I read a book like this titled The Side Effects of You by Anna Black. It featured 3 friends, if memory serves right, and one of them had herpes. She thought it was very important to be upfront about it and disclose this to her dates early on. There are herpes communities. That was the only good thing about the book, the rest of it was trash and most book club didn't finish it.

I was watching a British documentary, and one of the nurses said in today's society we have more sympathy for people living with HIV than we do for people with herpes. He also said people with genital H are more suicidal but you never hear that from people with oral H (cold sores). Anytime I see these posts, I always substitute the H word with HIV and wonder how different my reaction would be to the post.
@GSutton5 ай бұрын
That's why they don't advise testing for it unless someone has a breakout - the diagnosis can cause a breakdown. I'm glad she's able to move past the initial pain & shame, but now everyone who knows her also knows her boyfriend has been exposed, and he may not have been as comfortable sharing that information with the world.
@BearingMySeoul5 ай бұрын
Did they say WHY on earth someone with HSV would be more suicidal than someone with HIV? Do the people with HIV think they're going to die anyways? It's not the 1950s or whenever someone decided that people shouldn't be informed about a transmittable disease existing in their bodies. Medical care needs to catch up.

@autumnsky30323 ай бұрын
There's an agenda to break the stigma associated with herpes, and those who have it. It's been said that herpes is not included in most standard STD testing because more people have it than realized, many of whom have no clue because they've never had a symptom. While working toward reducing shame isn't a bad thing, I can definitely imagine sharing this randomly at lunch with classmates made for an awkward hour.

Lawrence Fishburn once said in a podcast that people are more interested in self-disclosure and less in self reflection. I’m paraphrasing, but it’s been a point that remains true about social media and internet years later. 😩

I actually understand this post. One of my besties has it. In the US 1 in 6 people have it. When you’re dating it’s really difficult because many people want to be honest but it’s hard to find people who are comfortable with it. I just get the other side of the perspective because she chooses to be honest when dating and a lot of people (which is understandable) are not comfortable with it. And many of those people actually probably already have it and have never gotten tested 🤷🏾♀️.

They say it’s good for the soul.
@ablacksquare5 ай бұрын
It IS possible to tell too much but in this case I don’t think so. The statistics are in her favor as something like 180 million people live with a form of this disease. Sometimes people need to normalize thing to remove shame but also to create opportunities for information sharing that would be helpful in reducing the exposure. Sharing this way also positions her to build community. But yeah SSN addresses, cell phone numbers are sharing too much. If you have the privilege of community, partnerships, access to healthcare, the complexion that is protected, than an announcement is minor.

To be honest, there may be somebody who needs to hear this. I had someone really close to me be diagnosed with HIV. Even though the medications are so much better, we’ve been struggling with the mental battle. When Billy Porter came out and talked about his diagnosis, it helped me understand so much more. Doctor’s and therapists can help but sometimes, we all need to hear the voice of someone who is battling too. Plus, there are medications that help people with herpes live normal lives too. I get that it’s a lot of info, but after dealing with the suicide risks and all the stress, I’d take all the support I can get. Love you EJ, thanks for posting ❤

@heidiely32435 ай бұрын
Absolutely. No shame. No judgement. But not everyone wants to come up on certain things. Give us a content warning so we can decide for ourselves. I follow some people that I don't watch all their content because they talk about stuff I don't want to hear. They've said they do this because they know it makes money and they don't normally talk like that in real life. They know what they're doing. I just think, for me, would I want someone I know seeing me talk like that. And I don't talk like that on or off the Internet.

I don’t know I just don’t be caring that deep lol but I will only speak on things I’m comfortable with sharing which still might be too much at times. Long as I’m the one telling my story I don’t care & I don’t mind answering any questions you might have after story time.
