Alanis dated Dave Coulier, who played Joey Gladstone on Full House not Uncle Jesse. She was 18 and he was 33 when they dated. Alanis was a teen pop star in Canada before growing up and eventually releasing Jagged Little Pill. The bit on How I Met Your Mother with Robin's song "Let's All Go To The Mall" was a take-off on that. Other Alanis Morissette songs to try: "Uninvited"; "Hand in My Pocket"; "Head Over Feet". And seriously, do "Rhythm Nation".

Personal observation... The two versions of Alanis in the back seat have always reminded me visually of Siobhan Fahey during her time in Shakespears Sister, specifically as the angel of death in 'Stay' and her character in the music video for 'I Don't Care.' Anyone else ever think that or see the similarity? For what its worth... Those are two amazing songs by two very talented ladies that you both might enjoy.

NO! That song was about Dave Coulier, he was uncle JOEY not Jessie. The one who did the Bulwinkle horns. Also, she was pretty eccentric. Crazy's too harsh of a word but she was definitely different when she started. Like most young celebrities she grew out of it. Also there's a song I heard a lot growing up that I always thought was Alanis Morissette and it wasn't. It was that song 'bitch' by Meredith Brooks which you guys should listen to if you haven't yet.

I loved her "Jagged Little Pill" album, although my first wife despised the whole "grunge" thing, and 90s music in general. What I can I say.... she was a dedicated "metal head", and those "Glam/Hair Metal Bands" were her real preference. But it's all good. If I can throw any suggestions at you, it would be "Doro Pesch" from the 80s band "Warlock" (and into her solo career)... she does some great covers of iconic songs, as well as her own original music. White Wedding is a great cover she did, but "Bad Blood" is one of her own iconic songs that won MTV-Europe's "Best anti-racism song" award in (I believe) 1994. One thing to know about her, is that some of her songs are in her native German, but most are in English. I've met her numerous times, and to show my love for her music, I have her autograph tattooed on my left arm, below a tattoo of one of her song titles that my first wife always called me. Her "Rare Diamond".

Although she seemed to be the queen at the time, in mid grunge, there was a wave of female singer songwriters, Alanis, Jewel, Sheryl Crow, Mazzy Starr, the Cranberries all very powerful, popular and the alternative at the time to the Seattle sound or grunge. This is just before the boy bands, and auto tune cancelled out some great music in the late 90s. Suddenly, everyone was a Brittany or Christina copy and music leaned into American Idolish type stuff.

Alanis said she didn’t consider this a serious contender for her album. It was something she came up with as a joke and little by little, she was inadvertently fleshing it out as a warm up when her producer noticed it was taking shape to be a hit. When he first broached the topic to her, she had trouble taking it seriously. It went on to smash everything in its path as a single. You could be a metalhead or diehard hip hop fan. Either way, you caught yourself singing this song every time it came on in 1996 to present day.

The early to mid 90's was the grunge rock era... music was stripped down to bare instruments and less high-end 80's production. The image of the artists had also been stripped down - bands from the 80's had big hair, makeup, flashy outfits... 90's grunge/ alternative bands dressed casually, refused to wear makeup and cut their hair short (sometimes appeared bald!) ... Nirvana and Pearl Jam had changed the scene 180 degrees... It wasn't hip in the 90's to be glam or glossy w/ a polished image. When Alanis Morissette debuted in Canada, she was a pop princess like Britney Spears... but she said that she hated being a 'product' of the music industry. Years later, she claimed that she was sexually abused during that time when she was only 15... She was around 20 when she left the teen pop industry and sought to write her own songs and signed w/ Maverick records and worked w/ producer Glen Ballard on 'Jagged little pill'... and she poured her angst and anguish into that record. It made perfect sense for her to be that stripped-down artist in 1995 when 'Jagged little pill was released... it was a perfect pop record for the 90's grunge era and sold well over 16x platinum in the US after charting at #1... and became a hit record worldwide. When she did her next album 'Supposed former infatuation junkie' in 1998, she actually appeared nude in the music video for 'Thank you' - the first single. The 90's had a lot of artists that did not appear w/ the glossy and glam music industry standards... Even rap music stepped into 'gangsta rap' territory where u had to be dark and dangerous - they couldn't be goofy or humorous like the 80's rap stars... That eventually changed as the 'alternative music' scene dissipated by 1997 and artists like Mariah Carey, Veruca Salt, Usher, Backstreet Boys... embraced the glossy image again and music was just a mixed bag by 1999 in all genres...
