my biggest problem with most schools is that they assume that every kid learns in the same way, which is not true. evan, you're definitely a good example of how the school system works for some people, but for others who brains are wired to learn differently, it can be hell. although i do pretty well with standardized tests, others' don't but not because they're stupid. i hate how intelligence is measured on a piece of paper. the american school system especially has a serious problem with screwing over kids with ADHD, ADD, or simply kids who learn differently. my brother, who has ADHD, is one of the smartest people i know, yet he has poor grades. why? he can't focus on tests. and that's not his fault. it's basically rigged for him to be screwed over! i also dislike how school assumes everyone is an extrovert, and if you're not, tries to force you to be an extrovert. there's a TED talk called "the power of introverts" that addresses this issue and explains it very well. i think the school system should work to accommodate for other learning styles, and I believe teachers should be taught to not solely teach for one type of student. the school system helps some to excel and become great leaders, but can also destroy confidence and motivation for those who are even slightly different.
@izaco1016
@izaco1016 4 жыл бұрын
"i hate how intelligence is measured on a piece of paper." Tests are used to measure growth and how much you've retained, not flat out IQ. This statement comes from the self-conscious nature of kids thinking they dumb. I can't talk about American school but the main problem with this whole education system debate is that people from America assume their education system defines the education of kids GLOBALLY. It does not. Here in the UK we use a variety of different methods in class to accommodate all learning styles. I've seen that introvert video, and the comment section is very toxic and anti extrovert. You cannot come into class and not say a single word or even contribute to the discussion, and then get annoyed when the teacher is concerned. It doesn't force you to become an extrovert (at least not in my school), and in the cases where it kind of does, that's because we live in an extroverted society and school is preparing you to be an adult and enter into said society. You can't use the excuse of your personality. Anyway, this is 2 years old and im just ranting at this point. In conclusion, I respectfully disagree with you (though I wouldn't know much about the american school system so you'd be more educated on it than I would, budum tsk)

Katie Kemp it’s not even just people with learning disabilities though, there are so many different learning styles, some people learn better independently some people find it really difficult when someone is just talking at them some people can’t learn by just doing practical work and there are so many different learning styles which I think most schools acknowledge but then there is still only one form of testing which again isn’t very constructive or representative of a persons knowledge. When I was preparing to do my GCSEs and we where doing more and more class tests there was more and more pressure, the tests where ment to be to find out where the gaps in your knowledge are to help you get better for the actual exams so you can get the grades you deserve but it just turns into a representative of what you know and ‘how smart you are’ which is ridiculous because you may not be smart in certain areas but you may be great at other things, but because of one or multiple bad tests you are labelled as being stupid or dumb and that then becomes a self for filling prophecy of your entire identity

@Katie Kemp not true really, i myself am a kinesthetic learner during my time at school in the UK i got solid A* during science lessons due to it being hands on and practical, when it came to sitting the exams i only got Cs because exams and not something i can do it doesnt fit how i learn or retain infomation, the UK school system is fucking dreadful it teaches one type of person only and those who dont fit that are forced to be left behind when i went to college and university for my science degrees are aced them easily as it was all graded on practical work non of it was test based, exams dont prove how smart you are, all exams do is show you who has good memory

Regarding learning styles, there were plenty of things which came up in my degree for which the only resources available on the topic were academic papers. Sometimes the only resource available to you is uncommented code etc. If you're lucky, you might find a video series, but that becomes less and less common the more in-depth you go in a field of study. I think that part of a measure of intelligence is an ability to adapt to the resources available to you, because there are many times where you can't choose the resources from which you must learn because those are the only ones which exist. I think school should prepare people for this, by providing a mix of learning styles. The more that you can work with, the better.

Bella Pearce I get that it can be very overwhelming, specially being a teenager when you're expected to be and do so much and at the same time is treated like a child. But try to keep in mind that, in the future, all of the effort will be worth it, depending on the career you want. Also, considering all of the hard work you must be doing, giving yourself a break once in a while is very healthy and good for your mind. ^^

We don't learn anymore. We are just made to remember things that we forget right before the exam. It's a waste of energy and life and happiness. All I've known from school is stress, and it is also the source of my depression. We are forced to make decisions on our future with no support when we don't even know who we are. There is no mental health facilities. Teachers are also suffering. I love English, I love music, I love Spanish. But I feel like I'm not learning but just preparing for exams. I love learning, but I hate school. There are times I've even wanted to die. School has done no good for me and there is even scientific evidence that it is mentally and physically damaging. It is outdated. School was made 100 years ago to train children for factories. Times have changed. While the world is moving forward, school is staying the same. Ugh it makes me feel so hopeless. I'm in Britain and I'm in year 10. Please tell me I'm not alone in this.

Nirel Dickens I'm in year 10 in the uk too and I feel the same. Although some teachers are nice and I like some lessons there's so much pressure to do well on exams it really affects me mental health. I've only been back from holidays for five days now and I've already had seven pieces of homework. Some teachers forget we take MULTIPLE subjects, not just theirs.

Tbh it really pisses me off when I realise the school system is an attempt to turn kids into robots that get told info, forget the info, are tested on their ability to remember the info and then immediately forget it after the exam. All my opinions are suppressed at school and although I have no problem with bullies (bc they know I'd give them a piece of my mind), the education system is really destructive on kids. I'd still rather have a debunked school system in the UK than have expensive health care and a shambles of a democracy like the US

my biggest issue with school was, that it shifted the focus from aquiring knowledge and broading your horizon to figuring out how to write what a teacher wants to read for an exam and get good grades?? Now that I'm in university I've realized that it was basically free education and I should've valued it more, but I also understand why I didn't at the time and I think it's sad that many ppl probably feel the same because of the current grading system

So true. I feel like it makes everything so much more limited because you have to learn what is in the curriculum or what could possibly show up in the final exam. You can never really explore a certain topic too deeply because to them (teachers, the education system) if you won't be asked about it in an exam then you ain't gonna get taught about it. It's sad really.

School as an idea is great. But the system at the moment is completely useless. Learning for exams teaches nothing, and doesn’t exactly foster a love of learning or a passion for particular subjects. The best experience I had at school was when I was in the advanced French class - we did our GCSE a year early, and so had a whole year to just learn French, without worrying about exams, before moving on to A-levels. I probably learned more that year than I ever had before, and we had so much fun just learning it, for the sake of getting better at it!

it's not that easy to just ignore or punish a bully. in my most recent situation, teachers didn't believe my friend and i. they said they had no proof she did the things she did, except for my friends' literal breakdown. and she was corrupting the part of school we loved the most, the part we lived for. "just ignore them" to me sounds like "just be happy." it isn't that easy.

I used to really dislike school. But for the entirety of last year I was present for maybe 20% of the time, with a reduced timetable and working from home when I couldn't make it in (teachers email me work), and despite the reason for this being horrible, I am so much less stressed than before. My self-esteem is massively higher, my motivation is higher and I sacrificed maybe 7% of my marks on tests - getting about 85%. I don't exactly know what you can take from that, but I know that I'm a happier person.

Annie l honestly, it's a difficult way of working. I currently have a Latin textbook on my lap, reading a story that will take me an hour to translate, rather than 20 minutes like it used to. Next week I'm going to hospital for 3 weeks, where I'll only be doing schoolwork for 2 hours a day. It's hard. It's a LOT of effort. But, as long as you're ready to work really hard, you know that you can do your maths test in your pyjamas with a cup of tea, and I believe that that's a far nicer way to live.

Jane Lin he is talking about his own experience though and that worked for him. I feel like school has changed a lot more since he and I were in school and the type of school makes a difference too. I lived within a couple of blocks of school so some bullies would literally follow my brother home because it wasn't schools jurisdiction anymore. He lived in a rural area so he could really get away from them. Now the internet is way more common so it's really hard to get away from bully's and schools struggle a lot more figuring out what's in their jurisdiction and what's not.

One of my friends is a teacher and I love the way she handles bullying in her classroom. When she finds out who the bully is, she'll get the class to sit in a circle around the "bully" and each person in the class will say a nice thing about that child. She may have to repeat this a few times but she has noticed that there has been significantly less bullying since she started that method

Speaking of bullying, countless people at my school reported bullying to the school who disregarded it and didn't allow the people to move classes to escape the bullies and refused to help so much so like 3 diff people took their experiences to the local newspaper who posted about it and the school released a statement saying they don't tolerate bullying yet they're yet to do anything against it and often deny the fact there's bullying, sometimes unfortunately even telling the school doesn't help and I bet my school isn't the only school to be like that

I was so much happier home educated, and had such a loving circle of other home educators around me. Same. It's so bad. My friend went on vacation for a few days sophomore year and she got so far behind in all her classes. She couldn't get caught up and got super depressed and anxious. I was already suffering from depression and stress has been a constant factor in my life sense 8th grade so it was really hard on both of us. It's still hard tbh. Last year i had over 40 tardy/absences because I couldn't get out of bed. My teacher called my mom because he thought I had a terminal illness or something.

I was home-schooled (from year 7 onwards) and it is a decision I don’t regret because there is so much less pressure put on you, and when I did my GCSEs, I didn’t need to do any topics that I didn’t want to, and was able to study at my own pace. I found it just more fun learning what you wanted to learn and at a pace that suited me.

Martha Hampton this is pretty much the same for me. In year 9, I loved school. I wanted to see all my friends and I was really enjoying my lessons. I was SO excited to go back in year 10 but after the first day back, I already wanted to stop going. Within the first few weeks I had begun to hate school again+everything basically spiralled downwards from there. I have felt bad for getting an A before (which is utter bullshit wtf) so I know that feeling. Ehh but I guess that's grammar schools for ya !

Evan, I really like your videos but I feel like you might be a little ignorant on bullying. I'm not calling you stupid or mean, i'm just saying I don't know if you've ever really felt the pressure that most kids feel. Even if it's just someone calling you a snitch or talking behind your back, the pressure to fit in is so strong. It's really great that you're so confident and don't care about what people think about you, but that's not the case for a lot of people. Kids will literally threaten you and your reputation an since the whole school will pin you as a snitch and will exclude you, your friends (if you have any) will feel the pressure of hanging out with someone who's seen as a weirdo. Finding friends is hard in itself for people who are not easily approachable or who prefer to be alone. Anyone who is different, no matter who they are, is told they are a freak and a loser. You know what teachers do about this? Jack shit. They think that because its not technically bullying as in physically or verbally, that it doesn't matter. I also disagree with what you said about failing a class. Right now i'm so close to passing, but i'm failing math. My whole life I've been told i was smart and a nerd and i even got into the advanced math class last year, but i'm still failing. Its about a quarter of the way into the year and i'm failing a subject miserably. I'm trying my hardest (studying, taking notes, meeting the teacher, extra credit) but none of it is working. Its not that i'm not trying. its that I don't get it.

I never hated school but I never loved it either. I never had any trouble with bullying or anything other than some mild picking on occasionally. what i struggled with was the work and the stress and the insane pressure that was put on us. from year 7 to 11 I was 'the quiet smart kid who sat at the back silently doing her work and getting good grades relatively easily' so that was fine but when I got into sixth form, oH BOy. suddenly it wasn't easy anymore and the pressure was insane. the work load was ridiculous and I had the all consuming fear that sat in the pit of my stomach all day, every day that I wouldn't get the grades to get into uni. I remember having a complete break down over my art grade because the teacher told me i was going to fail and hysterically sobbing for about an hour until my then boyfriend literally carried me home. turned out that I didn't fail my art course and I just scraped by into uni with my distinction in music. however, i know I could have been spared half the anxiety and stress if the teachers hadn't been telling us since we were literally eleven that grades and school are the only things that actually matter in life, that everything else is a waste of time you should be spending on school and that if you don't get into uni you really might as well just jump off the nearest bridge. that's such a damaging mindset to be putting on kids. it's so fucked when you think about it. they make you believe that literally the only truly important thing in your entire life is school and grades. well that's what i believed for a while anyway. If you're in school now please know that it's not the only thing there is, it's important, granted, but it's not THE most important thing. learning compassion and empathy and how to love yourself are far more important than algebra in my opinion.

I'm very recently started my first year of high school (in America) and here's my feelings: the things I appreciate about school: - learning about the things that interest me and will help me be successful in the future in the the careers I want to pursue - seeing my friends, or the people I actually want to spend time with, and making memories with them (even if I don't see them as much I want) - the structure/schedule that keeps my brain from becoming mushy and mental health somewhat in the healthy range - being pushed to be a better a person and strive for excellence, even in the areas I don't have a passion for things about school that wear me down: - being surrounded by mostly negative energy all day (especially in middle/high school) - having to dedicate chunks of time for subjects you really don't care about in order to succeed in them (for me these classes usually include most math, P.E., and some science classes) - juggling all 50 things in your lap that all seem like the end of the world when you're 14, while also helping others juggle their 50 things School isn't so bad if you focus on being a good person and doing what you need to do to achieve the level and success you want, and if you find a good group of people, but it sure isn't the most ideal situation.

I love learning, the routine of school and general feeling of achieving. The social stuff is good for you too when people are pleasant. However ever since my first year of high school I've felt like an outsider, and bc friendship issues and being treated shittily I got really depressed and anxious. After been picked on by a few teachers too, (mostly male and P.E) I went into this year with no confidence. All year I have had this new issue where I feel like i'm being judged by every teacher, since i'm more sad and quiet, and got picked on previously. I barely know how to look at teachers and not over think what their impression is of me. I hate it so much but I don't know how to get over it. No one else has this issue so it makes me feel crazy. I'm always worried about how I look to peers and teachers so I can hardly concentrate on learning, and I always feel fatigued from depression which makes it even harder to get up in the morning.

We had this one text in Science of Education that talked about how negative it can be to praise your kids. It causes exactly what Evan describes: kids start to see "the smart one"/"the funny one"/"the nice one" as their identity and lose themselves if they fail. They start thinking that their performance equals their worth as a person. I've experienced this all my life and I don't think it will ever really stop. And I can tell you, it's horrible always seeing everything as a competition that threatens your identity. So here's advice: Compliment people, especially kids, if they did well on something because they tried hard. But don't say things like "you did well because you're smart", that can be sooo damaging.

I would try and answer questions but she would shout at anyone who got anything wrong, but then complain that I never tried. I'm in year 9 and my English teacher gives us year 11 reading papers with no help, tell us that they were really easy and that we should be able to do them by now. Two years later I love German because of my teacher. I'm still not the best at the subject, but having an encouraging teacher makes all the difference, in my opinion xx

I have a love hate relationship with school. There are times where I'm so glad I have a routine, a time schedule, being with friends, learning. But there are other times where I can't muster up the energy to get out of bed because I can't handle the stress and pressure the teachers will put on me that day. And it starts to massively affect my mental health. One of the biggest problems I face at my school is that it seems as though they're trying to strip your personality away, and make you the same as everyone else. And I am someone who is so different in many ways, in the way I think, dress, talk, and yes I know everyone is different, but I feel even more different. I go to a different school on Mondays for one of my chosen subjects, and everything is so much chill there, the students are allowed to express themselves, wether it's by dying their hair, piercings, or even expressing sexuality or gender. In my school, it seems heavily suppressed. I'm queer and non-binary, and when I try to express that, it's frowned upon, and I'm always hearing people using gay as a hate word. The teachers don't do anything about it. I've been there for 5years and not once have I heard the issue being talked about. I didn't mean for this to turn into a rant. I'm just an angry child who has feelings

I loved school overall. I always struggled with Maths, and no matter what teacher that taught me, I could never grasp the work. But then I'm year 10, I had this new maths teacher, and I completely loved her, she made the problems easier for me to understand. I loved the way she taught and I got a C in my GCSE. It was one of my favourite moments of school because I realised that, im not actually "bad" at maths, it's just the teacher's way of teaching the problems that I couldn't understand. The thing I didn't like at school was that we weren't allowed to pick all of our favourite subjects for gcse. I chose French, Spanish, Music and Art. But I know a lot of my friends couldn't choose what they wanted because they were mostly "practical" subjects and the teachers forced them to choose other subjects. I'm in college now and I love it. But I do miss school. I miss choir, that was my favourite thing about school :'(

There is no better feeling than moving up from year 11 to sixth form. Everything just seems to change(depending on where you go). I go to a sixth form college at the moment(second year of it) and the teachers are so much better to the point where I can just have a conversation with them. At times they can sometimes feel more like friends than teachers and for me that gives me the motivation to work harder. Without a doubt the single best part of it all, even more so than wearing your own clothes and being allowed to leave the grounds during break times, is that you do only the subjects you choose to do(as long as you've got the important GCSEs at at least a C). I'm doing engineering which is so much more suited to my interests than any subject I did at GCSE and again it just gives me that motivation to get up and work hard because I actually care about the subject itself as well as the grades

Listen, I don't want to overstep my bounds or anything, it's your youtube channel, your world, you're a real Julius Caesar. But I'll tell you how I feel about school: It's a waste of time. A bunch of people running around, bumping into each other; a guy up front says, "two plus two," the people in the back say, "four," then the bell rings and they give you a carton of milk and a piece of paper that says you can go take a dump or something. It's not a place for smart people. And I know that's not a popular opinion, but it's my two cents on the issue.

Evan, we had such similar school experiences. I struggled with not being the smartest in a class after being so for a long time. I'd still go to school for a change of environment, opportunities, excursions, canteen foods, teachers, and the fact it's mandatory time with friends for most of the week.

I graduated university a year early and regret graduating early when I could've double majored or minored in something else that I was passionate about. But I loved my classes and the organizations and the sense of community I had there. My professors and peers made a huge impact in my education as an international studies major. That is definitely a huge deal breaker when it comes to learning. I feel like before university (well in America) we are taught how to pass exams a certain way but once you get to university it gets better and was far from that in my experience. Even though it is stressful and you might have meltdowns and no sleep, I had the best memories. It's a time of exploring, experimenting, and learning about who you are. The most important part for me in succeeding in my education was being with the right people and finding a community that supported one another in a positive way.

For me, college was more stressful because it went much faster and I cared more. To even keep my head above water and learn everything (because I genuinely wanted to) I had to study for HOURS every day. There wasn't much homework, as opposed to high school, but there seemed to be so much more To learn and so much less time to do it in. I think people really exaggerate the need for social skills as an arguing point for public schooling. I've known so many homeschooled people and they're so much mentally healthier than people who went to public school. Granted, a few weren't very motivated and didn't learn nearly as much, but you find that in public school kids too. They're also not as beaten down by tests and all that. I personally think homeschooling is better because you can tailor the teaching to the needs of the child, as opposed to a pre-approved system that's not forgiving and tells you you're stupid if you can't keep up. Then again, I think a lot of people do need the structure of that kind of system TO motivate them. They need the stress and the pressure or they just wouldn't do it at all. But I do think that the emphasis on testing is awful, and tons of homework is very unnecessary for most subjects. One of my favorite college classes was actually Art History. It was never something I had an particular interest in, but the class was nothing but a three hour lecture twice a week, and a very brief 5 question quiz at the start of each class. That's it. If you took decent notes and studied them, you could pass easily. I loved it. No pressure at all. I came to the class excited to learn the new things. We never had to read; the teacher went chapter by chapter through PowerPoint presentations on only the things we'd be tested on. I found it fascinating. I took notes at my own pace and that's all that was needed. It let me become engrossed in what was being presented as opposed to being stressed about all the little dates and details that don't matter in the big picture. It was a very "big picture" kind of class, and it was perfect. Just the way history should be taught, I think. So anyway, my point is that the best way to enjoy school is to find what works for you and to work around that the best you can. The downside is that most young people don't care enough or have the support they need at that age to figure it out. Not much one can do about that though.

What Luke said about an accident not happening in school is the exact opposite of mine, our school gets involved in EVERYTHING, whether online, or during the weekends, it sometimes feels really intrusive, but hearing what Luke said, I do realise it comes from a good place...

idk how i feel about school. bc sometimes you think it's okay, and a safe space. and then a teacher or w/e says to respect everyone's opinions and protects the homophobic/transphobic/racist/sexist kid. or you get told that it's already happened so there's no changing it. and teachers sometimes teach their opinions instead of facts which is dangerous.

I definitely think there is a strong difference between 'school' and 'knowledge'. I've always loved learning and feeling intelligent, but as somebody with severe anxiety, I didn't know what to do with myself at a traditional school. I loved impressing the teachers and having friends, but when I felt so out of place that I cried myself to sleep every night, I knew that there had to be another option. I now am schooling online and love it. The amount of communication and friends that I have are astounding, but I have all the befits of learning without the horror of having a panic attack every day. It's a dream.

I think one of the reasons why school feels/felt so evil to people is because everyone is supposed to learn the same way and at the same speed. Like you have a certain amount of weeks to learn these certain things from these certain books and if you don't, you fail or you get a lower grade. When in reality everyone learns differently. So, people feel inadequate or less than someone else. Of course there's the social aspect, bullying etc, as well but looking at it from a more educational standpoint. I really liked the video once again!! These spill the teas are still some of my favourites.

Is not that is bad *because if it was bad we wouldn't be going* but what I didn't like is because sometimes the people you get surrounded with are not the best people, so therefore the environment of the class or group is not the best and that's why you can't do your best at school academically talking Also my math teacher bullied me MY MATH TEACHER!!! Like mate you're and adult WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BULLY A 16 YEAR OLD!!! I actually told my mom that I skipped his classes because I felt abused, and he told my mom a ton of bs about me obviously my mom didn't believe him......
