Russia denies it is planning an invasion, but it has seized Ukrainian territory before and it has an estimated 100,000 troops deployed near its borders. Please subscribe HERE bit.ly/1rbfUog
Tension is ratcheting up between President Putin and members of Nato over the threat of an invasion into Ukraine.
The Secretary General of Nato says the risk of conflict between Russia and Ukraine is real. Vladimir Putin continues to build up troops and weapons, but insists Russia will not invade.
The US’s top diplomat, Antony Blinken, is in Europe vowing relentless diplomacy to stop Russian aggression and is heading to Geneva to meet the Russian foreign minister.
What’s Putin’s next move?
Newsnight’s diplomatic editor Mark Urban reports. Kirsty Wark is joined by Fiona Hill, former Russia director of the White House’s National Security Council and Tobias Ellwood, Conservative MP and chair of the defence select committee.

This is all a storm in the tea cup. The US knows very well if and when Russia will invade. The Ukraine has been pummeling it's Russian enclaves with artillery every day for the past 7 years now, with tens killed in the enclaves every month. It has now concentrated more than a hundred thousand troops on the border with the enclaves. The Russians will 'invade' if the Ukrainians are given a pass to attack by the US. If not, they know very well they won't. The trouble is that NATO will only provide ammunition, so if the Russians win, the Kiev regime will crumble, and that will be a loss of a key asset. The 'news' is actually aimed at the Russian oligarchy in the west, to make them blink. These people in high position in Russia virtually live in the west, have assets and families there. Sanctions will primarily strike that. So this news is an attempt to neutralize the Russian army, to allow the Ukrainians freedom of movement.

The true enemy could just as easily be cowardice. In a nuclear world, the nuclear option is OFF the table. Engaging in a Nuclear war would not only end Putin's reign (because it would be EASILY the cause that makes people revolt against him) but it would also kill many people which neither side would be able to stomach. Furthermore, in a nuclear war, what that means about war is that each "war" or military engagement with other nuclear powers becomes a game of "Chicken". That is, neither side wants to use the nuclear option AT ALL COSTS and so instead, engage in a number of small nudges over and over and over to gradually pincer their way to their end goal or to make it more feasible so that by the time they have achieved it, it isn't as big of an offensive military move that seems astounding. This is Russia's plan it seems...for years now they have poked and prodded and tested the waters and, likely with this case as well, they won't just invade, no, but they will create an opportunity likely that excuses small incursions. Something like "Oh well, we were shot at by a rocket from this town, so we had to invade to check out the cause and will stay here until we are sure the threat is gone". And then the issue will repeat itself until suddenly, Russian forces are stationed in Ukraine under the pretense of "Well we got shot at from within our own borders so we have a right to self defense". Russia will not be sending 100,000 troops in Ukraine all at once. It will be bitesized excuses that necessitate some form of occupation until they more or less annex mile after mile of land. This is ONLY of course if this is even their aim to invade.

You absolute dimwit. You clearly don't know the Yugoslav civil war history AT ALL. By the time NATO had used airstrikes against Serbia, Serbia had been bombarding Sarajevo from the hilltops for months and months and not listening to negotiations. It was NOT NATO "aggression" AT ALL. It was defending Croatia, Bosnia and Slovenia from being forced into a political alliance that they no longer desired to be part of and so each declared independence. It's just that, because Slovenia did not share borders with Serbia and because Croatia was in the way with a pretty comparable military to Serbia, Serbia was only really able to be militarily effective against Bosnia, since it is a VERY small country whose towns and and cities are surrounded on all sides by mountains or hilltops which were easy to position military forces on and fire down into the towns/cities. Serbia started that war, and NATO ended it. Period. There was no NATO aggression there. Get educated.

There was not reason to stop trading with them either. Changes in political or economic variables can create new incentives which justify actions that previously were less desirable. It would be easy. It might take some time to manufacture the shipping equipment like boats and planes, but the US could easily supply Western Europe with natural gas or oil.

At least Chamberlain was thrown out when his attempts at peace failed and Britain fought on alone and that was 80 years ago. The US signed a peace agreement with the Taliban and ended up fleeing in humiliation. The US completely underestimated the Taliban and when asked if Kabul would resemble Saigon Biden said, "The Taliban is not the North Vietnamese army. They're not remotely comparable in terms of capability. There's going to be no circumstance where you see people lifted off the roof of an Embassy of the United States from Afghanistan.” America is so weakened on the world stage this invasion was inevitable. Germany needs to grow up and take its true place in the world. Its actions of 75 plus years ago were unforgivable, but it has paid its dues and served its penance and now it is time for it to get up off its knees. Putin is playing on German angst of its actions in the Soviet Union during WW2, but what happened has happened and can not be undone and now it is time for Germany to move on and act like a mature country with the 4th biggest economy in the world, which it has. Russia has a powerful military, but has nothing else of any significance at a world level and the reality is that Germany no longer owes Russia anything and should start to act accordingly.

This is EXACTLY what I've been thinking. I'm 28, but throughout my short amount of time on this Earth and the countless documentaries I've watched, Germany lost their backbone after WW2. They are the most powerful country in Europe, but act like they are everyone else's little brother. So much softness and indecision when, I would argue morally they have their hearts in the right place and are probably one of the most respectable European nations these days as far as self-awareness. But too much self-awareness turns into self-pity. Germany MUST STRONGLY back Ukraine and then this whole threat of war would be over. It would then turn into disputes battled out in the court room and in business offices rather than in towns and fields. Can you imagine the confidence it would bring to have German tanks and artillery stationed in Ukraine? Russia wouldn't touch that with a 1000 mile long pole.

I too pray for the people of Ukraine, and even the people of Russia. Because it's the little guy that suffers when old/corrupt politicians start a war. The elites beat their chest, but the young soldiers do the actual fighting and dying. There are no minor casualties and little grief from the loss of loved ones. Putin is obsessed with controlling Ukraine. An invasion is not his 1st choice. He is planning a coup. Russia is preparing for a coup attempt against Ukraine. That is his preference. They already have operatives there with some traitors inside Ukraine's parliament, and Poroshenko has just showed up in Ukraine again. Poroshenko had been living in Russia and funding Pro-Russian separatists to kill Ukrainians. Putin is going to try to install Poroshenko as a puppet President of Ukraine. If that fails, then he will invade. Ukraine and allies had better be prepared. President Zelensky had better pull all of his counter-intelligence resources together in order meet Russia's aggressive covert and cyber operations with a swift response and sniff out the traitors. Friends of Ukraine are ready to stand with Ukraine in support of the people of Ukraine against all hostilities.

The next thing in the coming days , if not hours , is your typical “incident “, which will execute the invasion. Now is this an incident ala Czechoslovakia March 1939, which was met with inaction or Poland 1939 which started a world war. The optimum time for an attack is next weekend with a full moon and a still frozen ground, ideal for tanks.

Anyone remember James Bakers promise to Gorbachev , that Nato would not advance to the east. I.E.-Turning to German unification, Baker assures Gorbachev that “neither the president nor I intend to extract any unilateral advantages from the processes that are taking place,” and that the Americans understand the importance for the USSR and Europe of guarantees that “not an inch of NATO’s present military jurisdiction will spread in an eastern direction.” Baker argues in favor of the Two-Plus-Four talks using the same assurance: “We believe that consultations and discussions within the framework of the ‘two+four’ mechanism should guarantee that Germany’s unification will not lead to NATO’s military organization spreading to the east.” Gorbachev responds by quoting Polish President Wojciech Jaruzelski: “that the presence of American and Soviet troops in Europe is an element of stability.”

We are 30 years plus since the end of the cold war. With multiple changes of government since. You can't expect anyone to seriously uphold a gentleman's agreement from that long ago. Especially when we are talking about sovereign nation states that are free to choose who they associate with or do alliances with. To deny them the ability to pick and choose who they do diplomacy with or who they align with is to basically make them puppet states.

USSR ceased to exist. Russia, although inherited much of its territory and assets, is a very different and completely antagonistic to it country. There’s no need for Russia’s concerns. Russia, being an oligarchic capitalist state will never take steps to export a socialist revolution to the west and the west has no need to compete with Russia, a declining power.

Would the US accept other countries putting missiles in Cuba,Venezuela or Mexico or anywhere near the US border? Has the US broken a NATO promise ‘not expand into Eastern Europe’, a deal made during the 1990 negotiations between the West and the Soviet Union over German unification? The US has led NATO to engage in five rounds of eastward expansion over the last three decades. The US won’t start a war with Russia or China, but it hopes to maintain a certain degree of tension and chaos in the surrounding areas of Russia/China. Hasn’t it kept creating the "China threat theory" and "Russia threat theory" and at the same time, tries to pit other countries up against the so-called ‘enemy’ to force Russia and China to retreat from their core interests and rise? This is how absurd the US and G7 position are don't practise the democracy, human rights and free trade they preach.
