I have an anecdote about this. I've spent the last year or so in a chat room dedicated to a pretty niche hobby (computer science related). The room has around two million messages, so I downloaded all of them and used them to create a sort of chat bot. It wasn't anything complicated, it just took pre-existing messages and showed you a random reply to the closest message in the room to what you typed in. It was kind of fun to play around with, but since it only used exact pre-existing messages it would give you nonsense replies pretty often. But, if you stuck with it for a little while, you'd sometimes end up in a little "conversation" where the replies just happened to actually make sense with what you said, and the context leading up to it. Even with full knowledge of how it worked, and having just spend ten or twenty minutes in a totally senseless and directionless conversation, when those occasional realistic discussions occured (usually under a dozen messages long), they felt way more real than they should have. I found myself genuinely thanking "people" who replied to my questions with useful answers, or being a little angry when someone said something which, devoid of the context it was said in, came across as rude or sarcastic. Now, in the time since I had first interacted with the room, which was part of a much larger site, and when I became most active, quite a few of the site's (and chat room's) main users had left. One of these had taught me a significant amount about one of the topics the room discussed. I'd had no contact with him in years, during which time I'd realized how helpful he'd actually been. Well, I tried saying hi to him, and since there aren't many other things you generally reply to that with, the program responded to me with an instance of him saying hi (to someone else, many years ago). I was, as if it had really been the real person, excited and happy. It took me a second to realize what had happened, to take some time and remind myself it wasn't real. In a situation where a computer can simulate not only talking with real people, but seeing them and holding long, realistic conversations, I don't think our brains would have any chance. It's easy to feel bad about killing a cat in Minecraft, so a fully realistic simulation of a discussion with another human being would surely be able to have a large impact on them. If someone can be simulated who is constantly compassionate and empathetic to you, who has zero ulterior motive and exists only to listen to you and discuss what you want to talk about, I could see even the most distant or technology-wary of people becoming closely attached to the simulated person.

The mental state of wishing the fantasie to be real and the "depression" at it not beeing so might seem more common nowdays, but it is fairly old and already occured thousands of years ago. Just look for example at the story of Galatea. A greek myth where an artist is so dissatisfied with the realness of actual women, he asks the goddess Aphrodite to give life to his perfect sculpture.
@kierenllama35683 жыл бұрын
True but it's all about relativity/scale. There's just so much MORE now. Not only is our fantasies literally limitless both in extremity and possibilities. But even in exagerrated reality with plastic surgery, make up, filters etc. We're easier deluding ourselves with how immersive and prominent it is. Our whole environment (phone, society, social media) is engineered for these escapisms. Manga, anime, tv shows, video games, VR. Sex dolls, porn. Even the whole hiphop rappers/rich living the big life. We know it's "real" but it's impossibly out of reach for most of us, and yet we're obsessed with that fantasy life. We're all stuck with coping in these delusions/fantasies, which makes us resentful and unappreciative of normal life. Unable to enjoy our own life in peace and contentment. Which makes us feel hopeless and useless to even try, thus mental illness/addictions/escapisms etc. Everyone is plugged straight into copium (cope opium)

I think VRchat is a good example as having fiction and reality together. You have real people in VRchat interacting with each other while using fictional characters or objects as themselves. You won't have to go through weird and stressful social interactions like real life. Jumping off the section on "Post-Avatar Depression," I think the most depressing idea that I've taken away from this is that so many people believe that planet earth is a dull, boring place. I've climbed snowy mountains above the clouds, slept under glittering desert night skies, witnessed dazzling sunrises in the middle of nowhere and walked through a rainforest, marveling at the teeming life that resides there. The world is beautiful, and it will be destroyed by human activity before most people even realize that it exists. We don't need a Pandora, we have one right here, but I understand how that might be hard to fathom when you spend your whole life mired in a suburban hellscape.

"The Matrix" is basically the "1984" of modern dystopia fiction; oppressive AI causing us to be born into a simulated world of virtual gaslighting. Some characters try to fight it, but others feel completely helpless and would be more content to just not know. Cypher experienced depression at the idea of an unwinnable conflict and the impoverished suffering of the real world, much like how oppressive the world of "1984" feels to people who are aware that the world is somehow "wrong", but they are powerless to oppose it due to the absolute surveillance. Meanwhile, the people who completely go along with things are blissfully ignorant; content to live their lives as virtual automatons under the influence and ever-present observation of Big Brother. But I've always felt that "1984" was an unrealistic representation of how a controlling dystopia would come about. A far more believable, realistically possible outlook, is "Brave New World". In BNW, people aren't oppressed or coerced to the ways of that society... they desire it and would choose it over the alternative. People are constantly drugged into a state of euphoria as well as being kept perpetually "young and beautiful" right up to when they drop dead, even though these drugs shorten their lifespan. They would much rather live short lives of beauty, sexual liberation, bliss, and worrylessness. They taught their children not just to accept and embrace death, but to celebrate it as a perfect end to a perfect existence. And even for those who actively rejected such a society, they weren't even forced to stay and participate. There were other places provided where they could live happy, but undrugged, lives in what was basically a Caribbean resort, experience the life-defining struggle (to them, anyway) of a survival life, or just go live in the unincorporated population which didn't have advanced technology, but also lacked the "perfect life" philosophy of the society. No one was forced into it... they trapped themselves, willingly and by choice. Imagine if you could be hooked up to The Matrix not by force, but by choice. You'd be set up with IV nutrients (probably not recycled people, but next best thing; recycled waste), you'd have constant, automatic medical monitoring, and all stimulus would not only be fed directly to your brain in a hyper-realistic manner, but you also had _control_ over your simulation. You could go to a group chat with others like you, or live in a private, Minecraft-esque virtual world, interact with virtual personalities completely at your own discretion, and just have generally complete VR freedom, completely dissociated from your physical body which is basically kept in storage until it stops working. Or, go one step beyond and upload your consciousness into the system, completely leaving your body behind and existing as data, itself. And none of the plot-necessary issues that The Matrix had to fabricate like "people naturally reject a perfect world in favor of a life of suffering". There are absolutely, 100%, people who do not fundamentally base their existence and humanity on suffering and would be _thrilled_ at the prospect of living an unfettered virtual life at the expense of physical existence.

@dimitris58663 жыл бұрын
@@josephcalabrese6337 Its basically Greek. It would translate to " drawing " in English and in Greek its called σχεδιο. In this context the whole word translates to someone who has an attraction to cartoons.
@gulfgiggleanimations44724 жыл бұрын
Hot take, but everyone that finds cartoons attractive is also everyone that feels attraction. If you commissioned a masterfully realistic painting of someone you find attractive, you wouldn't feel weird about calling the painting hot, and if you slowly stylize that painting more and more, eventually you will reach a point where you probably won’t, and while this is pretty much just speculation on my part, I don’t think most people’s attraction would cease once it’s something you would start to call a cartoon. The things that we find attractive don’t cease through stylization. TL:DR a nice ass is still a nice ass if it’s only lineart
@aliveslice4 жыл бұрын
Love how you switch from face to ass. He is talking more about people who are particularly attracted to cartoons? Like one of the threads there says "how can real girls compete". He talks a great deal about how it's easy to be attracted to cartoons because they have no will of their own. It doesn't have to be sexual either. People love pets more than people because they're easy to please, babies and small children - easier to control and no opinions to clash, imaginary friends - accept and support you unconditionally. Tl;dr cartoons are attractive because they're designed to be so and have no agency i.e. can't reject you
@TempestKrimps4 жыл бұрын
anime can and is designed specifically to be attractive, the only teeny tiny problem is that you won't ever get the social satisfaction of actually being with the "character" you've been watching for so long, an endless loop of desire with no reward (unless you consider dedicating yourself to pixels on a screen a good enough reward, in which case i think i don't need to point out the problem here)
@sboinkthelegday38924 жыл бұрын
The reasoning is backwards. Divorce rate isn't 50% because people suddenly realized the cat ears were missing. Weeaboos are not only escaping into fantasy, but won't escape into a living fantasy that this culture has become. When people get married, they marry into an idea of their partner being not who they are, but "a type" like any given Hollywood actor. Instead of talking to your fiancee, you watch the Scarlett Johansson movie she "sees herself in". People have already filled their ideas from templates formed inside fiction, and then think reality has to fit those templates. Thinking that they nabbed the actual Scarlett Johansson type, if not as pretty but at least a real person. But the type itself is a fantasy, and reality comes knocking when it hits that you married a person you never knew, who only reminded you of a fictional public profile of a deceptively realistic doll. This is a sore topic for these people who actually escape reality and they will do anything to shift blame onto the complete opposite, people who will understand that reality doesn't match up to fiction, only fiction can reach up to reality if cat girls could become real. But while people are forcing living beings into the mold of their Hollywood "realism", they do untold harm, objectifying, and even warping of practical reality into an unsustainable mess. It's a system of trying to pull off the scam if only for a little while, if Hollywood actors can look heroic for the length of a movie, people poorer tha them have to juggle work while reaching the same standrad for 8 hours at work and be exhausted in the evening, while poorer still your only option is to become a paragon just to live through your 3 part-time jobs. Compared to that imageboard lamentations "2D is better" is just empty rheotric, just a joke spoken at the end of the universe already.
@aliveslice4 жыл бұрын
@Mr. Note Differences are nuanced, simply put just the possibility of conflict or rejection can be off-putting enough, which is part of the reason why one might lean to the artificial. More often than not you would prefer sufficient common ground. My point is that finding cartoons/drawings is normal and a lot of the times completely expected, yet it's not the mere attraction that is being discussed, but the potential detrimental effect of being completely overtaken by fantasy. I don't recommend using the word troll based solely on disagreement, without clear insults involved.

We are very into this idea of art or entertainment that is "too good" in the way SS described, but I often wonder if the future dystopia is something much more efficient. Like, what if there's no "world" we escape to, through our VR headsets and whatnot? What if rather than the perfect beach, or the perfect game, or the perfect waifu, we just plug ourselves into something that delivers a pure pleasure sensation in the brain, with no atmospherics or fictional world or interaction or anything? That's basically what drugs are, right? So digital drugs would presumably be similar in their lack of complexity.

To be fair, reality sucks, and that's why people seek escapism. That is ALSO why communists and feminazis are DESPERATE to invade and control any and all forms of entertainment, even if it burns to the ground from incompetence (see american comic book industry, multiple previously popular tv series, and mainstream media). As the Joker once said, "it's not about the money, it's about the message". Because of the excessive destruction of escapism and geek culture, the need for peace of mind and escapism becomes even greater. Destroying escapism is saying, "You can't escape, we control the narrative, we control you". It's all propaganda, and at the rate this is going, we will see anime and manga nosedive as well. This is why gatekeeping against the mentally insane is so important. Hell, why do you think localizations are such a controversy? It's because people with an agenda changes a medium to suit their agenda, changing characters, jokes, and even sexes, all for the narrative while proclaiming, "this is what is best for you, to hell with the original creator's intent".

I think that it's still quite complicated to make anime girls/boys real, yet I'm surprised some informations still got ignored: + Some animals don't necessarily breathe through their noses, like fish who breathe with their gills or frogs through their skin. Heck, some living beings don't even breathe. It could eventually be possible to find a way to improve the respiratory device of a prototype, either by completely changing it or by "just" fusing it with another one; + Either we can just skip the mouth part and make the prototype's mouth like ours, either slight improvements can be done so it looks simpler or such. An idea I'd however be skeptical about is finding a way for the mouth to have some extra motion freedom- so it could go sideways in case this is much of a requirement. I have difficulties seeing that one working; + As for the prototype's eyes, I get that size has an impact on the eye's mobility. Though, instead or putting large eyes on the prototype, what if they rather had a casual size with sort of natural "lens" to make the eyes look wider? Said "lens" could even be designed so light is properly redirected towards the eyes, without any sight issues; - There may be other things to take in account while "building" an anime girl/boy, like muscles and general body resistance if we aim for something as close to perfection as possible. (and yeah I did skip the cartoon part)

Now it ticks no longer for a year, but for our limited amount of time leading to our inevitable doom. Because time is already running out. We only have so much left before our clocks strike zero. "cartoons are just more honest" god damnit you hit the jackpot I am personally obsessed with honesty, and I require it when I am around people. Anime/ cartoons are ideal for me. They act more like people than people do, which is a really shitty outlook on people in real life. They are more honest, real people than the fucking masks and social nightmares we call people in real life. They act how they feel. They voice their opinions. They are willing to be honest. You just don't find that in real life. Not anymore. Anybody I talk to in real life I hold to those standards. Act like a fucking human with emotions and expression or get lost. I'm also not some shut-in weeb. I am rather popular at school, and am rather easy to talk to. “Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known.”- Nick Caraway

I feel like if technology gets to a point where plugging yourself into a digital world is near identical to the real world, governments would treat it on the same level as crack or heroin and criminalize its usage.
@Exilum2 жыл бұрын
That'd be assuming there is a legitimate danger to its population and/or economy. The thing is, unless production and distribution are entirely automatized and essentially free or there is an universal salary, that simulation wouldn't be free, and people would still need to work and make the economy turn to be able to get into these digital worlds. They'd also need space to live in, food to eat and water to drink. Realistically, the companies making the devices to connect would be legally required to verify the users' physical state and disconect them should they be in danger. It'd mean that this would be no different from how you currently live: you work to survive and have a good time outside of work.

THIS is what deltarune is actually about. I heard someone say that the Fountains are symbolic for the ability to create fiction. The point of fiction is to state something about the world we live in by way of exaggeration. However, when the attachment to fiction becomes too strong... THIS happens. The reason that autistic people are more vulnerable to this, I feel, is that the world as it is feels inherently wrong to them, to at least some degree. We feel like we don't fit in, that we can't socially interact, or at the very least can't as much as others. Fantasy offers an escape, somewhere where you will feel loved. This is why those who feel pain are more likely artists; because they need that escape more. Fiction is exaggeration, and exaggeration is honesty, and honesty is escape. At this point, these lies become more true than reality; we engineer a reality full of lies, and engineer fiction full of truth.
