Many many years ago, when I was in my early 20s a much older man said to me, "these guys run around trying to earn more than the next man, you need to understand that it isn't what you make that matters, it's what you have to spend to make it that's important." I've never forgotten that piece of wisdom because it's just as true now as it was then, maybe more so.

Kurt, I was a company driver for 35 years and I got criticized often about how and why I did things. I'll say to you what I said to them, "you do you and I'll do me".

All depends, I used to stay out 4 months at a time, course being single helped. To make money in those long periods required not eating in truck stops and only showering when you had free showers from fueling. I would take a 34 to reset my clock when I ran out of hours, then jump right back in push some more. Made sure I worked every holiday to give the married guys time to spend with their families. For the most part life was good on the road!

I run a 1993 international daycab. I only make 1200 a day (gross) but I'm home everyday and it works for my situation. I couldn't imagine being gone out on the road away from family but i tip my hat to those that can do it.

I have come to the conclusion like you that going further and longer doesn't equal more money. I stick to my bubble of around 1000 miles from home and I have found that I make just as much if not more than I did when I was out weeks at a time.... AND I'm home much MUCH more often. I have settled into my regional work and am very happy. We seem to have a lot in common. By the way... Iowa is in my regional bubble. Maybe one day we'll cross paths

Kurt I believe it all applys to the individual trucking, it's definitely harder on the body with stress. I remember running a cattle pot in the 80's through Missouri, Iowa, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee & Illinois the money was good but it caused alot of stress and problems. You're the boss you do what's best for you Bud.🇺🇸👍🇺🇸🙏

A LOT OF US OLDER GUYS ARE PROGRAMMED INTO LONGER TIME SPENT WORKING. NOT THE CASE ANY MORE DRIVERS HAVE TO CONSIDER THEIR FAMILIES THEIR ACTUAL TIME SPENT UNWINDING FROM THE ROAD, AND YOUR BOSS SHOULD UNDERSTAND THAT. TODAYS HOURS OF SERVICE IS A MESS PERIOD. YEARS AGO AND STILL TODAY WE WERE TOLD WHAT TO DO AND IF WE DID'NT DO IT WE WERE FIRED. MANY COMPANIES SAY ONE THING AND PRETTY SOON IT'S A DIFFERENT STORY AND IT DON'T TAKE LONG FOR THAT TO HAPPEN. MANY OF THESE COMPANY PEOPLE ARE PROFESSIONAL MANIPULATORS.. JUST ONE MANS OPINION.

O-H-I-O Porter greetings 🇺🇸 I’m up before the crack of dawn & listening to the birds singing. Being out 10 days is a long time to be out, for sure. I always enjoy some good home time every week. You don’t always make more $$ by being out longer or driving farther. You might even have to spend more time waiting for a load as well. Hmmm! My brother & I would like to get out, make the deliveries & then get back so that we didn’t have to spend a weekend waiting on a load. Trucking is a different kind of beast at times! You mean the air dryer that cost you more because of where it was at? If I’m remembering correctly! Well, either way, I hope it gets cleared up. Always good to ride along with ya! Make the trip & enjoy the ride! Blessings my friend!🥰🤩✌️

Kurt, I think somehow the "law of diminishing returns" comes into play in your situation. Yes, those 4 Topeka loads every week would be perfect. But we both know why you are not getting the loads like THAT these days. Be patient. The herd will be culled soon enough and you can get back to what you like. As I have said before, "boring" same old runs all the time means more time at the house.

I pulled in to the scales down on HWY 2 at Nebraska city and backed my truck and potassium belly trailer up on there ramp and started in the front and adjusted all 6 axels brakes and as I crawled out from under the back end and I looked up and an dot officer asked if he could help me and I said well you was closed and I hadn't adjusted my brakes in a long time so I took advantage of your ramp so that an old fat guy could crawl underneath his truck. All he was worried about is if I backed off the side of the ramp that the state wasn't liable for the damages. But he said he was happy that I was trying to keep the truck up in good shape .

I remain dismayed at the running working folks into the ground for somebody's profit. It's wrong on so many levels. Really treating folks decently is healthier always. Making good honest videos like this is appropriate and appreciated, sir. I'll watch and support. Please don't be silent when honesty is called for because everything you've saying makes sense. Back around when you probably were just a kid, I had a friend I would go on shorter trips with. He drove part time. Did all sorts of work. The truck had dog hairs from his usual buddy. I didn't mind that at all. We have to survive and also set boundaries. Same as back then. I worked in carpentry in Texas weather. A 98 pound woman. I loved learning to build. Not so much the having to fight for myself all too frequently. Ah well. It takes a village. Take care. Of you, your family, and thank you for serving the community of us regular humans.

I keep telling people this. I don't run much over 62mph. Me running faster would be equivalent to you running longer, since I'm local in a day cab. Yeah, I could run faster and pick up another load that day, but I'm going to piss it away to the government, the mechanic, the tire shop, and the fuel tank. Not to mention the extra stress of "gotta get there gotta get there." It's just not worth it.

Overtime is hard to come by these days and times. A lot of employers do not want to pay it. They will make other employee work short handed to avoid it. I have to say that the trucking industry is in a mess. The economy revolves around transportation, trucking here. It’s treated the worst of any industry out there. Big companies make the big profits off the backs of the truckers . How does big companies keep making record profits and the little has a hard time eating. Its the power they have and the use it on every contract and every load. This will keep happening. Do you think the big companies care about most of the little guys, he’ll they couldn’t care less. That’s why we are in the position we are in today. The government can’t control these big corporations and they screw everyone. I think in the next few years a big change is coming. Have a great and a safe day. Happy trails and happy motoring.
