I agree with Zaven that music is now the marketing. I think artists main source of income is from touring and live shows, and streaming helps sell tickets. I think it’s important to note that music used to be harder (more expensive) to make, compared to today. Now practically anyone can make their own music. So it’s sort of live by the sword-die by the sword. Things have gotten easier and harder at the same time. Selling physical units involves more cost by the artist too so in a lot of ways I think streaming is just the newest innovation in the constant struggle of the artist. Great conversation!

Excellent convo! Another topic I would've loved to see them discuss is how these platforms globalise music and, therefore, dilute different styles of music. I'm of the (not very new) belief that we, as the consumers, need to decentralise our sources of music to help create more regional flavours and better support the artists that actually live in your area. Same as the food industry: you should grow and eat the foods that grow natively in your area. If you want a fresh orange or avocado, go somewhere where they grow that food. This is not an absolute, but a direction I think we should be moving within the wider music community.

Y’all nailed a lot of good talking points. And yes I bought your Pillar music book from IG and discovered you just because I’m a pan player and wanted to support others. It’s all really deep and was designed to be hard to navigate as an artist. Good discussion man!

My initiation into Scales' music was catching them on tour with Animals as Leaders. It is quite likely, with the sheer quantity of music out there, I may never had come across his, and his fellows, music despite being a Weather Report/Return to Forever kind of guy. Our fates intertwined. Excellent points abound in this hour, but Scales and I have a similar outlook on many things and share having 'eyes rolled at us' for having an opinion that strays from many others. Keeping it as simple as I can... I think anyone who gets in the music industry with the intent to 'make' money has already stepped into the ring on the wrong foot. That is coming from a guy who recorded various bands on a tape deck down a hallway with a cotton ball over the 'mic' played back and listened to and then put up on a chair six more inches away from the wall for someone to ring the doorbell and ruin the whole recording. Who has never used Spotify, Napster or torrented, and uses Bandcamp religiously and prefers to buy merch and go to shows. So, I am not the standard of consumer of music. I even ordered a few things from Mr. Scales and entourage and he saw to it personally, via text messaging, that I received what was ordered. The music scene is OVERLY saturated and so many 'true' musicians get drowned out by pure magnitude of 'music' available.

Great conversation. You guys are helping the community by forcing us all to think about the options, implications, and potential outcomes of the choices we make. And it is okay to make bad choices as long as we learn from them, teach others about the traps, etc... More content like this Jonathan! 🙏🙏

Awesome idea & keep going with these video ideas & conversations. Constructive critique: you might find better results speaking directly into the microphones rather than ambient placing. much love!

Thanks! I did that with those particular mics for a reason, but yes of course! That how that works :-) those mics in this setting without pop-filters would have been a way bigger issue....ya do the best you can in any given moment and push forward.

No mention of bandcamp so far, weird. It could be the solution.

Little Richard 'giving away Tutti Frutti' is ironically hilarious, given its meaning.
