I know from the past that Hannan is a good debater, but that's about it. He is able to change his opinion by 180° within a month just to win the argument of current debates and change his opinion again a year later. In my opinion, sanctions have always worked. In the case of Russia, sanctions that began in 2014 have limited Russia's ability to arm itself. Because at that time, Russia was planning a massive modernization of its armed forces. Then it had to reduce it, because the sanctions limited its financial and technological possibilities. That's why Russia now uses T72 tanks in combat and not modern tanks. Thanks to the sanctions.

A stimulating debate! For me, the highlight is in the last 5 mins about how a senior group of FSB officers got 'fired' as they had locked themselves into a no win situation in the case of Putin implementing an invasion of Ukraine by eating all the money meant to suborn key Ukrainian officials and thus they were forced to tell the 'lesser evil' to their boss when he did what they thought he would never do ..... So they had to say that all was ready to go ahead! Believable! Poetic justice!

We just have to wait and pressure the pig stye in the Kreml a little longer. Then there eventually break out real mayhem by subordinates cutting corners and official leaders making irrepable mistakes by making enemies within the state blaming their subordinates. These people are always sacrificing their own.The Akilles heal of any autocratic state. Daniel Hannan said that the Kreml totally underestimated the joint reaction of the ´pleasure seeking hedonistic west´ and that would put the final nail in Putlers coffin and plans . How is he getting out of this one ?

The first guest says sanctions are for punishment and deterrence. He leaves an obvious 3rd possibility which is impeding rearmament! Due to sanctions, Russia cannot replenish its stocks of high tech weapons which are heavily dependent on optics and semiconductors which Russia and it's allies China, N. Korea, and Iran cannot produce. Russia is unable to acquire or produce modern drones, so they have resorted to buying low quality Iranian drones. These drones fly low and just over 100 miles per hour. For an anti-aircraft gun crew, these drones fly at the speed of a WWI Sopwith Camel making them nearly useless. Here are a couple of other examples: Russia's depleted missile stocks are forcing it to use S300 anti-aircraft missiles to hit land targets. Russia inability to build tanks has forced it to pull 1960s vintage T-62 tanks out of storage.

I'm amused by the respect these two showed for each other, and suspect it's because they are British. Browder made a comment thanking Hannan for the name, 'Galtieri Principle', of an effect he had previously noticed. And Hannan flashed his eyebrows and smiled when Browder mentioned that markets always reach equilibriums. I doubt that similar could ever happen on an American TV neywork.

Somebody explain to me, an engineer with nearly 50 years of experience in manufacturing and technology in many industries how Russia can maintain an industrial economy if the present sanctions remain in place and are enforced. How will the Russians maintain, repair, and replace machines that are at the core of an industrial economy? They don't have access to parts or the technical expertise they previously relied on outsiders to provide. How will you maintain or repair something as simple as an automobile when it no longer operates. The days when backyard mechanics could make most repairs themselves especially if they had access to a machine shop are long past. They all rely on among other things complex computer modules specific to each model. Multiply that problem by tens of millions of machines of all kinds all over Russia.

I've been a fan of Hannan for about a decade now, but I think he has a weakness of expressing too much certainty which can be troubling. One seldom hears him couch anything in relative terms. That may be innocuous when debating some issues, but when debating sanctions against Russia, I think it's ill-advised for him to be so adamant.

Sanctions so far have managed to slash Russia's exports of gas but don't really start for oil for another month. Also, progress on the battlefield will slow down over winter but that gives Russia several months to bring recently conscripted troops to the from lines and have them prepare defensive lines.

Great debate! However, on one side I've noticed Mr. Browder's argument less convincing because it seems to me is rather emotionally charged because of what happened to his friend and therefore, it sounds to me more like a "revenge" approach rather than logical argument. On the other hand, Mr. Hannan's argument is way more realistic and I totally agree with him when he said two things: 1) sanctions never worked in the past imposed to other countries Iran, Iraq, Libya, Cuba etc. and 2) the people somewhere up in Kaliningrad or anywhere lese for that matter, they could care less if McDonalds leaves the country, Russia. And to add, personally, I don't believe you could threaten or impose any sanctions to someone that has something that you don't have, or you don't have enough of it and you desperately need it and which you can not find or replace it with something else either permanently or just for the time being. The current European as well as the global energy issues its the proof of just that, the cost of energy, on EU and in general the citizens globally as well as EU and global industries. That's my take!

The sanctions are not working and are not going to work no matter how much they are upped. First of all, most of the non-Western world is refusing to participate in the sanctions and will continue to do so, and that includes some major powers like China, India, and others. Russia has the self-sufficiency in resources to withstand the sanctions, and continues to do business with the so-called Global South to mutual economic benefit -- the ruble has been increasing rather than decreasing in value since the sanctions were imposed. All the while these sanctions are seriously damaging the very countries that have imposed them -- Europe most of all, but also the US and a (few) other allies that have signed on to them.
