The eating the soul of humans through their anus is the actual folklore of the Kappa though, same with them eating cucumbers and liking sumo wrestling. But besides that, this shit is weird and hilarious, and I love it xD

I feel like it's really easy to get caught up in the weeds of the weirdness of these shows and get really confused by how "obtuse" everything is, but I recommend just riding that wave of weirdness and honestly don't think about it too hard. I might be in the minority here, but I genuinely think you don't need to understand every bit of imagery in these shows in order to enjoy yourself. The real best thing about Ikuhara's work to me, is the themes of his shows and how he addresses them. They're themes that I don't see in a lot of anime, and if I do see them they're not handled nearly as sympathetically or in as interesting a way. Child abuse, LGBT themes, the crush of society on those it deems outcasts, THAT'S why I'm here. You ride that wave of weirdness until it crashes into a wall of emotion. The weirdness to me is almost more comic relief, that if you want to dig really hard into yeah you'll find some hidden symbolism that makes you enjoy the show more. But you don't NEED to.

Same with Utena. The repressed emotions, the symbolic meaning behind the sword fights and even of her constantly doing calisthenics while taking to the (obviously gay) principal as (as I see it) a way to show how detached she is of his sense of order and how she's trying to stretch beyond the boundaries imposed on her are the gold of that show for me. That and the amazing use of architecture to impart meaning. The cityscape in Utena is a character of and unto itself. As for Sarazanmi, all the butt-related stuff (including lots of fart jokes for a single episode) taken from actual folklore may explain why it looks so weird for Western audiences, but the major points are what you mentioned. Ikuhara's work stands out thanks to how complex is its use of subtext when related to real life issues in Japanese culture, and that is amazing.
@stephenvonbehren3806

My general take on Ikuraha's storycrafting is that he's not crafting a story. He's crafting a vibe. The logic frequently doesn't track from beat to beat, but the emotions almost always do. It certainly means there's more places to get pulled out of the experience by something that doesn't make sense. But when the emotional moments hit, that's what sticks with an audience the longest. Utena is a confusing jumble. But it's an unforgettable, empowering jumble. I see potential for Sarazanmai to be as empowering for denizens of the age of digital memory. Or maybe it's a horror story. Or maybe it's just Mad Libs. We'll find out.

I think it's the same for a lot of surrealism, like Dali or David Lynch (who people like to compare Ikuhara to). Dali admitted many times that he liked weird imagery in general and he wasn't trying to load symbolism into everything. You can see themes and metaphors in surrealist stuff (like Eraserhead being about the fear of parenthood), but you're doing it wrong if you try and analyze everything in Eraserhead looking for a deeper meaning.

Wow! the part of you comment about "child abuse" and "lgbt" is so strong in the chapter 2 ... I mean the story of the kid with black hair and the kiss in the last minutes of the chapter, ohh and the cops too they are coming from a shounen ai manga. I was so disappointed with the animes of this season but when I saw Sarazannmai it was so metaphoric and weird that it was so good, people just sees the "weird" and "creepy" of the anime but they can't see all the truth behind the metaphors , that's why I love this show. Sorry for my bad English
@aguychillin7700
@aguychillin7700 5 жыл бұрын
I usually always focus on the main theme of an anime. For Sarazanmai, it is connections and each character has their own take on it. There are many sub themes interlaced with this when you see episode 2 but I came to Sarazanmai because of the PVs where connections were mentioned so much that I learned the Japanese word for connections from it. That is why I am here, to get a feels trip about connections and how important connections are and how they are formed.

The butt thing is based on japanese folklore. That when you are in the water they prey on you and can steal your soul through your butt, because they believed the soul wasin the stomache. Thats real folklore. That shouldnt be the weird thing.
@ShenSeiken
@ShenSeiken 5 жыл бұрын
Right. It's not weird. It's just folklore. It's not weird because this wasn't the idea of Ikuhara or anyone else who was alive. It's old stories told to children about demons attacking their anus if they do dangerous things like play in water. Nothing weird about it. Alright, I'll stop. I don't want to be an assoul.

The butt thing is part of the folklore, but LItterally Everything Else (except for cucumbers) is completely out of no Freaking Where. Also, it's not the soul itself. The Kappa believe that every human has a powerful "Ball" that happens to reside just past the anus and that consuming said "ball" will grant them great power. Just putting that out there.

Utena turning into a car metaphorically makes a lot of sense. The whole thing is about how the world of the show is an illusion, and the characters literally say this. The line that precedes it is literally "a car without a key sets to rust." So Utena is the car, the vehicle to free Anthy from the school, which works well for 2 reasons. 1) Akio in the show would show people to "the End of the World" by driving them outside the school (with cars being literally the symbol associated with that particular arc) and 2) Anthy can't escape without taking the initiative herself, she has the key and Utena is the car. Utena empowers her to leave but Anthy is actually the one that has to do it.

I absolutely love this show. The art and songs are amazingly good and catchy and I love what is slowly being uncovered in the show. I also don't think their rationalizations for working with Keppi are up to interpretation either. 1st they are cursed for breaking his shrine, so he can torment them into helping. 2nd, they are greedy teenagers.. the want free wishes.. and he's stringing them along with the promise that gold plates are possible.

This is just the kind of weirdness that'll start me watching anime again hahaha. I'm a filthy casual that's ready for Fruits Basket reboot but KZbin recommended the 420 feline video and it seems radical in its themes. It's not quite what I expect from Japan and I'm completely down for that. I watched this video to get a better idea of what the show is about and I'm honestly more impressed with Ikuhara than anything haha. I would love to see you feature artists or directors and just talk about their works and what they're known for! When you were talking throughout the video, I figured out another reason why this show peaked my interest. I have a soft spot for Arakawa Under the Bridge and Saranzanmai reminds me of it. They are both weird af and kappa related. The animation was also beautiful but I was constantly questioning wth am I watching? It did have a main plot and if Saranzanmai can hold together its main plot like Arakawa did then I'd be very excited to watch it! Please review episode 2 soon!

I just finished Sarazanmai and I think the message is more clear than in any of his other series. Besides the butt stuff, everything else makes sense the farther you get into the story. The characters' motivations and backstories get revealed slowly. For only having 11 eps it didn't feel rushed either. I really enjoyed it, I hope you can do a full review of it one day!

This is somehow my first Ikuhara show! And to be honest.... I REALLY enjoyed this, it was so damn weird and out there, but also had some other stuff that could be interesting to explore and left me with questions! I seriously can't wait to see where this goes....

YES, PLEASE, ARK, REVIEW UTENA SOMETIME!!! 🤩 It's my second favorite anime of all time and your box set cases have been stitting there mocking me in the background ever since you got your new place! 😆 With that said, I totally understand why you haven't reviewed it yet. I've always said that the impact Utena has on many a person who's seen it is much easier to FEEL than it is to explain. Heck, I've watched Utena the whole way through three times now (just finished making my mom watch it with me recently, in fact) and I STILL can't say I know what everything means! (I almost don't want to know, actually 🤣) But that's what makes the show so fun to watch, rewatch, and talk about; because Ikuhara leaves everything so open to interpretation, there's really no right or wrong way to look at any of it. And also, there's what seem like a million different little details you can pick up on that you didn't before when rewatching it that make you look at certain aspects of the show's plot and characters from a bit of a new perspective every time. That's why I'd personally LOVE to hear your thoughts on Utena in more detail no matter what they are, but if you're not feeling up to the challenge, it's okay - the show is definitely not for everyone, so just knowing that you like it at all is enough for me 😉 Now as for this Sarazanmai, I haven't seen it yet (nor any of Ikuhara's other works after Utena, for that matter) and have been going back and forth in deciding whether or not I'm ready to subject myself to his own special brand of crazy again. But, I will say that after seeing so many people on Twitter (and now, KZbin) flip their lid in shock and awe over how WEIRD it apparently is, all I've been thinking to myself is something along the lines of: "Yeah... that sounds about right." 😏

"Good" is always how the individual interpret things. Anyhow the music of Sarazanmai is absolutely amazing and the visuals are soothing... except for the anus part. Butt, some things are not meant to be overthought.

Ikuhara makes avant garde anime. After Sailor Moon and Utena he got more freedom to make whatever he wanted. I did not like Yuri Kuma Arashi, but this looks good so far. I like that he is playing with male main character this time!

You know, I'm waiting for the day that someone from the production team of one of Ikuhara's shows stands up and tells us: "Literally, he just did what he wanted. There's no symbolism to it. You've all been fooled. Like, there's some. But those are surface-level. Those are the ones you can see. Otherwise, no. He fooled us all."

I feel Arkada's sentiment so hard. The parts of Sailor Moon that Ikuhara contributed are some of my favorite in the series (Several episodes as well as the first movie) and Utena has a very special place in my heart even though the depth of symbolism left me a bit lost at times. Literally none of his other anime have peaked my interest in the slightest. Their concepts alone are to out there. At least even when Utena was weird, it was still grounded enough to sorta understand and stay engaged in what was happening. Hell, even the infamous car transformation, as much as it threw me through a loop the first time I saw it AND as much as I honestly hate it as a narritive and creative decision.....I still can comprehend enough of the context to get what things it most likely represents. Seriously though......cars in Utena fill my with rage and that includes Akio's stupid sports car and it's weird adulthood and sex metaphors. The movie was worth it in the end though because the two characters from the original series I hated the most are both dead in the movie. 8D
