Volume 3 was probably the peak of the series. It had good fights and a good plot. Volumes 1 and 2 had good fights (however unrealistic they were. Like we're talking about first year students fighting like veteran experts. How do you make stronger characters look better than the main cast when this happens?) but lacked any good plot and were cliche and unoriginal. Volumes 4 and 5 branched out and a had a cool and interesting plot but lacked the well choreographed fight scenes earlier volumes had

While I will ignore the bad animation for literally anything that wasn't a fight in volume 1(because they had such a small team of animators at the start), everything else was either mediocre or terrible. The dialogue was cheesy and pretty cringey at times. The plot got stuck in a slice of life loop that skipped around without an actual goal or path to follow. A lot of it felt forced and the overall quality felt like you were watching some sort of fan project more than anything. Volume 2 generally improved over most of the issues of volume 1. However, the main problem was the finale. That single episode was probably the worst finale in the entire series. The episode prior set up a rather intense scene. The train broke a hole right into the city center and grimm were pouring through, ready to destroy everything. Things were about to go down, except, they didn't. All traces of danger were gone the moment the team of first year huntresses completely obliterated grimm after grimm. It was so ridiculous, the fights themselves looked like one big beat 'em up. Honestly with the way things looked, teams RWBY and JNPR could have very well taken out the whole grimm horde by themselves, it was that stupid. Then sun and neptune enter and ruin the moment with some cheesy one liners (don't get me wrong, I actually found it funny but it really broke the immersion there so badly). The Atlas military swoops in like big brother and takes out the threat within minutes. For the most part after the fight was over, everything is happy ever after and then we see edgelord Adam, who we haven't seen since one of the original trailers mind you, and he finishes it off with another one liner. Team CFVYs fight was pretty cool except, again, it really broke the whole theme previous episodes had set up. The writers made it look like the protagonists literally had to stop the train at all costs or something terrible would happen but no, they fail and the inevitable turns out to not be a big deal at all. It was a complete lackluster and the most anticlimatic finale in RWBY. Some parts were decent, even good, but they were overshadowed by the mediocrity of everything else. Funny enough, both volume 2 and 5s finales were pretty similiar which is intersting since they're both the halfway points of their respective seasons (3 volumes per season). That explains why volumes 1 and 4 felt kind of short in terms of a serious or notable threat. The finales weren't that big of a deal because they were the start of their seasons. Hopefully volume 6 is as good as 3 since they are both season finales.

such a shame qrow was so useless in this volume. like, it was shown in the qrow vs tyrian fight that he was fast and really powerful, but he can't even defeat hazel? and i just assumed that raven and qrow were at least equally powerful, so why did he never get a hit on her?? goddamn

I agree. And like, beyond all of that, it's been shown that Qrow is, 100% _by himself,_ powerful enough to be a thorn in Salem's side. Remember Tyrian's little comment when he reported that he wasn't successful in the acquisition of Ruby about how he poisoned Qrow and he won't be a problem anymore? It's not _just_ that Qrow is strong and fast, it's that Qrow is supposedly supposed to be one of the strongest huntsmen on the planet, if we're to follow the logical conclusion of his infamy in Salem's group, the fact that he was able to hold off Tyrian very well even though Tyrian was able to kill all of Qrow's huntsman contacts around Haven, and the fact back in the flashback segment to how Cinder got her maiden powers, she fled as soon as Qrow showed up. Cinder was scared enough of Qrow that she didn't trust herself, Emerald, and Mercury to be able to beat him in a 3v1 with half-maiden powers on her side after the three of them pretty much effortlessly beat someone with blatantly overpowered magical abilities.

Hazel can block out pain. I'm pretty sure even if Qrow can defeat Tyrian, he wouldn't be able to match up with someone who can block out pain and took forever to defeat.

XStriker 101 Blocking out pain does not make you invincible. You are still getting hurt even if you don't feel it, and overall not feeling pain is a weakness because pain exists to warn you when you are injured or otherwise in danger.

Qrow did more in V4 than he did at all in this Volume. 1. Was the reason RNJR wasn't running into Grimm. 2. Tried to get Raven to co-operate. 3. Saved them all from Tyrian. 4. Fought Tyrian. Sure, he was inactive for the rest of the volume but he had a reason to be. What's his accuse here? If he can take Tyrian, Hazel shouldn't be THAT much harder.

Cinder also was standing right next to an unconscious ruby rose with a fire spear in her hands and attacked weiss. the power scaling's fucked way more than you're making it out to be.

He's never seen that type of Grimm before, hell Pyrrah had to teach Jaune what Aura was, how would he suddenly have in depth knowledge on grimm? Volume 4 and 5 don't take place more than a couple of months after volume 3, you mean to tell me Jaune acquired all of that knowledge while on their way to Mistral?

I still question what happened to the cool ass choreographed fight scenes. In volumes 4 and 5, some offensive/defensive poses looked uncomfortable and raw. The animation and fight scenes seem a little slower. Almost a dozen characters seemed to have lost their development from previous volumes. Some things seemed badly scripted. I could go on, but I won't for the sake of everyone here.

There were still a lot of problems with Poser, the most significant being the inconsistent lighting and coloring (sometimes characters' skin was just pure white on my screen, if I wanted to keep other colors intact). Maya does have mocap, and I'm not sure if they use it. Obviously mocap can't be exclusively used, and it wasn't even used that much in the fights in the first two volumes. UrbanTheMyth and Cake have done videos about what's different about Volumes 4 and 5. Cake goes into the most detail, analyzing each of the "Pillars of Monty," while UrbanTheMyth touches on those things and also describes how RWBY has lost its focus overall (he makes a mistake in citing Shane Newville's open letter, because there is no evidence that any of it is true, but the rest of the video is solid).

I found the whole faunas arc baffling. Aren't they a great kingdom? Why do the leader and his family have no competent guards, to the extent they have to rely on children. Cinder only got into beacon using 2 armies of white fang and Grimm, meanwhile the white fang's B team manage to almost decapitate the faunas leadership. How did one person (tyrion) manage to wipe out ALL of Havens hunters? If that's the case, what was the point of them? Agree on the lack of injuries for the heroes. Given their enemies it should have been a massacre. Most disappointing is the absolute mediocrity of the fights. That's the primary point of interest for RWBY. I understand they lost a key animator, but they shouldn't have continued the series if they couldn't maintain quality.

The Faunus’ home in Menagerie isn’t a kingdom, in the strictest sense of the word. True, Gaira is their leader, but he’s a mayor. Not a king. He does have a personal contingent of guards, but they’re most likely loyalists that followed him after he stepped down as leader of the original White Fang. Those guards are most likely trained but not trained to take extreme risk or kill like Adam’s terrorists. Plus, they were attacked by a group of Adam’s Loyalists who were most likely laying in wait -- acting as a “sleeper” cell -- to cause havoc at his behest. The only reason the Fennec’s didn’t win was because Blake had enough insight to realize that Illa had been used to spring a trap on her and her family. That’s hardly saying that “children” saved the Belladonnas. Tyrion didn’t do it alone. He and Dr. Watts had been fed information on the Mistral/Haven hunter’s missions, movements and locations. Knowing this ahead of time gave both of Salem’s agents a key advantage to systematically take out those huntsmen. This also wasn’t don’t all at once; it was done over a period of time to weaken Mistral’s defenses, thus opening the city up for a future assault by Salem and/or Adam’s White Fang. I’ll also wager that Tyrion and Watts timed their attacks after each huntsmen/huntress had already battled Grimm or Bandits, and were too exhausted or weakened to put up too much of a fight then. I do agree that there wasn’t enough of a consequence to injuries or fights among RWBY or RNGR, but I understand that Yang still fights with PTSD (you can see it still), and Weiss’ injury was an impetus to allow Jeune to unlock his semblance. The fights may be what initially attracts people to the series, but overall the STORY behind the action has to be solid or else it’s just so much nonsense. Take a look at movies like Enter the Dragon, Ip Man, even The Forbidden Kingdom. They sport some great action scenes, but the stories behind them are what holds them together and makes them good films. The writers/producers of RWBY were trying to tell two to three different story threads at once, which were taking place at different, convergent times over the course of the season. It wasn’t the best, but it’s what they had to work with. That said, I hope for Season 6 that they stick to one over-reaching arc for the story, and keep it grounded.

Weiss injury was contrived to show Jaunes semblance yes, it was written poorly. Injuries which are immediately fixed arent consequences - its dragon ball z ressurrection logic, it kills tension. Yangs injury was from a previous fight, it doesn't count. The enemy had two maidens, the white fang, a headmaster and mr angry. The protagonists had children who'd done almost no training since the last arc, prototype ozpin and crow. It should have been a massacre within a minute.The fact that it wasn't was bad writing. I'm not saying story isn't important, but it's still secondary.

I think what irks me the most is when people rate volumes 1 and 2 above something that is objectively better then them. Volumes 1 and 2 were god awful with the only good parts being the damn fights. The story was barely there and the out of fight animation was pretty bad. I don't think people understand that fights do not make a story good. Volume 1 and 2 fights was basically a bunch of fanservice.

I found season 5 enjoyable overall, and I honestly couldn't tell you why. Lancer fight was okay but not great, I liked Yang vs. Bandits, gunchucks were amazing because gunchucks, and I really enjoyed Raven vs. Cinder. But compare that to all the rest of the fights in the season, with no attention paid to people fighting in the background, absolutely no teamwork in fights, nobody doing anything when cinder is literally standing still lining up a shot, Jaune falling and not having his Life Alert with him... And to expand more upon the 'no attention paid to fighting in the background' thing, there were so many instances of that that I was simply incapable of ignoring during the Battle of Haven. Any time they focused on two people fighting and placed other characters in the background, the characters in the background would be practically standing still instead of actually fighting, and I guess RT thought nobody would notice since you're supposed to focus on the foreground. The good parts of season 5's animation are the exception and not the rule.

What I hate about V5 are the fights. Not exactly the choreography. I know Monty's fight choreography is god level, but RT has shown that they could make some above average and fun fight choreography as well. I thought V4's fights were gorgeous, like the RNJR vs geist, the Tyrrian fight and the sea dragon battle. Even though the choreography isn't Monty level, they were at least fun and enjoyable and made me go whoa when Ruby flew Nora to finish the geist, yeah! when Sun's clones threw Blake in the air to deliver a beautiful diving slash, and holy damn when Qrow performed 360 flips above Tyrrian. I thought V5 was going in the right direction as well. The fights in the character shorts were awesome, Weiss vs lancers was flashy, and Yang vs bandits was tolerable. Then came Battle of Haven. I am so pissed at the wasted potential in the fight. We could've seen Emerald spam hallucinations while Ruby flies around slash-shooting, see Weiss deflect Vernal's blades with some magical barriers or glyph-powered strike raids, see Yang and Mercury catapult themselves into each other with punch-blasts and kickblasts. See Cinder shoot fireballs and icicles at Jaune while he shields himself, Hazel go full on Mr. X on Renora and Oscar do some Hogwards magic shit on Lionheart while Qrow's misfortune causes everything to break and Raven spams her portals around the battlefield like Blake does with her clones. But nah, it goes like this: Ruby: Oh my gosh I freaking hate you so much! *runs at Emerald and delivers a lame slash , hits hallucination* Emerald: *kicks Ruby from behind* hah! I have hallucinations, what are you gonna do now? *runs at Ruby, delivering an extremely predictable, easily dodgable strike* Ruby: ouchy! *becomes unconscious* Emerald: Well it looks like blah blah blah blah Weiss and Blake: *comes to her aid* let's do this! Blah blah blah blah blah Checkmate! *cuts to Ozpin and Leo* Leo: but how did you do that? Ozpin: Well, first I blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah Yang: runs to the vault entrance Merc: Em, go after her! Em: *forgets she has chain scythes, tries to tag Yang and fails, stupidity level 99999* Merc: *catches Yang* Tag, you're it! Yang: Well, even though there's no reason for me not to activate my semblance and explode and kick your ass, I can handle my mom and two magically powerful maidens, with just one arm, so you can have it! *releases arm* Weiss: *blocks the entrance* look at my beautiful pet! *lancers unleases attack as scene cuts to Blake and Adam* Adam: Oh my gosh I freaking hate you so much! raaaarrrrrr *runs at Blake with extremely predictable, easily dodgable strike* Blake: *dodges in the direction of the attack* oh my gosh, somehow I wasn't hit! *delivers lame hit* Adam: Oww *runs away* Writers: OK we don't really want to make another fight scene involving Blake, Sun and Adam, so let's just make an excuse by saying Adam wants to lure them away, and that now he'll know what it feels like to run away, even though Adam is easily outnumbered. Blake and Sun: *does exactly what the writers said, cuts to other fight* Ruby: Ok evil dudes, we've got that offscreen fight and you've lost! surrender now! Merc: huhuhu we've lost Unlike how the Haven fight happened, the Belladonna household attack was well-made, enjoyable and properly orchestrated. First we see Blake try to convince Illia to be good, then she jumps at her and Blake deflects her attacks and locks swords with Illia, then the two exchange some sour words then Blake loses her sword and is forced to retreat behind a table. Illia turns off the light and blends in, Blake runs after her sword and exchanges a few words while looking for Illia, then Illia hits her and Blake burns the house, seeing Illia and here we actually see them exchange blows! Not an offscreen fight, just small talk and if there ever is talking they do it while dodging or exchanging blows. Not like the Haven fight where Ruby waits for Emerald to finish her words of taunt before she unleashes a one-time attack like she's a player in an RPG game

Jinx Luna that would never work, 1 Raven could only portal to vernal yang or qrow and what even would be the point since all in same building. As for emerald spamming illusions using your semblance also drains aura, so the more she makes the less it takes to break her aura and injure her, they also can cause fatigue as shown in V3.

Her semblance drains her heavily when she uses it on more than one person. While it still drains her aura when she uses it she doesn't strain herself when using it on one person. She could've used it when fighting Ruby while Ruby could've used her rise petals semblance to escape her chains whenever she gets caught

Jinx Luna but the thing is that it does not appear that she can actively fight and use it at the same time, it takes concentration. Also using many in rapid succession would likely be just as draining as multiple people. Also with Ruby making that decision spur of the moment takes thought, and experience. They are still inexperienced. Also RT is still independent and has a limited budget

Inexperience doesn't really count when you have 16 seasons of red vs blue, and 4 seasons of RWBY before that, you would have thought they would have improved by now. Also, Rooster Teeth is worth $25 million dollars. They also charge people money for First membership, merchandise, and other such things as well. They should not have a budget that is so limited that the big finale of the entire volume is horseshit, and if they do- they need to get help managing it.

Matthew Ferguson I never said RT was inexperienced, I meant Ruby was, with her not transforming into rose petals when she got chained. Also RT has multiple series going on so each show has a budget. The big finale is fine, it's not a large studio production so don't expect it to look like one. By no means is V5 perfect but it gets way more hate than it deserves, all shows will have a bad seasons/volume that is not as good as othrrs

I think the Weiss "I thought you were the quiet one line." Came from the fact of how Blake entered the room by yelling and jumping on Hazel's face. It wasn't a quiet entrance so she was surprised.

I only gave a reason for why the line was there. Never said it worked. If I had to think of a reason why Weiss reacted that way. Probably expected Blake to be more subtle. Doubt it makes the line better though.

Maybe it's because of the fact that she asked if everyone was okay, which isn't normally Blake does so in a fight. During the nevermore fight. Blake only spoke when necessary, when she says the Nevemore is harder than it looks when she tried to hit its wings of steels, only shouted (Yang!) when she saw Yang take a hit from Torchwick's mech, showing concern. During the ABRN fight when Weiss summoned a wall of ice as a prompt for the team attack, Blake wasn't like "Ok let's do this!" instead she just automatically did what she had to. Blake was always the stealthy one. In Black and White when she took Torchwick hostage, she sneaked from behind and held her sword at him, rather than entering the scene yelling and jumping on his face

The volume 5 ending battle was such an immense clusterfuck. Four episodes of characters randomly appearing and disappearing, one on one fights between people who weren't fight in the space of two shots, constant breaking of the 180 rule, inconsistent powers and skill, stupid villains, equally stupid heroes, never ending horrible, stupid, cliched dialogue, the list goes on and on. Fuck Volume 5. Rooster Teeth had better make a pretty fucking stellar show of the first couple episodes of Volume 6 or I'm bouncing as an actual viewer and will just spend my time reading fanfics cause there are some that are leagues better than the show they're based on at this point.

In my opinion, this volume was more uplifting than the last two. This was more story focused and worked on getting the team reunited as well as what's next for our time. I Personally loved this volume. Feels like we finally got over a hill that we've been climbing for forever.

Pretty sure the giant fight in the final few episodes would have been better if they could have modeled different rooms for people to do one on one or duo battles. Them all fighting in the lobby is asking for inconsistencies. Especially if they can't put in the time to figure out what everyone is doing the entire time. The reason people are teleporting and disappearing is that an animator will be in charge of a certain section of a fight or scene. Causing inconsistencies across the board as one person will be given a character to animate in the background and another will not. Whether it would be for time purposes or lack of communication who knows.

Hey, Nemesis. I like your channel and I wanna make one critique. Raven became the maiden because of a relationship with Spring, why does no one get that? And her “being stupid” is more a more surface level assumption than a valid hypothesis because we don’t know the relationship between them and using the “stupid” excuse(which can be said for all of the characters if we are being honest with ourselves and the world around us. You have to have bonded with one to get her powers if you don’t have Cinder’s ability to absorb maiden aura. I don’t know why people insist on downplaying that.

So Oscar, Blake, Sun, Yang, Ruby, Weiss, Ren, Nora and Qrow are headed to Atlas. Where Winter, Ironwood, Whitley and Jacs are. Presumably Hazel, Tyrian (if he's even alive) Watts, Emerald and Mercury will join them. If Ironwood isn't the headmaster of the school (because their school and military are linked) then they'll be another headmaster. Salem and Adam will also pop up presumably. That's 20 characters minimum who have to be included for things to make sense, not including Weiss' mum, Tai, Raven, Kali, Ghira, Illia, Neptune, Sage or Scarlet (If they decide to add at least some of them, which they probably will) or add more characters. Also, that's 29 characters who are alive and could appear in the story. Clearly CRWBY can't write well enough to have a fight scene with 11 people, or develop any of its 4 main characters properly, I am very worried about the next volume.

I’d argue that the reason why rwby got bad was because of the fact that Monty oum died before they could finish the series, like I think he worked on all three season, cause Monty’s animation style was quick and beautiful and choreographed, but 4 and 5 lack that choreography, and quick action, that part where Blake slams that guy with the red sword (I forgot his name) tow the ground, monty would have animated and show the impact that was given like all impactful blows he has done before in his previous works, but no, they quickly jump cut to the guy falling down flipping forward away from Blake instead of slammed down skidding down forward face down.

It's easy to find fault when you binge watch the whole season. I watched it one episode a week. I had a whole different opinion of the season when living in the moment which is what all fans initially do. Monty's vision lives on unless it get's criticized to death.

I don’t think it’s the worst one, but it was definitely bumpy pacing and structure-wise, especially in the second half. It did have some great moments scattered around though. But yeah, V5 was alright, but I was kind of let down overall and a decent chunk of the criticism there was pretty valid. That said, I’ve got a feeling the CRWBY took a lot of that to heart, because I think V6 has been kicking ass so far outside of a few (not many) bits here and there. Fingers crossed they keep the comeback train rolling!

my Idea for doing a good fight scene, animate all characters on a floor map then set up the camera angles. this will allow you to NOT have a character like Crow doing nothing the whole fight, and prevent random character disappearance. Although it would be a lot of effort to do this and not see most of it. it would make it flow 1000x better than the "climactic fight" at the end of the volume. You set up an angle for one fight, and in the background another 2 fights are going on.
