Many have written off Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language, whereas others portray it as the panacea for everything. In this talk, Dr Sampadanada Mishra, a Sanskrit Scholar answers the question whether Sanskrit language is still relevant. His research based arguments compels one to re look at Sanskrit in a completely new light. From launching the 24-hour Sanskrit Radio Divyavani, to founding the Samskrita Bala-Sahitya Parishad to propagate children’s literature in Sanskrit, Dr Sampadananda Mishra lives and breathes Sanskrit. As Director of Sri Aurobindo Foundation for Indian Culture, his project Sanskrit and Speech Pathology aims to create a remedial training programme based on Sanskrit sounds to help people with speech-related disorders. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

With due respect the correct expression is Vasaudhaiva Kutumbakam. Not Vasudeva. Vasudha in Sanskrit means the earth and Vasudha+aiva =vasudhaiva, it is a sandhi, a grammatical form of combining two wards meaning the earth = vasudha and aiva= itself meaning therefore is "the earth itself is my family".

Also makes me wonder how can a nation be so blind to completely sideline such a treasure of our civilization and put it in the league of optional third languages in schools. We need more people like you to revive Sanskrit to it’s full glory and hopefully one day we won’t be debating whether India has a national language or not.

If we have to find the Indian word for English names of things we use these words. Tamil creates its own words and don't use Sanskrit words but some spiritual and religious vocabulary of Tamil is made of Sanskrit. Urdu uses Persian words for this. @@ravi-gx2qc2qz4r That's simply not true. Most words in Indic languages come from Sanskrit, so at least 80% of it is understandable; only the grammatical suffixes/prefixes and conjugation would have to be understood. And you're saying it as if everyone in India understands English, for example, but it's only like 5% (at best) that understand it fully. And even fewer can speak it properly (probably like 1%). Most people who claim to "speak/understand English" merely understand a few words here and there; their grammar has _lot_ of room for improvement. The Sanskrit situation would be no different, except the comprehension would be much higher because they wouldn't have to learn an entirely new vocabulary while learning a new grammar.

After watching this video, I wanted to hoot Sanskrit closer, try to learn it,because as it turned out it is not so difficult. The English language we are currently studying has some similarities to Sanskrit. Another interesting thing is that each word has up to 2000 meanings (for example, the word Water). It was also very interesting to hear that Sanskrit words consist of syllables. I believe that we need to continue to study ancient languages, because they are the ancestors of our modern languages.

WOW such a beautiful language and still we are not taught in our schools. Many schools in UK teach Sanskrit but not in India. Hindi songs are are full of Urdu words. When we have such a scientific language why can't we use Sanskrit words instead of Urdu words in Hindi? Sanskrit should be made compulsory everywhere in India.

Learning Sanskrit after 6th is of no use because we don't have interest at later age and find it hard. Sanskrit should be taught from 1 to 8th compulsory instead of 6 to 8. Learning Sanskrit at early age improves the toungue as Sanskrit is one of the most tongue twisting language. Vocabulary of Sanskrit helps to understand other Indian languages because Sanskrit words are used in many Indian languages.

Actually Hindi songs are lack of romance without Urdu words because Urdu shayari is very romantic that's why it is used in Hindi songs but that doesn't mean that Sanskrit words are not capable of poetry. But Hindi conversation, dialogues etc.. must be in Sanskrit words because Sanskrit words make the Hindi conversation and dialogue amazing and sweet but Bollywood uses Urdu on the name of Hindi and spoil the Hindi language just for commercial purposes.

pranay tayde just to correct you, more than 60% of the vocabulary in Kannada is derived from Sanskrit. You should do some research. But I agree that most of the languages in India are very similar to Sanskrit, and every individual feels their mother tongue to be the most relevant. Sanskrit is the solution to most problems in India. Sanskrit is unity. Hindi is restricting people and grouping people based on their religion.

This is superficial knowledge. The so called high class society replaced too many Kannada words with Sanskrit words. There is an actual authentic Kannada word which fell out of usage over the years in assumed upper class society. If you interact with real people of the land you will know that. Also to remember Kannada is one of the few languages to have its own script for thousands of years. Sanskrit and Sanskrit derived languages do not have that. We have to understand points from both sides of the aisle before considering ourselves smart.

Each Sanskrit sound corresponds to a chakra in your body. These Sanskrit sounds were discovered by the rishis of Ancient India. The rishis of Ancient India discovered that every thought originates in sound and that the sound produces a geometric construct that manifests itself into a form of light. Unlike every other language, the sounds of the Sanskrit language are not arbitrary. The Sanskrit language was never created, but was instead discovered. Sanskrit is eternal.
