I went to schools in sweden. I and others were bullied for what we could not afford to wear. Sports and ski strips was one of the worst moments. We even ran out of school sometimes to avoid the horrible clothing moments. And in the mornings it took a lot of time to pick clothes. My parents could never afford me to choose what to wear and the wealthy kids in school always gained more popularity from other kids and even adults. Also in sweden different schools have different status. I wish we could have school uniforms in sweden and uniforms for the teachers. Some teachers even dress very inappropriate, dragning teens attention to wrong things.

@genmea3 жыл бұрын
@@Jo_Wardy hmm in another comment section you mentioned you went to a private school did you not. And if you can afford to wear Converse, Adidas, Nike or Docs you are rich and privileged no one will bully you. There are children who cannot afford those brands, or any brand for that matter and can only buy the cheapest shoes available in Asda that cost £10 it's those kids that get bullied. School uniforms take away that clear distinction in status because you all have to wear black shoes with no embellishments. Wheter you spend £10 or £100 on a pair of black shoes, it's a pair of black shoes, it won't stand out like a sore thumb.

I hated wearing uniform at the time (mostly bc I had to iron it every single week and it took forever, and bc it wasn't the most attractive/comfortable) but looking back I'm glad it was that way. Also, once we get to sixth form we were allowed to wear whatever we wanted, so we still got a chance to 'express' ourselves, if that makes sense. I wanted to feel comfy in the things I chose to ware. I never got bullied for it, I figured that after 4 more years of this BS I would never see the majority of the people I graduated with anyway. People who wear a uniform express themselves in every other way that isn’t what clothes are on their back! For example the backpack you have, and how you decorate it with pins if you choose so, stuff in your hair, decorating your planner. Also in all high schools that I have friends at, you need to bring your own trainers for PE, so there’s one way you can express yourself *cough *cough I mean flaunt your family’s wealth with the latest designer trainers

Personally, I feel it was bad enough how the girls with designer school trousers and rucksacks and did their hair and makeup (money) looked down on the frumpy kids with the cheap trousers and practical rucksacks - and that was *within* the parameters of the uniform. At least we were actually wearing the same outfit, at the end of the day. I would have hated it if there was more difference between us because they were wearing fashionable designer outfits. They would have been unbearable and those people weren't even that bad at my second school (it would have been horrendous at my first) but the social divide would have been. Honestly the pressure to wear different clothes every day in itself would have been tiring before even getting to coordinating an outfit. As for shorts, you can wear cut of ‘slacks’... very trendy.. lol I’m a infant School teacher, my class are 6-7 years old. They all wear uniform, they wear white polo shirts, grey trousers/skirts or dresses and a blue jumper/cardigan. Their jumper/cardigan has the schools logo on it. I think wearing the logo gives them a sense of belonging in the school community. They are all very proud of their school. I teach in a very deprived area, qualifying parents get assistance to buy their children’s school uniform (around 34% of parents in my school). My own children love to wear their school uniform and are always so proud! From what I've heard, that's often just america in general - it's not that uncommon to go buy groceries etc in sweatpants, whereas where I live (and in most other european countries), people dress up a little - wearing at least jeans or regular pants. Same goes with school - we don't have school uniforms, but are buying "nicer clothes" for it, because you're supposed to dress appropriately for it is an official institution. But then again, you can kinda wear whatever you want - school doesn't dictate what is and isn't okay, it's you or your parents who decide.

The kids who had fewer clothes were noticeable in primary school, as were the rich kids. This 'classism' disappeared, too. Most schools have a uniform which can be picked up very cheaply, from a supermarket. Uniforms get you ready, psychologically, to work; they're cheap; no-one is judging you, for what you're wearing and they cause less friction between kids and parents.

The PE kit used to just be a blue polo and blue shorts now it’s special and only can be bought from an expensive uniform shop. My secondary school is private but the uniform is so expensive. Only from one shop and over £100 for just the blazer. It’s comfortable though. Pro-uniform though. It makes my life easier as I can just have a few shirts, a blazer and a skirt and 3 t-shirts, a few trousers and that be my wardrobe whereas if I had to wear non-uniform I would be so lost about what to wear.

My fourth brother looked like an ink-spotted rag-bag! Not that he cared one jot, bless him. So, I got new blazers (I'm the youngest). Only my oldest brother and I ever got anything new. @samanthat5756 жыл бұрын
Kelli up here in Scotland it’s more of an issue in the winter when it’s too cold to just wear your blazer but the blazer is too chunky to fit in your bag with all your shit or to be able to put a coat on top of. Or if you can fit a coat on top, by the time you’ve walked to school you are sweaty and feel gross af. It’s a struggle.

Kelli oh god the rain! You’re especially screwed when the rain is paired with a strong wind that your umbrella is not able to withstand. But I would say school uniforms are way better, less hassle 😊 5 shirts and 2 skirts and we're good to go for the girls
@susiedowsett48136 жыл бұрын
In regards to the cost argument, I've attended 6 uniform-having schools (all in England, 5 different cities) and the majority (if not all) have had some sort of scheme by which uniforms that no longer fit can be donated somewhere and sold cheaply or given to families that struggle with paying for uniform from the shops. I think this is fairly standard and must make uniform cheaper than non-uniform.
@SamanthaNeersoo6 жыл бұрын
i like that idea, unfortunately my school doesn't have that system i don't know how people in situations where they can't afford the uniform get their uniforms, it is possible that the school helps the funding of them as they are required as i know that some people in my school are given free lunches and don't have to pay for school trips depending on their circumstances
@susiedowsett48136 жыл бұрын
Samantha Neersoo I believe free school lunches are government or council based here but school trips are probably done by schools themselves which is good. If schools are going to be super strict on uniform I think they should also provide a similar system but I've seen plenty of parents organise their own hand-me-downs too. Don't know if that would work in schools without school based systems? Or if a ptfa type group could do one?

I never had to wear a school uniform. I never felt that there were rich kids or poor kids, much less that you could tell by how people dress. I think it's more of a personality thing. People who care will dress nicer. Like where I am in life right now, I'm not rich by any means, but people almost always comment on how nice and put together I look. It's just taste and a desire to put effort into appearance. I'm not pro or con either way. As long as whatever code is enforced justly I don't care.
@ameliam45156 жыл бұрын
Juce yes that’s totally true in my case!!!! Like I personally love fashion so I get joy of picking out my outfits and it makes me happy. It never stresses me out. And a ton of kids at my school just wear sweatpants. But no one gives a shit what you wear anymore. It’s very nice. By wearing nicer clothes is in no ways showing differences of class. I go to a non-uniform, coed private school, and we all have to pay to get in to the school. So clearly we are all on some sort of equal level of class. Anyways, besides the point, like you said, wanting to wear “nicer” clothes is a personal choice. Wearing anything is a personal choice. Has nothing to do with the money your family has or wanting to seem cool, it’s just how you express yourself! (Sorry this is long in very passionate about dress codes and such)
@leexbea39596 жыл бұрын
What if someone wasn't able to afford to put in 'effort' into the way they looked? By that I mean, having very few clothes and having them be of not the best quality or unfashionable. School is very superficial, and if you don't have anything to 'express yourself' with then wouldn't that open you up to even more bullying?
@2wesx6 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree, when I was in 6th grade and up there was always judgement about your clothing. If you had dirty clothes or wore the same 7 outfits you were always looked at as "the poor kid". There was so much drama over name brands, and "omg do you see what she's wearing" happened so much. I wish we could have had at least some sort of uniform. Like kakis and a polo shirt. No uniforms were hell in middle school drama.

@anonymous-iu4th Жыл бұрын
@@normal7877 well we can't exactly just pull kids out of education every time they do something nasty can we? So how would we do that?
@yearningjon6 жыл бұрын
I don't get the argument that uniforms prevent bullying because whenever we had to wear uniform you'd be bullied because they could accuse you of wearing the same shirt unwashed for a week and everyone would believe them and if you didnt tie your tie a certain way or have the newest bag or haircut or makeup you'd have the same issue but also you would be more likely to get picked on for aspects of yourself you can't change like your nose which creates self-esteem issues that last much longer than if you're picked on for your clothes because you can change your clothes but you can't change your face. School uniforms are also very gendered the majority of the time so girls will have to wear skirts, etc. which creates problems for trans students. As soon as I moved to a school with no uniform and a dress code that was never actually enforced there was absolutely no bullying whatsoever and everyone was generally much happier and less stressed. Even when the schools with uniform had mufti days and everyone came in in their own clothes the bullying would suddenly disappear for the day. We also had clip-on ties so never actually learned how to tie a tie either.

Imagine having to wear a kilt-like skirt everyday. It’s shit, oversized and uncomfortable. Plus every part of my uniform is blue. I look like a blueberry going to school. I hate my uniform. Mine specifically is far too hot for summer and far too cold for winter. I’m not saying that uniforms as a whole are bad, just that schools should acknowledge that their uniform (especially is it is designed so that it HAS to be bought through a school vendor) needs to be comfortable and practical for the kids to wear. I also think that my school focuses way too heavily on how we wear our uniform to the point where some kids are being pulled out of class because their jumper is tucked in or their skirt is rolled up. They need to remember what takes priority.
@sophiebobb40106 жыл бұрын
DoNOTannoyKarina I do agree with most of what you're saying. The fact that (in my personal opinion) school uniforms have so many benefits does not mean that schools should get away with making them terrible. Possibly the ideal school uniform would be decided upon after conference with the student body, and would incorporate considerations of style and of practicality, with the intention that students *do* feel good wearing their school uniform, as indeed they should.
