryan fourth. Sorry folks, but Mahomes doesn’t scare me the way those other dudes do. All things held equal (same weapons, etc.) I’d trust Matt Ryan in that situation before I would trust Mahomes.

What this video doesn't take into account is just how much less Wilson has been working with in terms of offensive gameplan. Lots of people like to downplay his weapons because they don't put up volume stats the way that Michael Thomas and DeAndre Hopkins do. But that's an incomplete argument, because in his entire career, Russell Wilson has finished in the _top-10_ in passing attempts just once. Hell, he's barely top-half this season thus far and he's still _third_ in passing yards. I guarantee you that Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf are not just a return specialist and a fast tight end, and that Seattle's weapons are actually among the most dangerous in all of football, but I digress. But Pete Carroll's insistence on using the running game to set up the pass in a league that abandoned that train of thought back in 2007 has blinded an increasingly film-illiterate fandom into thinking that Wilson is only just now proving his greatness. No, you just weren't watching before. Anyone who witnessed Wilson single-handedly carry Seattle to a 9-7 record despite losing half the LOB to other teams and the other half to career-ending injuries, along with lead running back Chris Carson to a broken leg, all while playing behind an offensive line that was so bad that they started a basketball player at left tackle for the entire back half of the season knows that Russell Wilson is a fusion of Joe Montana and Steve Young that Bill Walsh would have used to decorate all ten of his fingers with rings. Mark my words, when Russell Wilson's career is over, he will statistically be one of the five greatest QBs that ever played, and even that won't tell the whole story. Also, Wilson did not throw four INTs in the 2014 NFCC. Three of those bounced right off of Jermaine Kearse's hands. I'll give you the one that hung up there for Clinton-Dix to go get. But three of those picks were on time and on target, and were in no way Wilson's fault.

@ChrisSnape, Wilson has changed most definitely since he married Ciara! I’m a Hawks fan 4Life, but Russell has become a #DivaQB There’s no way in his early playing days he’d throw his entire offensive linemen under a bus 🚌 On a live, national audience during last year’s Super Bowl! He & Rodgers are clearly jealous of what Brady was able to do his 1st year in Tampa! They both want the same thing as Brady…Yet they won’t take a pay cut❗️When you’re taking up close to 15% of your teams overall salary cap? It clearly makes it harder to sign players and assemble the best roster possible! You can’t have it both ways 👀. What makes Brady the GOAT is simple? He’s been taking pay cuts/ team friendly deals for years now! And that’s why he’s got 7 RINGS❕ '

From an NFL MVP award standpoint, perhaps Russ is underrated. That said, pretty much all analysts and “experts” have Mahomes and Wilson basically as 1 and 1A in terms of the best QBs in the league, with Lamar at #3. Seachickens homers are mad because analysts and experts pick Seattle to lose a lot from week to week. It’s not a knock on Wilson. Seattle simply has the worst O and D lines in the league, and their D has a tendency of making even journeymen QBs look like Peyton Manning against them. I digress. Russ isn’t underrated by any stretch when you ask any expert/analyst who the best QBs in the league are. It’s just that most experts and analysts view Seattle as being too flawed of a team to be true contenders, so the Seahawks as a team often get overlooked and “undervalued”. Although in all fairness, I don’t think they are undervalued. Being a WC team and making early playoff exits isn’t indicative of being true contenders for anything.

he has missed a snap or two... but he has started and played 99 percent of the snaps. he had to run thru some tent a couple seasons ago and missed one there ;) i cant clearly recall any except for pre season and late season blow outs...but those arnt counted as missed in this context of 'for injury"

He's never going to win the MVP because the media is either too hung up on the old guard (Rodgers, Brady, Brees) or too excited by the shiny new things (Mahomes, Jackson, even Kyler Murray). I think he's deserving of it, but the bullshit circular logic of "he doesn't get MVP/1st team all-pro because I don't think he deserves it this year, despite fulfilling every category that we've had before" and "he's not an all-time great because he never had an MVP/first team all-pro" that comes from the same people will keep him from ever getting the recognition that he deserves

You're right, the old guard won't vote for him and the new voters don't think he's flashy enough. I want Russ to continue being the guy that he is. And that one day everyone will see R W as THE winningest QB ever.

Ya and he’s the best. Seattle just doesn’t get its shine like it should don’t know why. Our nba was taken away from us. Almost our football team until Paul Allen came. Super bowl 40 we were robbed by refs and nfl of our first championship. Until LOB and Russ came damn. But nfl still low key hates Seattle lol. Not announcers but like top nfl guys.

Pass yardage is such an overrated stat and Russell Wilson's overall perception gets ruined by it... he simply doesn't have the pass attempts necessary to accumulate yardage like most other QBs in the league... also having the worst offensive line usually ruins QBs but he overcomes it somehow... Finally the biggest thing people dont get about russ if you read stats and only watch highlights is that he IS an incredibly accurate pocket passer, he just usually doesn't get a clean pocket for very long... many see the amazing extending play scrambles and think he does that every play and that's why he gets sacked a lot when in reality many of his sacks happen inside of 2 or 3 secs, some at the snap, its ridiculous how bad his line has been at various times in his career yet he can hang in and trust them when he needs to make plays... If he had a competent, average offensive line he would have far less 3 and outs, less sacks, more pass attempts, and would basically be Aaron Rodgers with more superbowl rings... I also think it has to be said, deep passes for touchdowns, he is probably among the best ever to do it and may be the best with the touch he has on his throws, Aaron Rodgers and pat Maholms are the only active QBs in the same universe as russ and those 3 are just way ahead of everyone I've ever seen except maybe Brett farve

Actually wonder if he might leave Seattle for Belichick in the near future. Seattle played hardball with him on 2 straight contract negotiations. This suggests to me that the Seattle front office did not view him the way they should. He's an awesome player and extremely valuable to their franchise. You don't play hardball with a guy like that. Since you don't need an OL or weapons for Russell because of how great he is, I could see Belichick spending his salary cap on Wilson plus all the defensive talent & depth. Elite defense plus Russell propping up a crappy offense. Elite coaching. Win big!
