Damian Roberti, CEO and founder of Marketing Food Online, has been in the food industry for about 30 plus years. He explains how you can start an e-commerce food business selling coffee and making $10,000 a month in sales. And he shows you the way that you can do that through Amazon, eBay, and Etsy, and tapping into your own website. Before you take any of the advice I'm gonna give you on how to sell coffee, you need to make sure you're a legitimate business. What I mean by that is that making sure that you're in a inspected, licensed, food business insurance, you have all the business licenses from the city and county you're operating in, registered business with the state and an EIN number for your tax purposes with the IRS.
There are three different ways that you could actually sell coffee and actually package it. In order for this to work, you need to sell $30, it needs to be your average sale price per transaction on your own website or on Amazon, on eBay or Etsy. That is on average, it's around $34, $34 is the average price point for products that are sold on most coffee websites. Now, with that being said, there are going to be fees. So you want to make sure that you are bringing in around $30 for yourself after those fees, okay?
I recommend you be on as many websites as humanly possible because that's what we do. Having your coffee online in front of these different avenues and these different customers on these different platforms is only going to increase your odds of selling only 11 packages a day at $30 a pop. The more variety you give your customer, the better off your business is to succeed and to reach that $30 transaction price point. When you bundle several different types of coffee or even the same coffee with several different bags, 6 units, 12 units, and so on, what you do is you increase that transaction, you make that per transaction cost go up. So you have an opportunity to create a bundle where the customer is also seeing the value in buying multiple bags or multiple coffees, you create a higher price point.
And if you played it right, you can actually create bundles subscriptions where you've got three bags of your coffee going to a customer every single month. But let's just say it's around 40 to $50 for that one transaction. Again, you're already ahead of the game in that goal of getting $10,000 a month. Coupons, sales, and discounts are tremendous ways to drive even more sales, okay? You can create a coffee subscription business on Cratejoy that's reoccurring.
Use hashtags like #coffee, #Starbucks, #espresso. All of these different words with hashtags in front of them on social media platforms will only give your product more and more exposure. At the end of the year, you're doing over 120, $130,000 a year in coffee. If you are looking to create your own food truck, start a home-based food business under the cottage food law, franchise a food operation or start a packaged food business, sell on Amazon. It's not something that's gonna happen overnight and it takes a lot of work, but once you get it up and running, scaling it is much easier.

I plan on starting a tea business and I want my own blends. Should I have the private label company make the blend or only provide the tea and i outsource the other ingredients for the blend from somewhere else. My main issue is wanting to keep my blend something that companies don't promote on their own site as a blend but more importantly, my concern is me doing it myself due to regulations. If I am not allowed to do it at home, where can I mix the ingredients and put into packaging myself? Edit: I found the answer as to making it at home. I guess there are certain food/drink items that you can make at home and tea falls in that category. Coffee too for those looking to roast their own beans. It does depend on the state, but it seems like these two typically are allowed in most states.

hello this will depend on your states cottage food law you have to make sure roasted coffee beans are allowed, next shipping food from home unless you have a separate kitchen that is licensed and inspected by the state (department of agg) you cant ship over state lines this is not allowed. Using a drop shipping company online they would ship for you, and you dont touch any coffee.

I'm not roasting or unpacking the pre-package coffee beans, so does the Agg still need to inspect a separate kitchen? Sorry I have to disagree, coffee is not a good product for most to sell online. I started roasting coffee in 1997. Now retired I use to do private label roasting for hundreds of clients. Most never sold more than twenty pounds a month. There are over 10K web sites selling coffee online. Most dream about selling $300 a day. To succeed at selling coffee online you need to be a master brander like Black Rifle and Death wish coffee.. If you are good at branding, coffee can be a good product as it is a cottage industry product you can make at home with a small coffee roaster with a start up cost of a few thousand dollars or buy wholesale and repackage. Like you said it takes time and it is not easy.

Enduro Coffee Roasters will do white labeling (private label). You can design your own bag, make a custom blend, then order in bulk at a reduced wholesale price then sell them retail under your brand. For a fee, they will package it all up for you in individual packaging, with your label, and send your way.
