Squidward has an odd type of narcissism. He loves himself, but he loves himself for his skills, which manifests into self-portraits. However, the rest of Bikini Bottom sees that as just plain ol' self-love, when all he really wants is validation that he's a good artist.
@314rft3 жыл бұрын
And interestingly, probably because this show has existed for about 22 years (yes), then all of the kids who grew up with it (like myself) were able to realize with age that Squidward really is way more deserving of recognition than he gets due to actually having legitimate skill, and that his cynicism is not just grouchiness but instead legitimate tiredness from everyone treating him like garbage, and thus value Squidward and his art *very* highly.

Meta moment; “It’s just a sad show, just an ego, as far as I know we were both pretending, I supposed so, but what do I know?” ~Dustin Bates Oh and he really needs to embrace the absurd and start increasing the diversity of his subjects rather than continuously drawing himself.
@jarektempleton21043 жыл бұрын
@@enasbitch6988 His art, to him, would probably become meaningless then. I think he just needs to do a bit of soul searching. Art for yourself is a fine but lonely passion. It only breaks your heart when you’re not given validation for it, because the motivation of the piece is to be your own good company; no one else values that and so he’s caught in a depressing loop where he’ll just keep making art pieces for his own stability instead of pushing towards something people of their minds will relate to. The fact that they don’t appreciate his art, already, only speaks volumes about what kind of art industry is run in Bikini Bottom.
@wasssssuppppppp3 жыл бұрын
Well but he’s also obsessed with his appearance and believes in his superiority generally. If people started to acknowledge his skill his egotism probably wouldn’t go away, because he doesn’t just want validation as a good artist, want validation for the skills he actually posseses, he wants the validation of his self-conception as a super artist and as an elite member of society.

In Season 2 Episode 26 "Squidville," Squidward moves to Tentacle Acres, a gated community of only other octopuses. Around five and a half minutes into the episode, he joins a clarinet trio (making it a quartet). He begins playing an accurate countermelody on his clarinet with no warm-ups, and then becomes the lead clarinetist the next day. Being that the other residents are just as snobbish and full of themselves as Squidward is, it speaks volumes to Squidward's skills as a musician that an established trio would accept his spontaneous arrival with no qualms, and then almost immediately elect him to the principal position.

An interesting aspect of Squidward that I’ve found is that he seems to be genuinely passionate about art and music. This is in direct contrast to his rival: Squilliam; who is very good at playing clarinet, but doesn’t care much about it at all and finds more happiness in the rich lifestyle and notoriety it bring him.
@BigRedAltoids2 жыл бұрын
Squidward also seems to desire that same end goal (though maybe he wants fame more than wealth). I think the only real difference is that Squilliam is either more skilled or better at marketing his talent. You'd be shocked how far you could go by simply being a good businessman and being willing to work with people with a lot of connections. That's how artists make it, and Squidward needs a lesson is business relations.

A very neutral yet brutally honest and straightforward video about the true nature of Squiward's art. I like it. I always asked myself why he was always treated in such a harsh and cruel way, when his arts always were really interesting and nice, and even inspired my 6 y.o. me(and even until 8) to try art even if i only had old school notebooks from kinder or elementary school and cheap poor-quality kid markers to make something nice out of it. I always felt like crying when seeing how cruel was the world with him, when he only wanted to be recognized as an artist, frustrated by life and a neighbour who seems to have TDAH+the worst personality ever. I loved sponge bob, but after being punched SO HARD as a kid for being like him("you are annoying", "be more quiet, your pitch voice is killing me", "can you please stop for one sec?? Ugh"), i TOTALLY UNDERSTAND why he would felt so bad about his life and why he's like that with Bob, since i get that most people could find him VERY annoying. He only wanted one thing, but couldn't make it, and i assume that, based on his failure record, this guy narcissism is only a coping mechanism to hide how insecure and sensitive he is about his work... (Bc, let's face it: Squidward felt annoyed at Bob for overcoming him, but if he was TRULLY so confident in himself, he would actually NOT be so easily affected by the fact that Spongebob actually did better without knowing "the fundamentals" of art.)

Another thing that I feel is worth pointing out, is that mood appears to be a driving factor in the quality of his work. For example in an early episode (The bubble stand one, I don't remember the name) he accidentally blows a really impressive bubble, and the praise he receives lifts his mood enough that he's able to briefly play his clarinet quite well. Then there's the Best Day Ever episode, where he has a full on concert set up (how he got there is questionable, but we'll let it slide), and while we never hear the performance, as soon as Spongebob sits down, the crowd starts cheering, which implies that unless they are all just being super polite, he must have actually done a pretty good job. So, he's definitely CAPABLE of creating good art, even canonically, it just depends on the situation.
@malrict59695 жыл бұрын
I feel compelled to add that Squidward was good at playing the clarinet in one episode: season one's "Bubble Stand". The notable thing about this brief period of good playing is that it happened at a time when Squidward had a positive attitude due to his success at figuring out how to blow a big bubble on his own. (Which, now that I look at it, was probably only to prove that he wouldn't be outdone by Spongebob in any sort of artistic way.) After everything goes wrong though, he goes back to the poor, off-key playing that we know him for. This seems to support the idea that it is his attitude about things that is limiting him. Let us also not forget the episode where he writes a symphony while sleep deprived that is both approved immediately by the person in charge of the event and is enjoyed by everyone in attendance. It is shown in a way that seems to want us to give the credit to Spongebob and Patrick for their "leading roles" in the work, but it was ultimately Squidward that make such odd inclusions work in the flow of the music. So Squidward is a good artist. It is just sad that nothing ever seems to go his way, nor is he ever appreciated.

I always find it interesting when animators depict artist, because you need a strong understanding to be an animator. From what I've seen Squidward has very strong art skills, but he fails at the most taboo element, making it a product. It goes like this: - If you want to make money or get people to care about your art work you need to make Art for others. - Squidward only makes art for himself & don't care about the interests of others, so he'll most likely never turn a profit from it. Keep in mind, doing art for only yourself is fine for fun & there is no shame in it, you'll just struggle to get people to care.
@coffintears58212 жыл бұрын
I think if you expressed an idea you like that anyone can find amusement in you wouldn't have a problem but squidward makes self portraits of himself instead of ideas. It's like fan art anyone can enjoy it eventhough it's something you find personally entertaining. But since it's not about you in particular anyone can be open to find enjoyment in it cause it's a open topic and not self indulgence. Nobody likes a person who's too obsessed with themselves. And makes everything about them. In order to gain an audience you need to try different ideas. Squidward makes the same things over and over again and wonders why people don't care about his art. I think you need to push your limitations as an artist in order to be groundbreaking.
@shada02 жыл бұрын
@@coffintears5821 I think we need to take this in a broad approach & not just focus on the character in order to understand what the arts behind the show are saying. When Mr. Crabs hires Squidward that's a basic commission & he fails hard from making it for himself rather than the client, he never gives any thought what anyone wants The self portraits may just be a way to tie it all together for none artist to understand something is wrong. The problem that I'm talking about is a general issue especially with new artists & self obsession isn't a problem like not considering your audience. He never shows self obsession in any other way & he hated being surrounded by clones of himself. He hates his life, & hates other people more. Just not being creative, that is a far easier character flaw to depict, green isn't a creative color & all. The Mr. Crabs statue shows a lot of creativity, & could have worked if given to others people not Mr. Crabs. There is also a huge market for reproduction art, most people want art without the art, the same thing sells a lot (Has to be the right same thing), sad to say groundbreaking fails a lot. The need for Invitation in art is a nuance topic & requires an hour long dissociation. Although to avoid further argument, I think it is important to note the fact this is so debatable means the creators either didn't effectively communicate the problem or wanted it to be broad & open for interpolation.

Here's my stupid take on the matter Squidward is seen as a bad artist, not because of his technical skills, but because of how he uses art. Everything he paints, sculpts, cuts, and draws depicts the same exact thing, Himself. To Squidward, art exists only to immortalize himself, like a social media account that is used to show every last thing a person does in a day for upvotes, likes, and re-tweets. To Squidward, art is nothing more than a mirror. Look at this sculpture of me, compliment me. Look at this topiary of me This painting of me Me Me Me Me Me In the talent show, what did he do? Expressive dance. He did something that can't be done well or poorly, the "talent" he put out there was "Me.". View me, view my body, the way it moves, how special it is. Edit: one last thing. Squidward made an "improvement" to SpongeBob's statue. And what was that improvement? His own nose. His improvement is to make it more like himself.

If anyone wants an unnecessary analysis of his clarinet playing from an actual clarinettist: 1. Looks like sometimes he maybe sticks too much of the mouthpiece in his mouth. 2. You are _NOT_ supposed to puff your cheeks up while you play, as a matter of fact, you do the exact opposite, you keep your mouth firm. Your cheeks may start to inflate a little as your mouth gets tired, so either Squidward really never learned what to do with his mouth or his embrasure wears out extremely quickly (or the animators just wanted him to look cartoony while playing) 3. Logically there's no conceivable way of Squidward actually being able to play an instrument that requires fingers to cover up holes and press certain buttons, but we'll chalk that up to cartoon logic. I listened to some clips of him playing in the old episodes and honestly? He doesn't sound that bad. He's a little flat and pushes the notes a little harder and louder than they should be. However, when he moves to Tentacle Acres we see him jump in with the trio and flawlessly blend in with what they're playing, we've seen him improv well on the spot with no sheet music. Those things all take knowledge of music theory and familiarity with various pieces as well as your own instrument. His skill level reminds me of myself a couple years into practice, like a well-studied high school band player. In the scenes where he's supposed to be playing badly, he's actually playing some of the higher notes in the instrument's register which are easier to squeak and mess up on and are naturally abrasive by virtue of being such high notes. Like honestly, go back and listen to his playing, as much as the characters wince it's not actually that bad.

I forgot what episode it was but I remember one where at the very ending Squidward is happy and starts playing his clarinet and it sounds really great, as apposed to the rest of the episode where he was struggling (? again I can't really recall what happened in the episode but I do remember he was doing poorly and then at the end he finally plays very well) so Squidward basically is a great artist in many ways, his dancing is not even bad, it's just interpretive which most people just don't like. Just like this video states, his mindset is the thing that gets in the way of his success, other than that, it's also probably because no one around him appreciates his style of art/music/dancing so even if he was expert at those things all the time, he'd still not be appreciated.

I feel sad for squidward seeing spongebob excel in art during S2 Ep 18 "Artist Unknown". Squidward lectures spongebob about art and from the looks of it, he's passionate about being an artist. Whereas spongebob, unintentionally shoved to squidward's face his skills on art and how he's good at something that squidward isn't (based on the episode). There's nothing more depressing than a person showing you they are far better at what you are passionate about than yourself at doing what you love.

Rayquaza Δ Yup, also Snowball effect and Suction Cup Symphony. Heck countless episodes end with him as happy as the rest of the cast like Grandma’s Kisses ( even tho he was a douche), Pressure, the ep where Barnacle Boy turns evil, etc

I feel like the sculpting episode highlights an important aspect of Squiadward that wasn't really explored here. He is cynical and egotistical, but its only when he lets go of this notion and acts purely by passion and to some extent looking out for someone else (Spongebob) he is truly able to achieve his goals.
