I don't think a lot of people understand the ending of "Are you Happy now?" The whole time Squidward wasn't feeling anything at all at the time. What SpongeBob did made him feel Anger and thus the Anger made Squidward Feel Alive in the process.
@AlkisenSuper4 ай бұрын
I understood the ending. I didn't think it was good though. Something gentler would've been more fitting, especially considering SpongeBob only tried to help him throughout.
@SarcasticHoboАй бұрын
@AlkisenSuper I think the ending fits modern season squidward. Modern show squidward fills the void of wasted potential with a massive victim complex he can no longer stray because he gets the most attention and sympathy from not being ok. Which is why he doesn't want help from SpongeBob to get better in the end. The episode felt like a metaphor to the SpongeBob cycle the first time I watch it.
@suspiciousstar75476 ай бұрын
Whether or not this might be true, I totally understand on why he would be depressed. He works at a fast-food place where his boss sees him as cheap labor and his co-worker wants to avoid him all the time (sometimes it's justified though). He constantly gets mocked and humilated by the citizens in his town, who can be worse than Squidward imo. Heck, there's an episode where his OWN FRIENDS abandon him to celebrate a holiday about hating him so much.

You're right SpongeBob gets depressed, there is no way SpongeBob being depressed. These two are different. He's full of life and energy. He just feels his emotions really deeply. But in general he's happy and optimistic character and I like that he gets frustrated with himself and sad or angry and jealous sometimes because that way he seems more humane. Even happy and optimistic people can feel sadness in some periods in their lives. Also i remember the episode "SpongeBob you're fired" where he actually feels really depressed. If someone has to be depressed in SpongeBob is probably Squidward (for sure) and maybe Plankton. Great job and video by the way.

The fact that: 1) he sees a fast food place as the Pinnacle of culinary achievement (see his establishing pilot, Help Wanted) 2) he has a habit of obsessing over something the instant he thinks of it 3) his constantly being portrayed as optimistic in the face of failure outside of the pickles incident and... 4) his regularly shown love pf jellyfish All tell me he's more hyperfixated than depressed. He even caves to peer pressure on occasion when it comes to being cool, outside of the Pretty Patties incident (where he proves Krabs and Squidward wrong about the concept, but does gove ot over to Krabs a day before everyone finds out it dyes THEM too). Given that he's still referred to as a kid in the first SpongeBob movie (and ends up owning it at the end), this doesn't seem too out of place to me. He's probably 18 or 19 at the oldest (physically speaking) when the series takes place. Course, it's also possible he may just be on the extreme end of the autism spectrum, much like my older brother. Edit: fixed typo

I believe SpongeBob at least in the movie (supposed ending of the series before Nick wanted more) Is about 31-35 years old. He's probably "college age" at the start of the series. Basically he's a adult with a child-like mind, either seeing the wonder and comfort in it, or it's just how he thinks... or really just both ways I feel. He could be on the spectrum.

I kinda wish you mentioned the Whobob Whatpants episode. I honestly hated that episode, because of how it starts. He starts out happy and cheerful, but then, out of nowhere, everybody turns on him for destroying things (not intentionally). Gary, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, even Sandy. They all called him Idiot Boy. (Squidward did too, but that wouldn't surprise anyone) He took it to heart and it caused him to run away. I'm not sure if you can link that to depression or not.

This episode put me in SpongeBob's shoes. It made me feel like I was at home and spending time with my parents. They react in the same way as Sandy, Gary and Mr. Krabs in this episode. I don't think this episode is necessarily bad, but it is a representation of how toxic people take you to rock bottom and end up making you abandon your old life and start a new one. Sometimes starting a new life means ending the old one. If you know what i mean.

not a new observation by any means something i noticed is that in most examples spongebob's behavior can easily be explained by autism. his difficulty with change, especially with his interests or routine, his naïveté and seeming lack of ability to "read the room", even OCD-like compulsions are fairly common within those on the spectrum. i doubt he was written with neurodivergence in mind but as a young undiagnosed kiddo i found myself relating to him quite a bit, maybe even moreso now as i get older. tbh most of the characters have very strong personalities and defined interests that could be attributed to neurodivergence; children's cartoons (even as great and well-written as spongebob) aren't usually known for their deep and complex characters. spongebob stands out to me as the most likely to be labelled canonically on the spectrum, and is the most realistic feeling representation of the show. and patchy. patchy is definitely autistic.
@Yipper646 ай бұрын
3:12 I know a lot of mental issues kind of overlap but I think a possible diagnosis could also be autism. I know I kind of get like this when someone says something about my special interest that kind of seems to undermine my authority on the subject, sort of thing. You know? Like if I was just as into being a frycook as spongebob is and I heard "you got the pickles wrong" even when I *know* for a fact I didnt... i'd be fairly messed up about it too.

I would not be surprised at all to find out Spongebob is neurodivergent. As a person with adhd and possible ocd, I relate to most of his symptoms and it's surprising how much a simple kid's show not meant to be taken seriously or have long storylines can portray mental disorders and illness. I personally think he has adhd because of his hyperfixiations and cravings for stimulation.

As someone who has depression (not gatekeeping it, and if anyone out there with depression has a different experience than mine, that's ok. I'm merely speaking from my own perspective) it's so hard to say because the show is episodic. But even with the examples shown I don't think he has it. He's just someone who expresses his emotions very strongly, whether they're sad or happy. Many of those moments I think even confident and/or mentally healthy people would feel distraught by (losing a pet, being humiliated by someone, teased etc.) I'd say his condition is more closely tied to autism than anything, a disorder that is commonly diagnosed alongside depression and ADHD (I have ASD but not ADHD) Interesting video! I like that you didn't make your answer conclusive. It's important when the characters concerned are fictional. EDIT: As many people have pointed out, Squidward is way more likely to suffer from major depressive disorder. He strongly exhibits all of the most common signs (feeling tired, outbursts of anger, agitation etc.), but just like real life, it's not all or nothing. There are periods when it manifests more and when it manifests less, which is why Squidward can be shown engaging in hobbies and interests. (This inconsistency is probably why we Millenials relate so hard to his ennui lol)

about SpongeBob's driving issues: For a lot of trauma victims there's something called skill regression. It's literally losing the ability to perform basic skills. For some people it can be talking, but for others it could be driving. When SpongeBob is doing the best at driving it's either when there's some sort of comforting authority figure, or by being chased to death lol. Some trauma victims deal with near constant skill-regression to the point where their default is not being able to perform said skill. That being said, warmth from an authority figure can often be processed as enough love and kindness to a trauma victim that it temporarily makes them feel safe enough to re-progress said skills

SpongeBob perplexes me. He's hated by everyone, when all he ever does is try. But he seems not to understand certain social cues. In a vacuum, you might say this is a sign of some form of mental deficiency, or developmental problem. But this to me seems a lot more like a PTSD response, and depression. If you couple this with his unintentional, and yet all too real sociopathic tendencies (remember the whirlybird disaster), and the fact that, despite Squidward's unbelievable annoyance with him, he sticks around and even sticks up for him, helps him and taks care of him when he needs it, and this would explain SpongeBob's undying loyalty in his 'friendship' towards him, in spite of the seeming lack of reciprocation, it seems to me that there is a lot more to SpongeBob's behavior, and the dynamic between him and his friends then is immediately evident in the show.

@@runier2352they all love spongebob until they don’t tbh. Remember when spongebob’s grandma gave him a kiss on the forehead? Or when squidward pulled a prank on him? They’re so much worse then squidward cause most of the time squidward is justified

another honorable mention is the episode where spongebob can't sleep

sometimes moments where Spongebob cries over small things like accidentally ripping his shirt or other small things just on the drop of a hat, even if it's exaggerated, it's kind of a mood. All it takes is one small thing to bring you crashing down, even if it's not for long.

Imagen playing the main character with no meaningful growth for twenty years, who wouldn't be depressed if that was there life.

I definitely think SpongeBob has adhd or/ and is autistic. A common trait seen in autism is the fear of change to things in your life or routine, social anxiety and social disconnection (lack of understanding social situations and difficulty in reading the room/ others emotions) this is obviously a trait he has as he has been manipulated countless times by the same people, you can also see this disconnection whenever he interacts with Squidward. He also has a tendency to stim (traits common with adhd and autism), but i won't count that as it's a cartoon and cartoon characters tend to be very animated. ADHD can also explain his sudden shift in moods (i personally don't think it would be a bipolar disorder as they are more complex than having mood swings). Fyi, this is all coming from someone who's autistic and has adhd, im not a professional psychologist, but i am quite the psychology nerd.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was depressed, he’s been going on for years and his creators won’t just give up and give my guy a happy ending.

7:06 When Squidward asks Patrick about SpongeBob, Patrick says "He's impressed", the joke being that Patrick misheard "depressed". It's an adult joke because little kids don't know about depression.
