Is RWBY Volume 6 really the worst volume?

Well, hopefully I can find some kind of answer because my opinion of Volume 6 has tossed around a lot.
For those who think I'm blindly hating, while it's true that here I will focus on the negatives it's purely because the majority of people ignore them while only addressing the positives.

@@apophis7712 I´ve watched Shane´s letter, apparently Cinder even as a maiden wasnt supposed to be so OP as they made her be ever since Vol 3, but Monty had the maiden idea in his mind, so we´ll never know exactly how far he planned most of the plot, but it was clear that the World building outside the main cities and Menagerie wasnt well thought out by neither Monty or M&K.

I don't consider RWBY an anime. It's not even a question of quality, but classification. RWBY doesn't feel like an anime, it feels like a 3D cartoon with an anime style slapped on it for no reason.

It's not the worse volume, but it's the one where I finally just gave up. I liked RWBY when it was just dumb fun. Also 6 volumes and Ren has yet to do anything cool on his own.

Brandon Ontama Of course it was, thereby negating the fact that Ren avenged his whole family and himself for all the nightmares he got from this monster for years on end. The fight may not have been outstanding, but it was high on stakes, and it developed Rens and Nora’s character a lot.

Volume 6 is a weird one. It starts pretty strong. Oscar fighting Ozpin so that the protagonists use the lamp to ask for some much needed context was good. Maria is also great, and the arc with The Apathy is fantastic. It all just falls apart when they get to Argus. I mean, I have some issues with the very beginning of the volume, but to rank it on an arc by arc basis, everything before Argus is pretty good. Everything after is just bad. Yang and Blake never resolve their issues before getting together, Jaune has a confusing encounter with (probably) Pyrrha's mother, who disappears, and the entire finale just doesn't make sense, and I would have had it completely rewritten if that was what the first draft looked like. The rest is just bumming around Argus. And normally, I'd say characters need some room to breathe, but this is a show where not a whole lot happens to begin with. So taking multiple episodes of nothing happening and "We are lost woe is me!" is just annoying. And then, punctuate it with the stupid mech fight, and the stupid grimm fight, and the stupid Adam fight.... and you have probably one of the worst finales I've ever seen.

Nearly the same here, I just swap 4 and 5 around. After volume 3, volume 4 being what it was and being so keen for it, just made it a complete disappointment (particularly since the parts of RWBY that I liked, the animation style, light-heartedness, and fight choreography, died with volume 3). The plot isn't particularly compelling, and character moments with great potential, which were the main focus on volume 4, were butchered anyway.

@@munkleson8882 I disagree while the Vol 4 changes were a insult to Monty´s vision, the audience was promised better plot in return for it, consideering the ending of Vol 3, developping the plot and Worldbuilding should take priority over the fight choreography until the Haven arc could start properly with the whole gang, thing is, they butchered the world building and gave us multiple retcons and worse plot, while sabotaging the fight choreography, which still entered in eff by Vol 5 where we were supposed to get the good fights and RT employees should´ve been used to the new engine, this is why, Vol 4 usually gets away with more crap than Vol 5 by context.

@@sebas8225 I don't think the fight choreography taking a back seat to world building and plot is a bad thing at all. I would completely agree with it, were the plot and storytelling style actually good. Unfortunately, as I mentioned, the plot wasn't anything extraordinary by any means, and the only character arc I was interested in was Yang's (which the later volumes have completely fucked up). The only reason I was pointing out the worse fight choreography is because I was led to believe that Monty didn't really work much on volume 3 before he sadly passed away. While it wasn't as good as previous seasons, the fights for the most part there were miles ahead of volume 4's and actually quite fun to watch still. If it was the same team that did volumes 3 and 4, they took a hell of a step down. I don't think I clarified myself clearly in my original comment (in that the plot which was the substitute for everything ended up being not worth it), but if anything, I think we're probably in complete agreement.

To be completely honest, I'd rank it like this: 3 > 8..? > 2 > 6 > 4 > 1 > 7 > 5 The first start of RWBY wasn't ever that good writing wise, it's just the fighting choreography. Although, some of the characters became less enjoyable over time, like Blake and Yang. One of the only reasons why volume 3 is up there, is because of the incredible writing on the last few episodes. If volume 6 could've stayed good for the last 4 episodes, it would've been one of if not the best volume in RWBY. Volume 8 has a chance to do that after volume 7 was pretty boring, and outright terrible on one of the episodes. Volume 8 is having a volume 6 type situation, where the episodes in the start are actually pretty good, but they can easily ruin it. Volumes 1-2 were basically test volumes, great fight animations, but the story was still lacking a bit.

Just so I don't forget later: I think the silver eyes hurt Cinder because of whatever that thing is she used to steal the maiden's powers. As long as Salem lives they would be needed and their lives meant something. The "this is all for nothing... WAAAAAH" scene and premise for volume 6 was lame.* I agree with your review. The power creep has made the show threat-less. Someone in charge pulled the Mary Sue on the whole team, Ruby dominant, where they just win everything are always right and other characters are just there to show how right they are all the time. This is so opposite to the original arc where the characters were amazing fighters yet had a lot to learn. That's necessary in a power fantasy show, that the protagonists still need help. Usually in the form of wisdom, direction, and often character itself. The teachers had that role but now they are retconning that to the teachers and all adults are idiots and cowards and just other embarrassing things the kids take care of. I really did not like the Ozpin reveal. It was the start of this "let's say the good guy was actually bad and get everyone mad at him..." trope that comic books love (ahem... Professor Xavier). It would have been acceptable if it made more sense. I still would not have liked it, but now I did not like it and it did not make sense. 1) Raven told Qrow for 3 volumes they couldn't beat Salem. He still thought it was necessary to resist. Now some genie says "You can't" (more on that later) and he's barrel shot into depression and wasted his life? Lame... 2) I don't feel like rewatching it but I'm pretty sure Yang chastised Raven for something to the effect of being a coward because she wouldn't resist Salem in the end of volume 5. Again, now that she finds out Salem can't die... she's betrayed and would have done something else with her time? Really how does that change anything? Nonsense... 3) More directly, Jinn said "YOU CAN'T" to the question "How do 'I' defeat Salem?" So that does not mean that no one can. Nor does it mean that Ozpin cannot with the help of someone else. Especially when the goal was never to defeat Salem but to gather the relics so that the God of Light would return. Seriously, why did no one remember that??? Salem being immortal was the first part of the story, of course she can't die. The point was never to kill her... 4) The point was never to kill Salem! They were huntsmen to protect humanity from Salem. If Salem can't die, then they will always have a job. They did not sign up to kill Salem. They did not even know she existed nor did they ever expect that the Grimm were temporary. The goal was a lifetime as huntsmen to protect humanity. So what was lost? They tried so hard to make Oz the villain but that made no sense. If anything, it justified Oz' reason for not telling them because they were clearly to immature to think clearly. Nothing should have changed. That scene ruined the first act for me, and then it just stayed ruined as it was the linchpin to Qrow's arc and depression making his whole section nonsense. Then they somehow decide to keep going as if it's some great thing when NOTHING happened except them showing that they were all big babies. If they wanted to make that work, the reveal should have been humanity got wiped out and reset every time Oz died. Then it would make sense that they would feel their one life which did not get to repeat would have been wasted if there was no lasting effect. But they saved people at Beacon, at Haven, at Menagerie. They had an effect which is supposedly what heroes live for, even if they die it's what is important to them. So, they lost me right there at the jump this volume. I wanted Oz to remind them of when Professor Ooblech took them on a mission in volume 2 and he asked them all (except Ruby) why they wanted to be huntsmen. That was so key to this arc but it was completely forgotten. Particularly when he asked Blake "How?" and she had no answer. He told them "Remember, girls. This is a job. And you all signed up for it..." And they say there was no narrative power in the early volumes... HA. The most compelling character scenes were all in volume 1-3. There was actual growth and lessons learned. Those days are gone and are missed.

1. Qrow is loyal to Ozpin, so knowing that ozpin hides the fact that he knows Salem can't be defeated, yet lied and gave (false?) hope, do you really wonders why he become so depressed? Hearing from Jinn is not just like hearing from stranger, its like hearing from Ozpin's memory so he believe those instead of Raven's 2. Yeah, Jinn arc is just Raven probably speaking to herself "i told you guys soo many times to not trust Ozpin but whatever" while sipping tea somewhere. 3. Well, no. If the God of Light called when the world of Remnants is as is (Faunus discrimination, Grimm, etc), he will destroy the world. I saw a comment somewhere that said Salem probably wants those relic to actually call the god brothers and try to defeat them, again. 4. I'd argue they will bring up those "if i defeat Salem huntress is useless" dillema later, probably on Vacuo or Days before Final Battle Arc. But for me, do you really wanna keep fighting Grimm, with the off chance that Salem will rampage cities like Beacon (which will probably be one of the reason not to), or just end it?

Volume 6 was great from episode 1-8, but after that, it was fucking horrendous. THE GOOD: I think Ruby had decent enough character development before ep 9 (I'll get to that part later). Certainly more than I expected. I also enjoyed character interactions far more in this volume than I did last volume. I also liked the subplot of not trusting Ozpin, (even though they ruined it in Act 3), and I thought the fight scenes were awesome. Episodes 1-5 were great, episodes 6-8 solid, and overall, despite certain shortcomings in the later episodes of Act 1 and 2, I do think it was above average. Characters were well written and enjoyable for the most part. THE BAD: Episode 9-13 was fucking horrendous. First off, they fucked Ruby's character development, instead of subtle moments where she lost her cool on Qrow or questioned herself and everything around her, she started giving these delusional motivational speeches which were soo fucking hard to listen to. The mech fight was shitty and pointless even though I actually liked Cordoven. Remember that whole subplot about hating Ozpin because he did a bunch of horrible shit for the greater good? Well all the main characters literally do that with the mech fight. Literally rendering a cities defenseless against grimm. If Ruby didn't have silver eyes, the entire city of Argus would have been slaughtered and it would have been all their fault. And LEST I MENTION... Adam. What is there to say? He is a wasted character. Could've been great, but nope, they fucked him. They ran his character through, both figuratively and literally.

No Salem just lied. Cinder doesn't know silver eyes hurt grimm she used the maiden power as an excuse. Ravens proof of that when Ruby used it and only Cinder suffered from her arm, specifically.

For volume 6 the part that i think make it the worst is the story.. Hell if u watch episode 2 and 3 listen to the words that are said from Ozpin to Jen back to Ozpin 3 questions it put a stain on the rest of the story. I can watch a show with bad art work if it has a bad ass story that drive it....but RWBY lost it drive.

I like volume 5 more cuz we get to meet a headmaster, we get to see another maiden, and we get to see what the bad guys overall were up to. All volume 6 had that was important was learning about the relic, learning what salem would do without cinder, and learning oz and salems backstory. Beyond that v6 feels like the characters never left the volume 5 house

In nearly every instance of Ruby acting independently that you've mentioned, Ruby has been taking responsiblity for herself only. Her personality has not changed, but she "matured" in a sense that she's now ready to take responsibility for her entire team and the decisions they're making, which her going along with Jaune's risky plan was supposed to show. The only instance of something like that in the earlier volumes is her talk with Jaune about leadership, but it happened nearly at the very beginning and was just something she wanted to believe in, not tested by actual hardship at that point. Now, it's supported by her actual experience.

the worst problem with Vol 5 was that the undelivered potential, so much build-up for characters like Raven, Adam, Hazel, Ilia, etc... and there´s nothing well delivered.

But what was annoying was illia and sun got sent away because bumblebee, and Adam died for bumblebee when there was no reason for him to be there. If Blake and yang just saw Adam visions without ever seeing him, it would help yangs non-existsnt ptsd at least :p

Be full warned I have a MASSIVE transformers bias. That being said Armada is a very slow show and honestly despite my enjoyment of it isn't that great, but the final arc is actually fairly decent. Cybertron is very fun, over the top, and great if you shut off your brain and can even get some emotions out, however it can be too silly at points and reach cringe levels and the animation isn't always the greatest. Also it has a lot of stock footage that eventually gets annoying
